Happy Halloween birds

Hilight for this day included up to 5 or 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS,  several at the Lower Pool, likely also at Upper Pool shores. However Linda Ewing sent a report of perhaps additional Rusties. One was on the West Island cove plastic covering.

See her post :

Hi, Peter! Link to checklist below. Highlights were an abundance of phoebes (five was a conservative count), a northern parula south of the lake, and a total of 7 rusty blackbirds . . . one on the tarp by West island; and a total of six still by the lower pool where you’d seen at least four earlier. I had just finished counting three when another three flew in to join them.

Linda E.

Meanwhile over at more appropriate Halloween venue Greenwood Cemetery, Orrin Tilevitz reported 2 AMERICAN WOODCOCK  that most times flush when people walk by.Those woodcocks were at  along Central Avenue and Alcove path. One needs to be lucky for these wayward birds.

Also with my busy weekend schedule, it slipped by me that Gus Keri reported a pair of GREEN WINGD TEALS in the Lullwatre, one drake.

and last most bizarre,  Joshua Malbin reported 5 ROYAL TERNS over Greenwood Cemetery over the weekend. This is a spectacular sighting for the salty species there... but anything is possible with Brooklyn being an "island".

Happy Halloween Folks !  Be safe

Hi Peter,

we had 23+ birders show up for today's walk in Greenwood.  Lots of new faces, lots of good spotters.  We birded around the 4 waterways.  4 warbler species and 7 sparrow species *AND* we won the Brooklyn Triple Crown - Ruby, Golden and Orange.

Mary E found 2 Orange Crowned Warblers by the new mausoleums, and somehow we managed to get a rather large group on them.   Attached OCWA photo by Karen O

best,
Bobbi

Those crazy woodcocks

Central park birder Bob DeCandido posted on Facebook group New York Birders today a photo of an American Woodcock sitting in the backyard of an Art gallery located in Park Slope.

Perhaps the bird admires good art like American Gothic ?

Hey Peter,

it was a great autumn day for birding.  my list for today is http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32242943
Of note was a big influx of Hermit Thrushes - they were everywhere, and the Long Meadow was full of Juncos - maybe 200 or more.
i tried unsuccessfully to get all the 8 rustys in one pic.
best,
karen

Scarlet-Tanager_Greg-Lavaty_Action-Alert_Email.jpg
Right now, the U.S. Congress is working to put together a bill to fund the government for Fiscal Year 2017. Congress has an opportunity to boost much-needed funding levels for bird conservation programs as a result of the budget compromise last fall. But much more is at stake.
Migratory birds are in trouble. Habitat loss and other threats are causing dramatic population declines in species like Scarlet Tanager (shown). The decline of migratory birds signals a potential crisis that Congress must act now to reverse. One positive step forward is to sufficiently fund the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act and Migratory Bird Joint Ventures at the highest level possible.

Rusties, Juncos and Chippies

This mid afternoon , I ran into Karen O'Hearn. Her report is intriguing.

First a very good number of eight RUSTY BLACKBIRDS reported near the Picnic House, under an oak tree, feeding on the ground. Occasionally the flock would fly up into the oak.

Then at the north end of the Long Meadow, also under trees, a frenzy of Dark Eyed Juncos and Chipping Sparrows, numbering a mixed flock of 300 birds. This is the highest number I heard of this fall known for sparse sparrow numbers. I've seen really big days of sparrows in past autumns but this year wasn't so kind. So, a good number for today observed by Karen with promised photos to come.

Also Kathy Toomey reported sparrow activity in the Sparrowbowl , the valley between the Picnic and Tennis houses per her 3:24 tweet .. Mostly Chippies, Juncos and Song.. hmm, good lyrics there.

Cattle Egret at Bush Terminal Pier Park

There's been a spate of this rare egret species around the area, but a total unexpected sighting occurred at Bush Terminal Pier Park.

From Gus Keri's video on his Facebook page, the CATTLE EGRET was inside the ball field with artificial turf...

It looks like a new species for this young park on Brooklyn's coast....

Never expected to see that ...

also in Gus' words at Bush Terminal : " Bush Terminal Pier's park: Cattle Egret, Common Raven (2) and Killdeer.
Owl's Head park: Brown Creeper (3), Red-breasted Nuthatch (2) and Black-capped Chickadee.
