Early yellow rumps

 Two separate Yellow-rumped warblers were reported today in Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery,early birds for the date. Typically I would think late September is the time of arrival downstate for the species .

Who wants to see an accelerated migration ? 😆

Lily pool backwoods new trail

 The area between Center Drive and Lily Pool was weeded and restored in the initial stage by the Prospect Park Alliance Youth Crew

Included within the project is a brand new rustic railing trail that meanders along the shoreline of Lily Pool.

Look for the bridle trail for the trailheads.

Thanks to the youth of today for tomorrow's birders and woodland visitors.

Prospect fungus

 Found yesterday as I was fence repairing this fungus identifies by INaturalist as a Stereum genus.

On a side note earlier,Terry saw Worm eating Warbler in the Ravine.

Hurricane/ tropical storm warning

 Be safe stay home  or indoors Sunday.

It doesn't take alot of strong wind ( but gusts) to drop tree limbs,etc.

Bad news regarding an insect pest

Well ... they're here.

The dreaded SPOTTED LANTERNFLY was reported today in Greenwood Cemetery Dellwater area with multiples observed and squashed by a few friends. ( Yes..if u see them,kill it). GWC staff cut down the host tree Ailanthus but saplings left behind were attracting these bad bugs.

And today, singles were found by staff workers in Prospect Park. The insect preys and damages a number of tree species ( like our native Maples for one)

If you see them ( squash it)  ,send an email to Prospect Park Alliance. If u have my cell # or email address ,let me know. Make sure it's a lanternfly. ( And not any butterfly)

We are particularly interested in finding the eggs ( seen as a black mass ) on a tree,usually at the base.

- Comments: "Near the end of my watch, while scanning through the somewhat thinning out feeding flock of common terns and laughing gulls, I picked up a small bird among them that was immediately different - small and lightly built, with dark upper and under wings. I immediately suspected I had a black tern, but it quickly disappeared back into the fray. After phoning my friend who had just departed on the Manhattan bound ferry and asking them to keep their eyes open, I got back to scanning and after a few minutes, my bird appeared again, having about halved the distance between itself and myself, and it was indeed a black tern… dark wings and a partial black cap, with a bit of dark coloration bleeding into the flanks as well. As I watched it, a second one appeared, and I observed them wheel around and periodically evade marauding laughing gulls. They were still visible, albeit further away, when I left. While several common and Forster's terns exited the swarm and flew past the end of the pier as I observed, the black terns remained out towards the rusty barges north of the pier and towards Manhattan."

- Comments: "Spotted at dusk during a rainstorm. Bird was tiny, bobbing it's tail while foraging through puddles along a path adjacent to the Lullwater. Seen with no bins (aargh!) in fading light, I was unable to spot pink legs.  GISS… less streaking and a broader supercilium, overall whiter breast and flanks, hence LOWA and not Northern."

- Comments: "**rare, especially in the 5 boroughs, but increasing - probably the bird that's been hanging around Newark Bay since last Oct. Slender Sulid, appearing smaller than a gannet. Long, thin, very pointed wings, fairly long, tapered tail, large projecting head with long, pale, pointed bill. Solid dark brown upperparts, head, and breast with sharply demarcated white belly. Moving quickly toward Brooklyn waterfront, heading vaguely NE. Flap-and-glide flight style, wingbeats deep but quick, almost jaeger-like. Seen from Staten Island Ferry. Photos tba"

Nyc harbor Brown Booby

Yes you read that right.

This afternoon an observer from the Staten Island Ferry reported seeing an adult BROWN BOOBY flying east towards Brooklyn in the general area of Bush Terminal park..

If confirmed,its a mega rarity. Staking out Bay ridge pier towards Red hook might be the best strategy.. Good luck
