The best Sunday walk all year is this coming Sunday. The Warbler Migration is upon us. The weather this week is not really cooperating with the birds. Hopefully, the weekend will be better.

Prospect Park has had lots of yellow so far this season. Some of the sightings included: Pine, Praire, Yellow-rumped, Yellow and Prothonotary warblers.

Meet us at the Boathouse at 8 am on Sunday, May 4. Bring your own binoculars. Neal will be leading the group.

Despite low expectations for migration activity and this heavy deluge today (absolutely dreadful weather esp working in it) that would impact migration, I decided to go forth leading tomorrow's walk.

Fog is predicted from 8 am to 10, (7 likely some rain) maybe a possibility for a thunderstorm at 10. The positive ? Southern wind. If you are game,then I see you at Grand Army Plaza 7:15 am

We'll hope for the best,maybe we might get a surprise.

I have to end the walk by 10:10 for work.

Tomorrow, May 1st, I am subbing in for Tom Stephenson.  Mother Nature right now doesn't hoot for birds ;so stay tuned, end of day , maybe by 330 PM, I will see if the walk is a go or not based on latest weather reports from this huge soaker system. I rarely cancel walks unless it requires Noah's Ark.

Yellow is the color

Yellow was a welcome cheery sight under gloomy skies and a biting cold wind. Besides some yellow flowers--Wild Oats-- that bloomed in the Ravine, also of the color yellow, some birds ,one of which is rare for Prospect.

A few reports came from birders that benefited today's Brooklyn Bird Club Tuesday walk led by Bobbi Manian , a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON perched high in a tree overlooking the Lullwater. On the north side of Terrace Bridge, the rare heron was seen by Shane Blodgett, followed by a report of likely the same bird earlier by Cathy Sogg, ( telling Klemens who texted me), and then Rob Bate's tweet. I finally got down there on my lunch break, missing the bird until Rob showed me the heron.

But as I was looking for the heron, I did see a beautiful warbler, very bright and offering cheer on this drab day,a male YELLOW WARBLER. It appeared by the bald cypress trail adjacent to the pink beach along Breeze Hill, before it crossed over the path up to the slope. A few were seen today by others.

A deluge predicted tomorrow, rain supposedly torrential. Birding takes a holiday ?

Hi Peter,

Rob must have had psychic insight into today's cold/wind/lack of birds when he asked me to sub for him this week!  Today was stark contrast to yesterday, but 5 hearty souls persevered for over 5 hours.  We lost a few on the way and gained a few along the way.  Big THANK YOU to Bob O'Neil and Bambi for lending extra layers to those of us who were unprepared.  Also thank you to Shane Blodgett for calling Bob to tell us about a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron that was being seen today in the park and waiting for us to backtrack from the Peninsula. 

Kathy, please let me know if i missed anything.  i wasn't keeping great track. too cold!

Prothonotary Warbler tracking

Reported this morning in the Lulwater ,the stay over PROTHONOTARY WARBLER now has been reported by the Boulder Bridge,that spans the horse trail or in that Ravine vicinity by John Walsh and Dale Dancis

it appears the bird is settling or  favoring the Ambergill falls spot

Prospect AMERICAN BITTERN

Late April continues to bless Prospect with another rarity,this time an AMERICAN BITTERN.The birder of the day finding this rare heron was Bobbi Manian who spotted movement in the phragmites surrounding Three Sisters Islands' western island.The call went out for other birders who came upon the scene on the shore right of the cove.The bittern was perched up in the phragmites then.

A flash mob developed in the next hour or so according to sources, where the bittern was seen well, despite disappearing a few times deep in the phragmites.
The last report had the Bittern in its classic erect camouflage profile near the mute swan nest,according to friends.

You know pictures are coming so for now,the news is out for this quite wonderful discovery. Thanks to sharp eyes of Bobbi.

Three Sisters Island sits at the Lake's southern shore,about mid center.   Good luck to all and hopefully it sticks around all day.

Prospect Park Prothonotary Warbler

A well traveled Prothonotary warbler is all over the place ( that I
doubt is two birds), following Prospect Park,s watercourse.
First reported early this morning at the Lull water Bridge, then an
hour later at the Upper Pool dog beach, finally I lucked in with
spectacular views at the Binnen Falls, near the boathouse. Last reports
at noon placed the bird behind the Music Pagoda by Binnen Creek, north
of the Boathouse. While watching the cooperative Prothonotary, a number
of us watched skyward an adult BROADWINGED HAWK soaring over the
boathouse.

other decent birds was the long staying WORMEATING WARBLER at Ravines
Amber gill Falls, Spotted Sandpiper on the Peninsula.

Meanwhile, I received an early report HOODED WARBLER continued at
Greenwood Cemetery's Sylvan Waters slope south. Also,the residenr Red
Headed Woodpecker at Battle Ave plot 109.

More details later tonight on my blog when I recover from information
overload. :-)

After a long day of birding Kristin and I decided to unwind by, well, birding prospect water ways this evening :-) had the place to ourselves in nice sun shower. highlights included prothonotary warbler, blue wing teal flyover (2 male one female flying west over lake seen from southern shore near gazebo.) and 7 glossy ibis flyover spotted by Kristin (Flying east over lake seen from penna meadow shore.) an interesting little park list I thought.

A southern squall overnight, mix of old and new

The overnite squall brought in some new birds, most obvious the Prospect PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, and the target bird I had in mind HOODED WARBLER in Greenwood Cemetery. And in the cemetery both RED HEADED WOODPECKERS are in full glory,their red heads fully developed making my day and for others seeing the rare warblers a satisfying day.

The cemetery HOODED WARBLER fortunately for me stuck around , and a number of old friends saw the bird in cooperative manner. On the slope on the south side of Sylvan Waters, the HOODED WARBLER first appeared among Norway  saplings, behind the blossomed Saucer Magnolia Tree, then into the mature Yew Tree. It was a bright bird,easy to see and in full views.

In the cemetery as well, both RED HEADED WOODPECKERs continue their long stay : one at plot 109 at Battle Ave, the other by the intersection of Cypress and Grape Aves, along the Heliotrope path , before flying east along Cypress to a oak tree. The plot 109 bird was very well seen, in its favorite sycamore tree, then flying across the road to the lawn, then ascending to an oak.. awesome looks ,great bird...

But the highlight today was the new species , a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER found first at the back view of Upper Pool, the credit belonging to the founder Jim Muchmore. Various observers were present responding to twitter tweets... as reports came in thru the day , the bird was tracked to the following spots : Lull water by Terrace Bridge, Lull water by Rustic Arbor, and then this evening , Dennis H reported it across from the Peninsula Pink Beach (southern Lullwater), but acting very skittish and harder to see. North winds are in progress so its likely the rare warbler might stick around..hopefully.

BALD EAGLE was observed over the Nethermead mid afternoon by Kier.Also,worthy to mention,BANK SWALLOW at Sylvan Waters and I think the Lake.

See all the forwarded reports below for lists and photos. Not a lot of birds today,but that didn't dampen anybody's spirits seeing either HOODED or PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS.
