Monday Sparrow diversity

Monday seemed like a quiet day but here and there in Prospect there was reported diversity of sparrows.

Without naming them, Ryan Goldberg in the afternoon reported 10 species sparrows mostly along the ballfields to the Tennis House area. Tops was the continuing VESPER SPARROW at Ballfield three. Joining him on my sparrow jaunt list, I found a FIELD SPARROW in front of the Breeze hill feeders location lawn ( No feeders up yet). Karen Ohearn saw a LINCOLN SPARROW at the base of the Hammerhead at southwest Prospect Lake.

Before running into Karen and Chris Las on Well Drive, both saw the continuing WILSONS WARBLER on Lookout Hill south slope behind the three shipping containers at Well Drive opposite the boat ramp.

Over at Greenwood Cemetery, Orrin reported an AMERICAN WOODCOCK on Dell Avenue. He also reported 3 WOOD DUCKS on Sylvan Water and a late female BLACK THROATED BLUE WARBLER.

This is my rush hour report for Monday morning :)

Prospect lake early duck haven

After the rains, the sun was peeking through motivating me to get out. A walk to Prospect lake seem like a sensible idea.

One quick look from the shore I see a dispersed number of
RUDDY DUCKS & NORTHERN SHOVELERS,an estimated 80 birds. Off towards the peninsula thumb a pair of PIED BILLED GREBES waded by the thumb point; off to the right perched under Three Sisters westetn island,a pair of WOOD DUCKS rested on tree snags above water.

I took a farther walk towards the Wellhouse. From this vantage I spotted a nice surprise , a pair of RING NECKED DUCKS, hanging out with the Ruddies near the distant shore. It's likely the first of season for this handsome species..

A check of the upper or outer Lullwater was my last spot check. Here I found more Shovelers with a single drake Wood Duck with them. By now my feet were wet from the soaked lawns so it was smart to head homeward.

"Hot" Field 2

Merlin

Prospect's Ballfield #2 at the west end of Long Meadow continues to be the hub for sparrows and a Bluebird today with a roving Merlin taking swipes at everything.

Along the dugouts , especially when I took lunch , the dugout at first base hosted FIELD, VESPER, and a good number of CHIPPING SPARROWS. Both the Field and Vesper were inside the dugout affording great looks of both eye ringed sparrows. I especially love the Field Sparrow with its boyish look. Chippings were all over the place using the fence as cover. A good thing in a way, as a MERLIN suddenly swooped in like a cruise missile along the ground on the outside of the fence, just feet from me. A bold falcon and a great bird to love for its audacity .

The Merlin I was told was doing much ground hovering swipes at birds on the ground. It even buzzed a birder  as it flew right over her. This Merlin used the whole morning to continually make forays around the ballfields.

Quite a number of SONG SPARROWS were present, especially along the woods fence and mound behind Field 7.

A bonus bird this morning while she was looking at the Vesper Sparrow, Paige Linden-Brams reported seeing above field 2 an EASTERN BLUEBIRD.

Enjoy your weekend.

Local rare sparrow day

When I drove by in my work vehicle,I saw three ladies in the distance looking at birds at fields 2&3. I had a good feeling they were observing the Vesper Sparrow.

Making sure my quiet approach  was from field 3` s second base,I asked the ladies- Linda,Toni and Ellen if they had the VESPER. Yep and even better there's two! In front of field 2 third base, both chunky birds with the bright eye rings were feeding deep in the short grass along with a Savannah Sparrow. I'm glad the Vesper sparrows stuck around  and they did throughout the morning between the dugouts and once seen on the right dugout bench.

It appeared active today with birds and sparrows. On my various work trips I noted several Hermit thrushes along Lookout Hill north paths;Sparrow flocks flushed upward into trees as I drovedby noisily.Chippings and juncos I presume were those birds

Meanwhile over at Greenwood cemetery Sylvan Water the GRASSHOPPER SPARROW emerged along the west slope according to Karen O'hearn in mid-afternoon.It disappeared shortly after.

A grasshopper at butterfly meadow

Seen During Brooklyn bird club volunteer event. Bob photo on INaturalist which I'd it as American Bird Grasshopper. ( Seriously )

Ballfield vesper

Prospect sees its first fall VESPER SPARROW ,a rarity that's annual and a good bird to find.

Karen O'hearn reported the finding at field 2 before it flushed by a raptor. Later the Vesper sparrow in early afternoon was found by Kathy Toomey at field 3 the adjacent field both sharing a protective alley between the dugouts. It's best though to bird the area between 9 am and 3 pm after the dogs and before the school  track runnersat western Long Meadow.

Another good bird appeared at Greenwood cemetery. A RED HEADED WOODPECKER perched on a Ginkgo tree along the Warrior path which is near the soldiers of civil war monument. The observer was Linda Ewing

Ruddy returns

Sitting on the bench by Prospect lake western shore, I obviously see the return of the Ruddy Duck. Their numbers over twenty birds in the setting Sun glow matches the northern shovelers flock.

Spread out and in some areas clustered, the Ruddy Duck have totally lost their renown complexion. The same can't be said for the shovelers which are in breeding plumage as the drakes will court the hens over the winter spell. Off to the south are a pair of Wood ducks, the Drake obviously better more outstanding plumaged birds. The bland Mallards are in outlying places. A pair of Double crested Cormorants and a sizable number of Canada Geese fill out the rest of the waterfowl population.

Whether you are ready or not, winter is coming, with icons represented by the duck.

Saturday's Grasshopper

Greenwood Cemetery got today's highlight bird, actually two good birds with one rare find near the Civic Virtue statue. And then there are those late birds that makes things interesting around this time.

The top bird is GRASSHOPPER SPARROW. This ammodramus species-- always a prized find --was found by Rob Jetts entourage about 330 near Civic Virtue after a morning leading the BBC to Floyd Bennett. In the same vincinity,a young DICKCISSEL was reported by Joshua earlier. Lastly also in Greenwood, the continuing female or juvenile BLUE GROSBEAK hangs out at Dellwater.

Meanwhile over at Prospect, interesting sightings makes October fun. Two Black Vultures drifted over Grand Army Plaza ,resighted at the Nethermead meadow airspace shortly after. Add in yellowish Tanager ( and also in GWC)  in the Sparrowbowl & a late American Redstart for good birds.

Day of the Chippie

A chippy gusty wind bought in an influx of one species sparrow: Chipping Sparrow. It's at least a start with numbers. Now if we only encourage the rest of those usual sparrows to follow suit.

Will Pollard in the Sparrowbowl mentioned to me that he saw at least a hundred Chippies at the ballfields. In the afternoon as I worked the Sparrowbowl I spooked at least 25 of these birds .their skittishness allowing me to observe them in the fence as the grass along the fence edge was deep. But the grasses there offered plenty of food and cover. After work I wandered over to the ballfields now plagued by track runners and still some Chippies flushed up to the dugout fence of field 2.

Earlier with Will, a late Scarlet Tanager was spotted by Will that I couldn't locate thanks to the harsh glare.

A big wind today but hopes abound with maybe more birds tomorrow.

Hi Peter,
I'd like to say we were blown away by the birds in the park today....but.....we were just blown away....I also saw several small dogs flying through the air, which was a highlight.

That being said, it was a very nice, brisk, fall day, with a few good birds including several Golden-crowned Kinglets, lots of Yellow-rumps, a wigeon, a few Ruddy Duck and more. We ended up with 7 warbler sp, as well as a few sparrow sp including Field and quite a few Chipping Sparrows.

Here's the list.

Where are the Prospect sparrows?

I spent a little time birding prospect mid morning with intention of finding sparrows.  For this middle October date, we should be peaked with them. Unfortunately I found only one spot with a decent number.

The Prospect ballfields field 2 third base line offered the best for today. The fence along the dugout shield the birds as they feed within the grass blades. Several Savannah Sparrows fed along with about 8 Chipping s. That was about it. Later with Rafael Campos we found nearly 12 Chippings at field 6.

The best hilight regards the Wood Duck. Looking thru a now open understory clearing from the Long Meadow fence at Lower Pool,I counted 18 of this species in the left corner. The Drake's are looking finely plumaged.

The tweet hilight for today was sent by Kathy Toomey over at Greenwood cemetery. The hillside grassland near the chapel or by a path there saw an AMERICAN WOODCOCK.

A puzzling month for sparrows though have us hoping for a month end flourish.

Sparrowbowl stuff

A day after a female Bobolink was reported by Radka, a few observations were noted in the Sparrowbowl.

While I was birding the fifteen minutes before noon in Sparrowbowl,I observed flocks of Common Grackles flying over. This was after I heard birders there reporting Wilson's warbler and Blue headed Vireo. A few sparrow species- still below expected numbers were seen nothing unusual. A good bird though was spotted later by Kathy T,a White eyed Vireo.

Meanwhile to the south above Prospect's Well house,Karen O'hearn reported Orange crowned Warbler on the restored hillside.

I took a late afternoon walk along southwest Lake and saw things, happy to see something on this gorgeous fall day. My list from the Hammerhead west cove included Yellow rumped Warblers,Common Yellowthroat and Red winged Blackbirds. In Willow Swamp, a western Palm warbler and Gray Catbird  made my moment.

Someone asked me about the Bobolink I missed posting yesterday. The truth is I only follow 22 Twitter accounts ( tho I have 600+ followers) whose handlers post only high quality species. This makes my time precious as I have no desire to be inundated by tweets about everything-  from common birds, general stuff ,even political opinions-- all day.  That's the way i keep life tranquil especially during work hours 😉

Late note: reported in Vale Cashmere: late Scarlet Tanager & Rose breasted grosbeak

a crack in the Sparrow door

Exhibit Clipart
In a hopeful sign for those very tardy sparrows at this date, at least 6 sparrow species were reported today in Prospect. The highlight continues to be the LARK SPARROW of south Prospect Lake.

Kathy Toomey along with Bob ONeill spotted the Lark Sparrow on the mainland in a tree opposite the Three Sisters Islands. I have Kathy's photo that I will forward soon in the next post. Further detail from Kathy when I ran into her revealed it was hanging out with a House Sparrow flock . Apparently it roves and elusive as I have found out several times I went searching unsuccessfully for it including this afternoon.

At the famed Sparrowbowl west of the Picnic House, a juvenile WHITE CROWNED SPARROW led a few sparrow there, according to Maureen. Also spotted was SAVANNAH, SWAMP , SONG and WHITE THROATED. A third birder Radka reported a LINCOLNS in the Vale of Cashmere.

Other mention from Kathy and Bob was while on Well Drive, they watcedh a mini -kettle of hawks above Lookout Hill's south face. In the kettle was SHARP SHINNED, COOPERS, MERLIN and two REDTAILED HAWKS.

It's a trickle but a start hopefully for the weekend.
