HOWA Vale

Hooded Warbler (Setophaga citrina) (1)
- Reported Sep 30, 2019 08:39 by Peter Paul
- Prospect Park, Kings, New York
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=40.6602841,-73.9689534&ll=40.6602841,-73.9689534
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60247379
- Comments: "In the vale in the morning, skulking and difficult, but good enough looks a few times. First year bird. Yellow face with green hint of a hood, white outer tail feathers. Eventually it flew back and either out of the vale or on the slope behind, but I never saw it again. "

Sylvan Water"spout"

Sylvan Water in Greenwood Cemetery really hit the sweet spot today . And birds found there were all rarities on all sides of the big pond.

On the pond's south side the LARK SPARROW continued from yesterday's Border Ave spot; then unknowingly a bird photographed turned out to be a DICKCISSEL found on the west area; then add a SUMMER TANAGER above Sylvans north ridge; all these birds were found by Paige Linden- Brams. Finally on the south slope with Chipping sparrows, Tripper Paul found a CLAY COLORED SPARROW.

WHEW.. now that's a waterspout there.  😄

- Comments: "Found by Rob J and Josh M. Not seen for a long time after. I eventually found it back where it had originated associating with a group of Chipping Sparrows. Medium sized Sparrow, obviously larger than the CHSPs. Harlequin facial pattern, long tail, v-shaped spot on breast. "

quiet north wind

There was a north wind at some point early this morning but it was quiet.I guess everything went earlier this week.

A few reports though for the record from today's birding. Hilights were Yellow billed Cuckoo, Rose breasted Grosbeaks and continuing Philadelphia Vireo. The Cuckoo was spotted by Ryan Goldberg, a cooperative bird up near Butterfly Meadow. The Rose Breasteds spotted by Ryan, Karen and Bob flew back and forth over Well Drive by the 3 shipping containers. And last the Philadelphia Vireo stay put in Greenwood Cemetery but at Sylvan Water area.

At this point warblers are fading away ( with more coming but their numbers dropping off) and pretty soon they will be displaced by the incoming sparrows.... Its the flow of the season...

Update: The Philly Vireo report has been retracted by the observer , misidentified.

but the following report was posted for your review

Hi Peter,

Beautiful day today, and lots of good birds. The park was turned around from its state in the last two weeks: many of the good birds were in the North with fewer in the South.

Birds were still somewhat spotty, with many birds north of the vale, and not many past that prior to the South end, where there were some more flocks; so we did a lot of walking.

Highlights include a brief view of the Yellow-breasted Chat at the south end (thanks to Isabel), not including which, we had 14 species of warblers including 2 or 3 Tennessees Warblers, several Rose-breasted Grosbeak males, the Great Cormorant (they're still here...), Wood and Swainson's Thrush, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and lots more.
Here's the list and a few photos.

Best regards,
Tom

GWC Philly vireo

One of the prettiest birds in my book , mostly seen in fall migration is PHILADELPHIA VIREO.
One was reported at Greenwood Cemetery.

The beneficiary was Rob Jett. Rob spotted the uncommon vireo in a Holly Tree adjacent to the George Catlin Native American Sculpture,

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/183/george-catlin

Yellow breasted Chat in Prospect

Clarifying Will Pollard's late morning sighting, the rare former warbler was spotted in the east grove that is overshadowed by the giant Redwood tree , mere steps away form the Lake drain at Prospect Lake south shore.

Other news : the Peninsula was good this morning  with multiple Black throated Green and a single Blackburnian Warblers according to a passing birder. In fall, I always hear or personally seen the Peninsula as a great spot , a mini-trap land feature for migratory birds. Sometimes even the late afternoon is still good under the right conditions.

Todays forecast and the early reports

With the forecast of a good northwestern winds, early reports indicated good birding activity with Greenwood Cemetery getting the upper hand on its neighbor.

First report though not specifically on species focused on the general activity. Orrin Tilevitz and later Paige Linden texted and tweeted respectively good waves at Greenwood. First at Central Ridge , Orrin reported a good variety of warblers, vireos, thrushes and woodpeckers. Paige reported 2 hours later the upper ridge overlooking Sylvan Water being quite birdy. I'll try to look up the checklists if any as well as Prospect with links below.

As busy as I'm  with work, wishing i was out there, its life as it is...

click on the dates for the birders checklist in the following GWC checklist and check back often into the evening

Doug Gochfeld will be doing his usual sunrise/early morning morning songbird etc flight watch from Coney Island Creek park;  here's his info:

doug@fieldguides.com
It’s a bit last second, but I am planning to be at Coney Island Creek Park tomorrow morning for morning flight. There should be some warblers, and hopefully they won’t be too high up (the wind is projected to be fairly light, which often leads to some birds being higher.

Anyway, I’m happy to entertain and/or educate those that would want to come. I’m planning to arrive as close to sun The park is on Bayview Ave. between 37th and Seagate Ave.

I will be in the dunes at the NW corner of the park, around where the red pin in the attached screenshot is (coordinates: 40.5814764, -74.0061100).

I can’t commit to personally giving any rides tomorrow to or from therrise as possible, perhaps earlier.

KB Note:  The B36 bus stops at Bayview Ave. between 37th and Seagate Ave Take the B36 from the Stillwell Avenue MTA Subway stop.

Goodbye to Sean Zimmer

Image result for clip art saw whet owl

A hearty goodbye and much gratitude to Sean Zimmer who has moved to Massachusetts last week..

The Brooklyn Bird Club is grateful to Sean for the few times he has led club walks;personally for me Sean was a tremendous help on my leg of the Prospect Park South Xmas counts ,oftentimes my asking him to lead a split team to cover more areas quicker as he was quite a skilled birder. I recalled one time he came into the Quaker Cemetery with me and found a second Prospect Xmas count Northern Saw Whet Owl high in the big white Pine, thanks to his sharp eye!

So long Sean and good luck and good boiding up in Mass!

Beautiful weather today...and lots of crickets singing....
For the first half of the trip this AM that's what I thought this report was going to be about....BUT....we finally reeled in a good number of species, including 14 warblers and 51 total bird sp.

It was a tie for most individuals between Northern Parula and Eastern Wood-pewee...

All-in-all lots of fun. Here's the list.

Best regards,

Fwd: Peregrine falcon

The windflower and the violet, they perished long ago, And the brier-rose and the orchis died amid the summer glow; But on the hills the golden-rod, and the aster in the wood, And the yellow sunflower by the brook, in autumn beauty stood, Till fell the frost from the clear cold heaven, as falls the plague on men, And the brightness of their smile was gone, from upland glade and glen.

GWCemetery report from Orrin T

Interesting variety of birds at Green-Wood this morning, if not a flood.  Blue-gray gnatcatcher, winter wren and some promising warblers around Pine Avenue-Central Avenue, olive-sided flycatcher at Crescent Water, a couple of juvenile rose-breasted grossbeaks at the nearby catacombs.  Along with flickers, lots of redstarts, black and white, common yellowthroat, juvenile chestnut-sided, etc.

Hi Peter,

we had a good sized group today and the park was fairly active, especially around the picnic tables by the lake and lookout.  The Wednesday weeding crew cleared a nice patch of Butterfly Meadow and that enticed a very cooperative Wilson's Warbler to put on a show for us.  List is below.

Best,

Fwd: Extinct in New York - Governors Island

From conservationist Bart Chezar on Art exhibit Gov Island plants extinction from NYC.

Hi All,

I am sending this e-mail to the distribution list concerning my work with the American chestnut and, eelgrass and Sargassum.  I apologize for those on both lists who will get this e-mail twice.

There is an exhibit on Governors Island I believe you may find interesting - https://lmcc.net/lmcc-arts-center-at-governors-island/michael-wang-extinct-in-new-york/  .  This exhibit is an artistic display of plants that have gone "Extinct in New York".  It runs from September 19th to October 31 (Thursday – Sunday 12pm – 5pm.

A couple of months ago the artist, Michael Wang, met with me and I provided him with American chestnut seedlings for the exhibit.  I spoke with him about my work with eelgrass, Zostera marina, and Sargassum filipendula and their prior history in New York harbor.  He decided to include them in the exhibit and obtained specimens from Steve Schott at the Cornell Extension Service.

Though I have not seen the exhibit yet, I look forward to visiting it soon.  If you know others who might be interested in seeing the exhibit please pass on the link.

Regards,

Bart

Where the pinball drops

Image result for pinball clip art

A pinball travels at the mercy of gravity and bumps and physics whatever before it drops in a hole.Likewise its the same in my view with bird migration during a good wind.

When a cold front passage occurs, along that front are bandwidths of birds. Some band widths may be thick with birds; others much thinner. ON Lookout Hill, a premier location for northwest wind fronts, it wasn't much activity at either meadow, Butterfly or the summit. Kathy Toomey did report scarlet tanager, rose breasted grosbeak, blackpoll warbler, redeye & warbling vireo with magnolia warbler. I walked around and didn't see anything , my poor timing as well as the harsh glare undermining my ability seeing stuff; heck when I did the birds hide well in the thick foliage.

Meanwhile my friend Orrin reported over at Greenwood Cemetery's Central Ridge a "zoo of birds" Warblers, vireos and thrushes were the name of the game.

IT comes down to your lucky location, location and location....
