PROSPECT

Eastern Bluebird (heard) - east slope Lookout Hill by Sean Sime

Common Merganser on Prospect Lake by Sean

Prospect Lake Merg

The drake COMMON MERGANSER continues its remarkable stay on the Lake.

On my quick scan around 355 pm, I could see the Merganser just off the Peninsula thumb. Much nearer a hen American Wigeon and off to the left Well house shore was the lone Pied billed Grebe. These made up for the lack of numbers at that hour.

A tribute to the Ridgewood Reservoir grassroots activism

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can    change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."                                                                                                           --Margaret Mead

Its not too often that grassroots conservationists win battles to save a precious green space from the wrecking ball, development that threaten one such place on the Brooklyn Queens county line; a battle that took over ten long years to fight. In the end, it's a well deserved tribute to those who stayed dedicated, plugging away in the right civil, constructive manner to save Ridgewood Reservoir.

During my presidency of the Brooklyn Bird Club, I received an ordinary note from dance artist Jennifer Monson I believe is the correct name (apologies if not ) way back around 2007. Being a practical person , I happily passed along the note to friends Rob Jett , Steve Nanz and Heidi Steiner-Nanz at the time ,knowing they had the communicative and organization skills to pursue this matter further. It was a very significant decision as those friends stayed the course for over eleven years to the final victory that resulted in NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Wetland Protection status this past October. From that first years, Rob , Steve and Heidi took the issue to the Queens birders, particularly Christina Wilkinson.  The rest is history as the green treasure was bought to the Community board's attention, the community,  elected officials and other heavy hitters, advocates like NYC Audubon and so on. You can read more in Christina's note on Rob Jett's blog Save Ridgewood Reservoir and Christina's Newtown Historical Society org blog below.

I was happy to play a very minor role in writing well timed letters. It was very important to get the word out and reach many people as possible, community and elected representatives and agency heads. One letter was written during my presidency that was picked up by the Queens local newspapers and newsletters, etc. My most recent letter as President emeritus about  a year and half ago to NYSDEC; I was told  yesterday that letter was formally replied to by NYSDEC. The meetings everyone else went to over the long years is their dedicated effort. I am limited from meetings due to personal communication shortcomings and other practical reasons. Credit also go to my BBC successors Rob Bate and Dennis Hrehowsik with support of the Council in following up .

So, the real credit goes all out to Rob Jett, Steve Nanz, Heidi and Christina and countless others I'm bereft of who was involved. So.. well done and congratulations to all involved in achieving a great victory after a long fight.

In greater significance though, we saved urban habitat for wildlife and birds: that's worth the tireless fight.

PS.In May we will have a Ridgewood walk . Check out the Brooklyn Bird Club Trips page next month.

Dear all,

Happy New Year!

I'm pleased to report that the Ridgewood Reservoir was officially designated a wetland on 10/24/2018. The Queens Parks Commissioner received a notification letter on 12/21/2018 from the DEC. We obtained a copy of this just today from her office:

Congratulations to us and everyone who helped along the way since way back in 2007. The wetlands designation request was actually submitted some time in 2010 which means it only took 8 years for them to get serious about it.

Christina

Two Monday notables

Prospect Monday starts off the week with the continuing COMMON MERGANSER and a nice surprise BALD EAGLE.

First seen on New Year's Day,the drake Merganser casually patrols the Lake from Duck Island to West Island cove. Its an unmistakable bird to spot with its white body and green head.

Dan Smith during his observation of the Merganser spotted a flyover Bald eagle over the Lake this morning. It was heading west, towards Greenwood Cemetery airspace.

Two Fox Sparrows spiced things up at the feeders with the usual winter avian visitors.

Otherwise,it's quiet Monday ,yet a few good birds to be glad seeing.

Common Merganser (Mergus merganser) (1)

Feeder surprise

Like a rabbit's foot, yesterday Common Merganser seemed to shed some luck for today's bird surprise.

At the feeders, an unexpected juvenile WHITE CROWNED SPARROW put in an appearance  reported by Rob Bate. Its not usual to get these birds here in Prospect around this time. Other places like Jersey rural spots, yes, but not here.

A quick check of Ebird reveals one record in January.

What it means to bird New Year's Day

Birders have different reasons birding New Year's Day. For some,it's a start of a Big Year; others seek quality birds; and still some it's a beginning of a new year nature journey. For me, it's about celebration. Observing birds reinvigorates the sentimentality and spirit,an opportunity to  meet old friends and new, always keeping in mind for old times sake, reconnecting with people and sharing the beauty of birding, while rewards may come about.

It's a good omen when January 1st starts off with a great bird, rewarding a group of birders chancing upon seeing it. The Brooklyn Bird Club kicked off the new year with its annual ( in most years) Prospect walk. Led by Dennis Hrehowsik and Bobbi Manian from the Pergola entrance, folks lucked in seeing a rare COMMON MERGANSER on the Lake. This beautiful drake stayed on towards mid-afternoon when I refound it,diving off eastern shore of Three Sisters Islands. It made two forays into West Island cove, diving abit and then wading. A terrific sighting for New Year's Day.

Auld Lang Syne everyone!
