National Park Service Pledges To Reopen Floyd Bennett Field To Gardeners - BKLYNER

https://bklyner.com/national-park-service-pledges-to-reopen-floyd-bennett-field-to-gardeners/

I can't understand why the buses couldn't be stored at a secure airport?  And why the national park administration go out on a limb for the city doing such favors that punished the public.. it's a huge park n it's closed just for 100 buses?? Like Star trek Mr spock says : Illogical.. 🤔

Park enforcement numbers

seems like stories I have been hearing and reading out of Prospect Park points to a Wild Wild West sideshow: fisherman jumping fences into the protected Upper and Lower Pools, many dogs off leash in woodlands and grasslands ,hostile confrontations with rogue dog owners, vandalism fence breaks,  so   on so on  and so on..
(almost like an anarchy in progress)
My suggestion is never confront miscreants.just call and pester Park Enforcement Patrol even with their spotty enforcement..you never going to win as a private citizen with those who easily and arrogantly ignore you and you risk harm to yourself and jeopardize your well being with hostile folks.
(who the heck needs the unnecessary stress?)

here are the numbers for local and central HQ PEP  Park Enforcement Patrol

718 437 1350

central 646 613 1200

call 311 as well if you want to document the complaint.. its best you do this as well during the epidemic crisis when no police are around , thinking everything is fine.. (on the contrary)

Also, tho im not familiar doing it, using @twiitername and hashtag on twitter the proper authorities or prospect park city, etc as i have noted with tweets i read. Its publicity on a bigger scale.  heck even your local  elective assemblyperson and councilperson if u want...

Dear BBC members,

We miss you but hope you are keeping safe.  Due to current circumstances, we are postponing our annual birdathon and fundraiser until October, however, we are honoring World Migratory Bird Day in May with a week-long celebration of Spring migration in Brooklyn.

While we can't form teams and beat the bushes (terminals) of Brooklyn with our friends looking for birds, we do have a way for everyone to participate.

More details to follow, but we will be holding a CBC-style week of birding from May 6-12, with participants covering and reporting on their local patches.  So get your bins polished and practice not getting them fogged up as you bird locally and responsibly with a mask on.  Stay tuned!

Hi Peter,

Here is my checklist from the park this morning: https://ebird.org/checklist/S67533490.

I started a little later than normal hoping to avoid all the off-leash dogs running wild in the park. It's arguable whether I succeeded in that.

But there were clearly a number of birds that arrived overnight. I sensed it could be a good morning when a towhee woke me up at 6:30 singing in my courtyard -- a mile and a half away from the park.

Staying lighthearted while quarantined...

I was supposed to be in Arizona birdwatching this weekend with friends but alas I'm  home in Brooklyn. Since we were flying there, why not be lighthearted about it ? Here's a nice joke

Vultures

As migration approached, two elderly vultures doubted they could make the trip south, so they decided to go by airplane. When they checked their baggage, the attendant noticed that they were carrying two dead raccoons.

"Do you wish to check the raccoons through as luggage?" she asked.

"No, thanks," replied the vultures. "They're carrion."

warning message from Jamaica Bay

The National Park service is strongly considering closing the wildlife refuge and locking up the parking lot as there are a number of folks who continue to violate the rules of the park such as bike riding on the trails
bringing dogs down on the trails and walking off trail
we hope doesn’t come to this and in effort to try to keep it open we are trying to get the word out as some folks are not aware of the rules but if you were going to the park please try to ensure that you stay on the trail you follow social distancing rules you do not bring your dog and you do not ride your bike down there
hopefully people could help us get the word out on this issue as it has been a great asset during this quarantine.
