Chanukah greetings

Happy Chanukah to readers and birders of the Jewish faith!

Monday's summary in prospect

Just as some snow flurries were observed today noontime, likewise a species with the namesake shows up . On a personal note it was good to see some interesting birds.

This midmorning ,birders spotted a single Snow Goose along prospect lake west shore. Hanging out with a few Canada geese, I failed to find it after my lunch hour. There might have been a small flock of 5 " different " flyover geese according to an observer that produced the snow goose.

On a personal note I finally got to see one of three tardy warblers of Well Drive: American Restart. The adult male hyper actively moved up slope from the shipping containers.

At the feeders where I was joined by Kathy and Bob, two Yellow bellied sapsuckers capped our list. Thanks to Kathy spotting, both male sapsuckers played "tag" on the big tree behind the feeders. A Fox Sparrow joined in with at least 8 Red winged blackbirds devouring seed.

On a side note, well drive spots continue to be go-to spots. Cooper's hawk, 2 purple finches and red tailed hawk were seen by the picnic tables.

Friday non shop birding

Black Friday is known as the biggest shopping day of the year. I prefer to bird. Its so much better to do rather than get caught up in the shopping craze.Regardless how my walk goes its the moments that count.

One of those moments of my mid afternoon walk took place south of West Island. Two ducks popped into view off the tip of the island. They were drake Ring necked Ducks, typically found in these cramped areas like coves and inlets or next to islands. They are cool looking ducks without any flashy plumages but I adore them.

A lone chilly walk around the lake without anything special led me to the feeders. And immediately upon arrival, I spotted a Fox Sparrow below the newest feeder. The bird was double clutching the leaves. I'm glad to get my first one of the season.

A few moments later,I see another gorgeous bird ,the Carolina Wren feeding on the suet. Its reddish color and ochre tinted breast contrasts sharply with the gloominess of the day.

These moments are worth being in the outdoors most rewarding anytime than in any retail mall.

Pre big feast Wednesdays good birding

This day before Thanksgiving turns out to be a good one. Wednesday wonders included late warblers Wilson's and Canada, feeder Purple Finch and the continuing AMERICAN BITTERN.

Just south of Nethermead 3 arches bridge above the steps, a gorgeous male CANADA WARBLER stuck around for a half hour at the lawn woods edge where a lawn is being restored ,protected by a mesh fence. The bird eventually flew to the Binnen Creek after 5 birders watched it.

The long continuing Wilsons warbler still visits the Well Drive 3 containers.

During her Wilson's  observation, Terri who for her good charity donating bird seed money lucked in seeing the AMERICAN BITTERN fly across prospect lake towards the south shore. It's good to see this rare heron stick around .

And last, with the feeders barely up, within the hour start a PURPLE FINCH female delighted birders with its stage the platform feeder. And that's good news if it can call in more winter finches.

Prospect feeders season begins

The annual winter feeders are up on this first day in Prospect, in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

First a shout-out of thanks to the Brooklyn Bird Club and president Dennis for donating the cost of the first seed stock $136.

Then first individual gifts in the field from Terri with $40 and Charles Tang $15.

The feeders are contingent upon donations to keep feeding the birds and provide moments of joy . Let me know if you like to donate cash or seed /or suet depending on current space storage. Contact me first.

The first good bird of female Purple Finch within the hour of installation is a good omen for the upcoming season.

Enjoy watching !

Prospect Northern Pintail records

There are over 25 records ( if I group sporadic sightings in same season) since October 22,1938. The highest number was 4 seen February 3rd 2010.

The last different Pintail sighting occured Dec 19,2017.

The bird seen today is very likely the one seen two weeks ago on Oct 26th.

Nice to see it stick around..

eBird Checklist - 12 Nov 2021 - Prospect Park--Prospect Lake - 16 species Inc Pintail duck

https://ebird.org/checklist/S97488793

Contentment is achieved when I get a nice bird on a late walk. At my age it's no longer trying for numbers or rarities but simply giving in to nature's whims.

At my stationary vantage at west shore rustic shelter, there's no better place viewing the lake with late afternoon sun at my back. Colorful  Peninsula trees ablaze by the sun, it was an odd looking distant duck that caught my fancy along that shore, wading with two Double crested cormorants. I thought by it weird complexion and skinny neck it was maybe a Red breasted Merganser. I eventually lost sight of it with my cheap scope without a definitive answer.

About ten minutes later, I caught sight of this flying odd duck as it landed on the southwest corner waters. This time I quickly got on it and patiently watched it glide into west island cove. And that's how in good light and better views, I could identify it as a hen NORTHERN PINTAIL DUCK.

A good one for the park, uncommon in my opinion. In the past two weeks maybe three we had nice duck diversity since the surf scoter sighting. ( If you like Wood Ducks, check them out at West and also Duck Islands)

Northwest wind

Tomorrow is northwest wind day.. tho we are way past the migration peak, it's good to check the skies for raptors, waters for incoming ducks and arrivals, and who knows maybe some western or rare bird lurking around.

The bottom line? You can't know until you go look for it.

Big star the Bittern

Today's big star in Prospect Park was the continuing AMERICAN BITTERN.

First reported to me this morning of this bittern at the phragmite marsh across from the Wellhouse,it supposedly put on a nice display. From ebird reports filed by multiple observers, I gathered it stuck long there at that spot; but at some time it climbed upward into the tree(s). See Charles Tangs photo as well as a video clip I posted earlier today.

At some point late morning the Bittern flew out to reside in the phragmite marsh opposite the Well Drive 3 Shipping containers. More details emerged that it was seen well enough there even observed eating a fish.

Late this afternoon , while the Bittern gets all the attention, a hen COMMON MERGANSER made a landing in the lake as reported by Richard P.
