Floyd Bennett Field STILL Closed

https://rockawaytimes.com/index.php/columns/6459-floyd-bennett-field-closed

Guess the field is still closed just to store NYC buses THAT COULD BEEN stored at the airport.. meanwhile big open space a wasted opportunity for birders and outdoor socially distanced minded folks.  🤔🙄

Update: my inquiry on FB got a friend who tells me Floyd is still closed..  it's just for 100 city buses...

Mercury with Venus this eve

I was lucky tonight! My friend Donna lives down the block from me by the prospect expressway texts me and asks if that was Venus low over the horizon . Unknown to me she's on her roof. I have a problem with tall homes and trees blocking the view where tonight Crescent Venus is in conjunction with Mercury which is hard to get cause of its innermost orbit never rises high enough. Anyway after getting Donna s text I rushed out to look. And sonagun a sliver of sky between a house and tree there's Venus ! And initially I couldn't find mercury but I was looking too near Venus and thus exxpanding my search I find pale white Mercury!  Just below at 7  am direction Just awesome!   Thanks to Donna. Here's my lucky view. 1 pm from the street lamp is Venus bright spot next to the tree.

Why Venus is crescent?

Hi Peter,
There was a big exodus over the weekend. Some tasty leftovers were still present.
Chestnut-sided, Wilson's, Magnolia, Canada, and numerous Blackpoll and Bay-breasted warblers.
These two Brown Thrashers were finding plenty of small morsels.

NYC Audubon - This is why bird-safe building legislation is so important. Dozens of spring migrants were found dead this Saturday outside Circa Central Park, a bird-killing building facing the northwest corner of Central Park. Sadly, we received additional reports that day of even more migrants colliding with buildings elsewhere in NYC. These are just a few of the 90,000-230,000 birds that die each year in NYC because of window collisions. - After constant documentation of bird deaths at this building by our Project Safe Flight volunteer @terencezahner, we repeatedly made attempts to share solutions with building management and the board. Regrettably. we have not yet received a response from them. - Starting in 2021, thanks to the passage of Int. 1482/Local Law 15, it will be illegal to make new buildings like Circa Central Park. This image is horrifying, but thankfully there are simple solutions to window collisions that can be found at abcbirds.org/get-involved/bird-smart-glass. NYC Audubon and our partners are dedicated to helping building owners use these solutions in order to prevent disasters like these from happening each spring and fall. - If you are a resident of Circa Central Park, or any building that is experiencing a high number of collisions, please reach out to Advocacy and Outreach Manager Molly Adams at madams@nycaudubon.org. - Birds collected by Ursula Mitra. Monday notes

A few brief notes for today on mostly quiet Monday.

On the Prospect peninsula thumb Ryan M reported nice selection of warblers including
blackburnian, baybreasted & canada.

Yesterday's Prothonotary was seen in the Lower pool. A Blue Grosbeak also reported but not detailed where.

Over at GreenWood.the magic tree beech on cypress and Vine intersection held far fewer numbers warblers with standouts Cape May, Nashville,&  a few Bay-breasteds according to Julian hough

Lawns are killers for birds, their insect food and wildlife.

Indiscriminate spraying for mosquitoes is actually killing the beneficial insects , everything gets wiped out.. (just like fish and sharks getting caught in those massive nets)

I very highly recommend people read entomologist and nature writer Douglas Tallamys book "Natures Best Hope" which talks heavy about lawns and stupid mindless spraying as one of the problems devastating insect populations and bird decline . Tallamy has been talking about this for many years..  even in the latest National Geographice latest issue is devoted to worldwide insect decline
