Prospect Blue winged TEAL seen with 14 Wood ducks Upper Pool from dog beach view

Hot, dud day and exotic bird

Just about the most "exciting" thing on this hot ,extremely slow day--albeit a few warblers and the native goldfinches in Butterfly Meadow--was a European Goldfinch, an exotic species . The escapee was spotted drinking at the water spot , along the road on the east edge of the Peninsula meadow where the road forks ( to pink beach) . As I drove by , the bird flew up into the cherry tree.Just a Yellow warbler and House Sparrows were its companions.

southwest stall

No thanks to a southwest wind, migration stalled in Prospect. Few birds and fewer warblers were observed.

On the way in, I spotted a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on the Lake shore. After this along with Rob Jett and Heydi Lopes up on Lookout Hill, spotted as well AMERICAN REDSTART,YELLOW WARBLER & BLACK THROATED GREEN Warblers were individual birds seen.

Likely my hilight was a gorgeous looking --with its clear perfect white  eyering on bright gray head was a female BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER in the slope section between Butterfly Meadow and summit. A more ragged looking gnatcatcher followed the likely younger bird.

Rob and Heydi mentioned that 14 WOOD DUCKS occupied both the Upper Pool and some in Lower Pool. The BLUE WINGED TEAL hen  stuck around..

It's going to be hot the next few days and maybe a lull with birds.

slowdown Saturday in prospect

Typical of the third day I find to be slow days after the northwest wind, today was not so bad after Thursday's northwest wind.Yes, the warbler numbers were low today yet we did find a quality species , but other species not a warbler had their day in the sun for my Brooklyn Bird Club walk.

Only 42 species -10 warbler species-were tallied but the group I led was treated to hilights of WORMEATING WARBLER ( found gleaning from dead leaves), YELLOW BELLIED FLYCATCHER and a BLUEWINGED TEAL,rare for Prospect. The first two species were sighted on the Peninsula Lullwater trail close to the pink concrete beach. The Teal duck lingered on Upper Pool with WOOD DUCKS.

Missed though as I received word was Mike Yuan's reported PHILADELPHIA VIREO on Lookout Hills south slope switchback trail by the Maryland Monument, seen in the upper section of the trail. His photo is in his Ebird report,in my previous post below.

A terrific day to enjoy birds under the sun.

warblers continue,bird variety

A bit of North wind early this morning fueled the early flight according to Joshua Malbins's report. His 15 species WARBLER hi lighted by a WORMEATING ,TENNESSEE, and BLUEWINGED were among the special ones in renown Butterfly Meadow.  You can see his report in a previous post below.

While I missed the early action due to family pickup at the airport and permitted late arrival at work,I was satisfied with a single warbler . Just before my lunch hour,I spotted a bird working the exotic type elm next to the Peninsula rustic shelter. After getting better vantages, enough was seen of the "baypoll series"  bird I was viewing to determine a BAY BREASTED WARBLER,an uncommon bird here.

With patience, a good list can be had without the need getting the numbers .
Have a good weekend.

todays warbler upgrade

The previous total for Prospect WARBLER species total has risen from 16 to 18.
Tom Stephenson's group recorded a Black throated Green , and Chris Elliot texted me he had Cape May.

Other notables I didnt have time to record earlier was YELLOW BELLIED FLYCATCHERS with Toms group and later Kathy Toomey. Joshua Malbin found a PHILADELPHIA VIREO on the Peninsula.

The first good day

Of more hopeful autumn migration days 2015  to come, today was the first good one. A variety of warblers came thru  with the usual and quality birds. Among them , 16 species warblers on my time and as my ear heard in Prospect, that of that high number I saw 14 species warblers plus a rare BOBOLINK.Also reported  from secondhand report, a GOLDEN WINGED WARBLER in Greenwood Cemetery caps the warbler array.

This early  before 7 am morning atop Lookout Hill was pretty good. With Keir Randall, then Joshua Malbin,we saw NASHVILLE, BLUE WINGED, BLACKBURNIAN as some of the good birds. Later I went back up for another quick look and saw a fluttery midsized bird flying over the Butterfly Meadow; it thereby perched atop the big oak overlooking the northwest Stairs, After me watching it closely, it turned out to be a BOBOLINK.

Thru the day I heard more stuff. TENNESSEE WARBLER at Esdale Bridge as well as Three Arches Bridge was another quality bird. On my lunch hour, I decided to bird the Peninsula, usually a reliable late morning spot. It was a good choice as I saw at least 8 species warblers, among them PRAIRIE, CANADA, BLACK THROATED BLUE, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, & NORTHERN PARULA.

The GOLDEN WINGED WARBLER at Crescent Warbler in Greenwood Cemetery reported at 10:30 ish was observed by Isaac Grant.
