Early spring prospects

During this transitory time, a few typical species get noted.

Terry Kim reported Laughing Gull this afternoon , on Prospect Lake. We usually see this species by April first.

And reported by Kathy T passing outside my home , a Rusty Blackbird was seen at the Ravine Creek near Rocky Pass . Kathy mentions three Common Mergansers, two drakes and a hen, continuing this species long stay on the lake since January.

PP lake common merganser long stay

--A quick check of the ebird records for the species shows that the first appearance was Jan 24th this year, Since then, almost every day this species with at least one residential hen mostly early on , joined by others later,, stayed till March 27th. Over two months counted.

Thats a very long time for the park.

GWC Snipe

Greenwood Cemetery saw its first spring season Wilson's Snipe this morning.

A quick flying snipe first reported at Sylvan Water was refound at Dellwater a short time later. This is peak period into early April when these secluded birds are found,so well camouflaged. Sometimes birders get lucky with a out in the open feeding bird.

Spring starts at 1133 am tomorrow and what's a welcome sight than bright Pine Warblers? One was found at Fort Greene Park today, singing as typically males do.

Woodcock weekend warrior

I was a weekend warrior- for a mere two hours- in Greenwood Cemetery Sunday. After yesterday's washout and the workweek ahead, today was my best chance for a woodcock sighting in the afternoon.

Dennis H's Brooklyn Bird club walk this morning targeting woodcocks helped. He replies to my text of seeing six tomberdoodles. So that was that.

At two this afternoon I entered the Cemetery's Fort Hamilton entrance. For the next hour I was luckless flushing any doodle. I did see two gorgeous Fox Sparrows and some juncos showing nice contrast.

Taking a hunch a spot that bore reliability in the past, the Warrior Path had paid off in timberdoodle timing. And I was lucky and right! At the bottom of the slope by the path,a quick brownish whiff and I knew it had to be a woodcock; on my slow approach towards some broken pine ground branches where I suspected it landed, it again took off with no visibility for me to see its next landing spot.

Searching again with scanning the ground my best tactic, I figured it landed in undergrowth or shrub edging. Again scanning a spot, I got my boid! Approaching  double old headstones, my blind enabled me to see the hidden woodcock well. Happiness is mine.

The old headstone served as a good prop for my  45 degree binoculars to allow me to take "binphotos " with my cellphone. The photo isn't great but  I inserted a star; look right above in the shaded spot you can see the resting woodcock.

150 feet ahead from double stone is the AMWO.

Hi Peter,

Here are two photos from today of the Canvasback on the lake.

Erik& Terry

Timberdoodle fallout at Greenwood, a canvasback comes in at prospect.

Greenwood cemetery experienced a fallout of woodcocks today with a reported 24 tallied by Ryan M. Another birder told me that they were scattered in numerous places throughout the cemetery. This is a great time to go this week to look for these tomberdoodles.

Meanwhile while meeting with a new birder to discuss birders fascination with Prospect and its lake, I received word from Eric passing by that a drake Canvasback was reported in the lake just east of Three Sisters Islands. And sure enough ,sleeping with a small flock of Ruddy ducks, there's a Canvasback. An awesome find for this rare park species-- the first since February of 2017 -- this Canvasback eventually woke from its slumber and started diving at 440 pm. Next to it at one point a hen Hooded Merganser glides by.

Speaking of mergansers, three or two Common Mergansers kept to the middle of the lake, one a drake. A Ring-necked Duck was spotted as well, last seen by Three Sisters islands.

A great Sunday all around !
