Good prognosticating: the Evening Grosbeaks come in

As I had mention last evening -- appropriately timed I found myself correctly calling for Evening Grosbeaks to arrive in numbers. A number of reports mentioned a borough wide presence of EVENING GROSBEAKS this morning. And there was no better place than hot year Greenwood Cemetery to see them ( tho I missed out).

After a single bird report  Evening Grosbeak flyover at Prospect Butterfly Meadow., the floodgates opened at Greenwood. Single bird reports generated in several locations until a sighting of a flock at Crescent Water. These grosbeaks took off soon after but several stuck around ,with a few visiting the Dell water feeders. Ryan M snapped some photos; hopefully I will post some for the blog.

Even without seeing the prized Evening Grosbeaks, the feeders are dynamic right now. Multiple PURPLE FINCHES alongside with PINE SISKINS ensued. There is even been rare MARSH WREN acting like a mouse in the grass by the feeders and LINCOLN SPARROW.But I was happy to see a RED-BREASTSED NUTHATCH showed up at one feeder.

Adding a bonus ,Russ A spotted a soaring BALD EAGLE over Crescent Water which most birders saw. So I wasn't disappointed despite getting up late not seeing any grosbeaks but if they stick around I'm bound to see one.

Winter Bird Feeding Tips
SNBU-HOLA-LALO for Facebook 2
Horned Larks, Snow Buntings, and Lapland Longspurs feeding on mixed seed scattered on the snow

With winter nipping at our heels, it's time to think about what food is best for birds in the colder months. Most of the time our feeders are more for our enjoyment than they are for helping birds. But during extreme cold snaps and persistent snow cover, bird feeders can make a big difference for small birds.

In our first Education & Outreach blog post,
the BSBO team brings you a few Winter Bird Feeding Tips
to help our feathered friends survive and thrive!

Birds at Home Virtual Learning Series
NEW PRESENTATIONS & WORKSHOPS!

All Birds at Home Virtual Learning Series Keynotes and Workshops are FREE for BSBO members and just $5.00 for nonmembers. Join BSBO HERE.  Each presentation is scheduled for 30-45 minutes with ample time for questions afterward. The presentations will take place through Zoom.

We've added WORKSHOPS to our Birds at Home Virtual Learning Series! With a focus on beginners, but a great refresher for any skill level, these workshops will cover bird identification, selecting and using optics, and some of our favorite bird families: Owls, Woodpeckers, Hummingbirds, Sparrows, and MORE!

The Mystery, Magic, and Majesty of Owls
Tuesday, November 10, 7:00 p.m. (EST)

Steeped in legend, symbols of wisdom, popularized by Harry Potter, and beloved by birders, owls have long captivated humans. In this fun and interactive workshop, the staff at Black Swamp Bird Observatory will provide a glimpse into the lives and habitats of these magnificent birds. We'll discuss identification, where, when, and how to look for owls, how to attract them to your yard, and how to observe them safely and responsibly.

Winter Finches: Understanding, Identifying, and Attracting these Nomads from the North
Tuesday, November 17, 7:00 p.m. (EST)
In certain years, birds referred to as "Winter Finches" leave their northern territories and move south, sometimes in big numbers. If the last few weeks are any indication, it looks like this could be one of those years! Internationally renowned bird expert, Kenn Kaufman, will help us better understand the lifestyles of feathered nomads like Pine Siskins, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Evening & Pine Grosbeaks, Redpolls, Purple Finches, and Crossbills. Kenn will share insight into why they're here in big numbers in some years and absent in others. He'll also provide some tips for identifying these wonderful birds. Kimberly Kaufman will join the conversation to share some tips for attracting winter finches to your feeders.

Optics 101: Purchasing, Adjusting, and Caring for Optics
Tuesday, December 8, 7:00 PM (EST)
While it's possible to enjoy birds without binoculars, having good optics can make all the difference in the world. Buying binoculars can be overwhelming and intimidating, but we can help! In this workshop, BSBO Outreach Coordinator, Jason Guerard, will cover all the basics to help you better understand this important bird observation tool, and help you know what to look for to find the binocular that's right for you!

Woodpeckers of the Midwest: Identifying and Attracting the Hammerheads with the Staff of BSBO
Tuesday, December 22, 7:00 p.m. (EST)

Observant, bold, and personable, woodpeckers are one of the first group of birds to enter our lives and inhabit our yards. Woodpeckers often begin our journey into bird identification with their recognizable shape and behavior, and their resident nature keeps them close to our homes for year-round observation (sometimes a little too close!) In this workshop we'll explore the woodpeckers that call the Midwest home, offering identification tips, clarification on some of those odd names, and ways to attract these charismatic birds to your yard. And if home repair isn't in your budget, we'll offer some advice for keeping these carpenters away from your siding!

BSBO STATEMENT ON STUDY PAINTING WIND TURBINE BLADE BLACK
download
recently released scientific paper based on work done in Norway seems to suggest that bird deaths at wind turbines can be significantly reduced by painting one of the three blades black and leaving the other two white/gray to make them more noticeable to birds in flight.

There has been a flurry of optimism over the study and its potential impact on the use of wind turbines as a renewable energy source.

We think this optimism is overstated, and would like to set the record straight.

Read full statement HERE.

Hi Peter,
Doug found the Common Gallinule, and it was great to see the bird! West side of Duck Island.
Charles

October surprises

As October draws near its end interesting sightings abound. The current sparrow fallout in Prospect was overshadowed by two water birds.

Doug Gochfeld found one a juvenile COMMON GALLINULE. Observed at the south shore of Duck Island,it hung along the shore infested with phragmites. It stayed throughout the day. Check the south ,southwest side of the Duck Island if it isn't out in the open.

A second water bird report occurred over the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. More marsh oriented, a five bird flock of GLOSSY IBISES flyover was observed by Dennis H and Kristin Costello.

On Prospect Lake ducks are back. Namely its the NORTHERN SHOVELER. I counted 32 birds,on the increase on the days to come for this dominant winter species. On an amusing note I watches a hen Bufflehead follow the HOODED MERGANSER pair towards 3 Sisters Islands.

Meanwhile on land, sparrows are it. Doug reported a large flock on the lawn between Lefrak Ice Rink and Duck Island shelter. Among 200 Birds a VESPER & LINCOLN Sparrow were found. In various patches mostly mug wort at South lake shore,Song , Swamp and dominant White throated is common.

Lefrak greenroof should be birded this time of year Karen Ohearn found among 5 warbler species a Nashville and late Yellow and Black throated Green Palm, yellow rumped filled the rest.

Greenwood migrationfallout jumping with woodcocks

A wind surge from the north produced citywide good stuff but for Greenwood cemetery excellent fallout of sparrow numbers and wood cocks.

Terrific numbers of American WOODCOCK marked the day in Greenwood. One birders report listed a conservative number of 14 ;Other birders exclaimed seeing ten along the Warrior Path! In any case any visiting birder was bound to see one in leafy that clutter.

The other big news was the huge numbers of sparrows ,namely juncos And chipping sparrows the big draw. By the Leonard Bernstein grave site 100s were reported. Other regular sparrows were present especially Song.

Then a few rare birds  also made news.A VESPER SPARROW; MARSH WREN in the Dellwater; 5 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS near the 35th street enttrance:and  a WILSONS SNIPE.

Good numbers of common and quality birds is interesting to note. According to a lister seeing 50+ HERMIT THRUSHES ,15 PURPLE FINCHES, and 25 TUFTED TITMICE should be eye openers

A good day at the cemetery ...for birds that is.

Hi Peter,
Another fantastic Fall day, with great weather and a surprising number of birds, still!
It's hard to believe we got 79 species again....same as last week.
The number is a bit higher as we had two groups, due to the group size restrictions.

Highlights: Orange-crowned Warbler, 7 species of raptors including a Bald Eagle seen by Karen, Rusty Blackbird, also Karen's group pre-merger..., 12 species of warblers including the OC and a Wilson's, a Bufflehead, thanks to Michele, and more.

Here's the list. I guess this is the last one for the Fall season, but we've got to consider doing more popup or regular walks as Winter arrives.

Best regards,
Tom

Quick walk through BBG on overcast day. Nice mix of finches, especially at northern end: siskins, goldfinch, purple finches, some bright males, all in good numbers. Were joined by yellow rumps, chipping and white-throated sparrows, cedar waxwings. Lots of activity and lots of food.

BBG open earlier for members on weekends at 9 am. Colors are beginning and few visitors

Carolyn Monastra Presents Climate Concerns

This meeting will take place via Zoom

Bio: A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Carolyn Monastra received her MFA in photography from The Yale School of Art. For the past twenty-five years her work has focused on creating and discovering mystery in the natural world. She has been awarded numerous artist residencies including at Ucross, Caldera Arts, The Djerassi Foundation, Blue Mountain Center, and The Saltonstall Foundation. A 2009 residency at the Skaftfell Visual Arts Center in Iceland inspired her to begin focusing on the critical issue of climate change in her artwork.

Talk Summary: Working at the intersection of art and ecology, artist and activist Carolyn Monastra has spent the past ten years focusing on one of the most critical issues of our time: climate change. She will present work from two projects: The Witness Tree (begun in 2010) and Divergence of Birds the latter of which was inspired by the Audubon Society's recent Climate Reports. She will discuss her different approaches to these two bodies of work and suggest direct actions everyone can take to combat the climate crisis and protect endangered wildlife.
