what action today

Besides the elusive Rail report,on this slow day, an active spot at Upper Pool.

First if you love WOOD DUCKS,the oak water snag at the back of the Upper Pool is worthy to look.On that thought, a beautiful sight to see twenty of these gorgeous ducks on the large oak snag. It deserves your visit.

Then in the Wildflower meadow a little song bird action.Despite sometimes difficult looks with the dense grasses and flowers,I spotted three INDIGO BUNTINGS,one a changing male with bright sky blue wings.Among the number of AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, in the elms backdrop, a RUBY CROWNED KINGLET and handsome BLUE HEADED VIREO worked the leaves.

Well Drive also had action.Warblers along there as Karen OHearn and I watched, BLACKBURNIAN,BLACKPOLL,NORTHERN PARULA,YELLOW RUMPED  and a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH nearly crushed by a giant Snapping Turtle in the marsh near the rail sighting. Its was a Goliath !

And a last note regarding the juvenile GREAT CORMORANT: it ranges widely around Prospect Lake. This afternoon it perched prominently on the water snag at West Island ,with a DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT.

Rail update near Wellhouse

From additional details from the original finder Neal Frumkin, the rail seen this morning at 11:30 in the phragmite marsh across from the under restoration Well house is thought to be a Clapper Rail based on its size and vocalizing.

I went there after work as did Karen and Kristin but we were unsuccessful. However later Dennis along with Joshua and Rachel tried but only a very fleeting glimpse seen by Rachel. However a vocalization was heard by Rachel and based on its description leans toward Clapper Rail.

Worth a stake out.. Starsky and Hutch anyone ?

Another surprising morning.  Today I started much early than the previous day (26 Sept 2014).  I had great views of the Great Cormorant by the lake.  Also I got my  1st time for PP, a Northern Harrier flying over Lookout Hill.
Warblers, amazing day, with 11 sps seen.  Chestnut-sided Warbler was a nice bonus to today's list.  At the Butterfly Meadow, I saw 3 Indigo Buntings.

Prospect

A busy workday but i took a quick run into the West Woods restoration site at lunchtime.. Two SWAMP SPARROWS were seen..The area is looking quite good for sparrow potential.

On the way home ,cutting across the Ballfield, a SAVANNAH SPARROW worked the chain link fence closing off field 1, with several PALM WARBLERS and a lone EASTERN PHOEBE. This enclosure also had great potential for field birds ..um sparrows..

Hi Peter,

Here is today's list from Rob's walk. Of note, the West Wood (recently enclosed area by picnic house) was very productive.  Warblers, including Bay-breasted still showing good color, FOS for many w.t. sparrow, flycatchers all active in the enclosed area.

There are a few things only Rob or only I saw before/after the walk, i put an R or B in front of those.   Kathy, did you have anything new after the hooded?

Gus, Kathy, Rob and I managed to see the hooded at one point or another today.  Attached crappy pic

best,
Bobbi

p.s.  next week, Kathy and I will co-lead the walk.

Hi Peter,

Today I led the group that won the bid for a private tour to support the Linnaean Society. As you know, it really was a fantastic day, with so many birds in the park.
The north winds after many days of south winds freed up a lot of birds to continue on their migration and many ended up here!

We had 63 species including 20 species of warblers.

Highlights were Adult Bald Eagle flying by the music pagoda, a brilliant Bay-breasted Warbler as well as an even cooler very drab one, the male Hooded Warbler, low Yellow-throated Vireo, and lots of Palm, Yellow-rumped, Pine, Blackpoll, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Blue-headed Vireos, White-throated Sparrows, and other harbingers of the last weeks of fall migration.

Here's the list.
