Fwd: eBird Report - Prospect Park, Aug 29, 2014

A good flight of birds following on the tail of the north wind bought out the birders.Though not epic, good birds and warbler sightings with some flycatchers made a day an enjoyable one in Prospect

The hi lights of the good morning were a sitting COMMON NIGHTHAWK in a tall cherry tree in the northern Lookout Hill section, BLACK BILLED CUCKOO,PHILADELPHIA VIREO, Hummingbirds, and at least 15 species warblers.Flycatchers include GREAT CRESTED,EASTERN WOOD PEWEE,OLIVE SIDED ( on Lookout hill,Dennis H,Mike Y,also Joshua ),LEAST and YELLOW BELLIED ( Dennis and Mike Yuan).

I had my best shot in free time available during a work day. Most impressionable was two RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS feeding on Cardinal Flowers in the Ambergill ,a treat watching a tandem of hummers chase each other and perching ,but more " illuminating" the gorgeous backlight hi lighting the very rapid wingbeats.

The following credits for the sightings: NIGHTHAWK spotted by Dennis Hrehowsik with Mike Yuan; BLACK BILLED Cuckoo spotted by Wada at Breeze Hill,PHILADELPHIA VIREO at Binnen Bridge by Chris Elliot.Joshua ( see his list prev post) seeing TENNESSEE & WORMEATING WARBLERS as well as RED BREASTED NUTHATCH.

It should continue decent birding tomorrow especially if winds shift a bit, halting migration for restful night in the park

Early observation Prospect

Better numbers of birds seen , only observed atop Lookout Hill meadows, compared to warmer previous days. A number of warblers were seen in the elm grove between the meadows, flycatchers evidently seen.

Only an hour to spare before checking in for work at 7, I made the most of it. Its early yet so birding should be better after the sunrise spell. Of the warblers I saw in the elm grove to Butterfly Meadow's pin oak at the northwest corner, my fall season first BLUE-WINGED WARBLER tops my personal list. There were CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, REDSTARTS, COMMON YELLOW THROAT , RED EYED VIREOS to add.Two EASTERN WOOD PEWEES in an upper Meadow snag , the flycatchers chasing each other was interesting. Wished I had more time but I cant show up at the office on a sick day  ;) ( though we get to leave by 130 for the holiday weekend. )

best of luck to birders today.

Common Nighthawk festival

In a good sign for tomorrow's birding, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were on the move tonight as northwest winds prevailed.

7 friends joined me tonight at the southwest corner of the Nethermead and we were not disappointed. A total of 14 Nighthawks entertained us ,some  right over us in good views and as the sun set, reflective light  made the drab birds light up .At one point as the nighthawks chose the hunting fields over the Lullwater,8 birds congregated in a single flock, insects mad birds happy tonight.

Be certain- if you are off- to bird tomorrow for a migration event. Depends on how good it will be.I'm sure my phone will be buzzing.

Hi Peter,

Hope you're having a great summer.
We had exceptional weather and a great group of maybe around 35-40 people including an attendee from Germany, San Diego, Denver, Syria, and even the Bronx.

We were also honored to have in the group Susan Bonfield, Director of Environment for the Americas, the organization that runs the International Migratory Bird Day.

It was fairly quiet, but we still had some good birds including 15 species of warblers.
Highlights were Prairie, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Green, good looks at Worm-eating thanks to Janet S's very sharp eyes, several Canada Warblers, a fly-by calling Red-shouldered Hawk, and more.

Here's the list. Let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,
Tom

Hi Peter,

4 Common Nighthawks over the Nethermead this evening.

wind predictions ( friday is good )

There is mentioned on Accuweather a west wind in the early evening hours tonight becoming south/southeast. So its anybody's guess tomorrow's bird numbers will be. Maybe some birds will try their luck and come thru anyway. But my guess the same today.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/new-york-ny/10007/hourly-weather-forecast/349727

But then Thursday the winds shift full northwest..so its looking like Friday prospectively is the good day for bird numbers ..

last note: late Thursday afternoon into evening might be productive  if north wind prevails then..nighthawks might take off in decent numbers among late day short migrants

http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/new-york-ny/10007/hourly-weather-forecast/349727?hour=41

Its all  timing.. you know the saying : ( especially for anyone off Friday )  " Thank God its Friday"

A cold front (north wind) is supposed to pass thru tomorrow evening. This means Thursday should be better  for birds compared to the last week. More tomorrow eve.

Prospect brief

A warm summery day hilighted by perched COMMON RAVENS in the Midwood (RBate) ended with partially shared named  species COMMON NIGHTHAWKS reported over Prospect north end  in the evening (Jett) ,five total after Mike Yuan's two over the Nethermead. Its about that time for the next two weeks ,so get thee out there in the early eve an hour at least before dusk.North winds might boost numbers.

My sightings early morning included two INDIGO BUNTINGS in early molt in Butterfly Meadow, one a female type ; most action occurred at Three Sisters Islands, a YELLOW WARBLER fest with at least 6 birds along with two WARBLING VIREOS.

Warm day tomorrow might be slow action.

HOODED WARBLER/Nighthawk Prospect

A HOODED WARBLER male continued into the late afternoon , early eve , the bird found by Gus Keri late morning in the southwest fence area of the Quaker Cemetery.. I didn't hold out much hope in the late afternoon but chanced it finding this good warbler.

Viewing from the mulch trail just west of the cemetery main gate, I uttered a quick "phish", and it worked. The handsome Hooded  appeared to my right , upon a dead large timber. For the next 15 minutes, working along the cemetery fence towards me, sometimes perched in the fence, it ended up in a pokeweed stand.

Back later again with Bob O'Neill, I saw the bird again but it offered a quick flash as it went back the other way and inside abit the cemetery. A nice bird to see, my real intent to finding this bird and whatever.  Up on Lookout Hill, quiet and expected on a warm day, CHIMNEY SWIFTS overhead in in good numbers. But surprise as I spotted a COMMON NIGHTHAWK along the south slope, a flyover heading Southwest/west.

There was a an assortment of warblers. Gus reported some nice ones, see his report in a previous post. I found besides the Hooded, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH in the same spot.James Merwin reported BLUE-WINGED WARBLER across the Center Drive. See his note before.

There is  according to Accuweather a quick north/northeast wind before it turns south late into the night. But whatever, go birding if you have the time, though early if you can.

Hi Peter,

It was a good birding day today.
the highlight was the Hooded Warbler which was near the Quaker's cemetery at the junction of West and Center drives. It stayed in that area for almost 30 minutes, initially near the big fallen tree and then it made its way eastward, toward the entrance of the cemetery. Also, I saw Nashville Warbler and Ovenbird in the same area. At the Rick's place in Midwood, I saw a Blue-Wing Warbler near the steps below Rick's place and a Worm-Eating Warbler at the horse path. Also noted Chestnut-Sided Warbler in three different places (lookout hill, Quaker's cemetery and the Midwood)

Prospect on east wind

In my first weekend venture into the park in many weeks, a simple casual stroll to look for some birds despite an east wind. Not much for expectations but anything worth it spending time just at Lookout Hill.

Thanks to Torin Waters, finding a CHESTNUT SIDED WARBLER with a BLACKBURNIAN helps make the morning. Later a report of PRAIRIE WARBLER in the paper mulberry tree above the Maryland Monument steps was reported along with ORCHARD ORIOLES.I got the latter with Gus Keri and Patty O'Kane. Also seen were BALTIMORE ORIOLES. I had a flash glimpse of a shorebird flyover very low at that spot but my guess was likely Solitary Sandpiper.

For me,Patty and Gus, it was the soaring REDTAILED HAWK being harassed by a pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS over the summit that delighted us. Later we also saw a soaring OSPREY,a prelude towards fall hawk migration.Earlier at Butterfly Meadow,AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES were active; I saw a GNATCATCHER being harassed by a Hummingbird at one of the low branches of the Pin Oak.

A list later after some Saturday errands.

Prospect

From Linda Ewing

Hi, Peter! As I mentioned when I saw you this morning, I had good luck with
water thrushes (northern, I presume, but I don't pretend to be able to tell them
apart): 6 sightings of at least 3 birds . . . in the Vale, by the south side of
the Lake (across from 3 sisters), and repeatedly in the Lullwater (probably
multiple birds but not sure).

Highlight was a male indigo bunting - molting but with lots of blue visible -
by the butterfly meadow. Also on Lookout were both northern and orchard
orioles.

Other than that: lots and lots of black and white warblers, yellow warblers and
hummingbirds. Also saw at least two spotted sandpipers working the south shore
of the lake.

Eni Falci and Michele Dreger also reported several waterthrushes as well possibly a Louisiana at Ricks Place.
