Louie in town

Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motacilla) (1)
- Reported Jul 31, 2022 08:23 by Forrest Wickman
- Prospect Park, Kings, New York

- Comments: "Back of Lily Pond. Early/dispersing? Photos. A possible Louisiana was reported by Linda Ewing in the same general area yesterday. Northern Waterthrushes seem to be more common at this time of year (and I had a Northern by the Lullwater), and I'm by no means some sort of Waterthrush Expert, but the strong tail end of the white supercilium, esp. when combined with the apparent lack of spots on the (white, as opposed to yellow) throat, suggests Louisiana."

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S115795434
- Media: 4 Photos
- Comments: "Slightly early but typically expected in the area in late July. Detected around the pier 1 long pond by its deep, hollow chip. Seen on the small mudflat a short while after. White supercilium, while not flaring towards the rear, extended to the upper back and did not taper. Dull pink legs. Thick, sparse breast streaking, but mostly unstreaked throat."

Monarch butterfly species on endangered list

From Charly Harper Facebook page

We just heard the devastating news that monarch butterflies have been officially placed on the endangered species list because of their fast-dwindling numbers. It's hard to believe (and digest) all of the human-driven destruction of this lovely planet that has occurred in my relatively short lifetime alone. Charley too felt the ache in his heart and wrote, spoke, and painted about this devastation throughout his lifetime.

If you feel called to join the fight to save these beauties, here are some things you can do:

*Remove non-native plants from your land - and plant natives! Check out https://www.xerces.org/pollinator-resource-center for pollinator conservation resource, (or google your location + native plants for local orgs and sources)!

*PLANT MILKWEED native to your region (and cut back when called for based on location). Use The Xerces Society Milkweed Finder (https://www.xerces.org/milkweed/milkweed-seed-finder). It's not too late to plant!

*Plant nectar plants (asters, goldenrods, etc) for their fall trip home

*STOP using insecticides and pesticides

*Look out for Black Swallow-Wort. It's an invasive plant with flowers that are very attractive to monarch butterflies, who lay their eggs on it, but it's toxic & kills the eggs. If you want to help monarch butterflies, kill all the black swallow-wort you see. https://www.somervillema.gov/sites/default/files/identifying-and-removing-black-swallow-wort.pdf

*Use the app iNaturalist! It's a community-based scientific tool that allows people to study insect populations, such as the Monarch, by using the data collected by community members using the app. You can submit observations of plants, animals and insects.  Having this date is invaluable in determining where conservation projects can be most beneficial and where Monarchs are (and are not).

*Support legislation and leaders that put conservation and protection over profit

(Pictured here is Charley's "Blue Skies and Butterflies". So bittersweet today)

1st fall migration Louisiana waterthrush ,at BBrP

Louisiana Waterthrush (Parkesia motacilla) (1)
- Reported Jul 20, 2022 19:35 by Doug Gochfeld
- Brooklyn Bridge Park, Kings, New York
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=40.6996104,-73.9973745&ll=40.6996104,-73.9973745
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S115456189
- Comments: "**Scarce southbound migrant in NYC, though some scarcity may be attributed to its relatively early fall migration through this area, when birder coverage in appropriate wooded habitats is low. Detected because it was giving contact calls at dusk, and after that I had two brief sightings. Then it gave another bout of loud calling. Eastern edge if Pier 1, around the shaded pond along the main path, viewed from the small footbridge directly on the south side of that pond. No camera, but two audio recordings."

Birthday greetings

Looking back in time

An exception here with today's post of the Webb Telescope first image. An image or section of the sky the size of a grain of sand at arms length, the light seen in the photo took 4.6 billion years to reach Earth ,which was only being born when light left those galaxies. ( each with billions of stars)

Its the farthest back in time we've seen.

Mind blowing!

"Powerful Jersey Journal editorial on Senator Brian P. Stack crucial protection bill for LSP's Caven Point Natural Area -and urging no backroom deals in legislature. Governor Phil Murphy -this is another true colors test for you after you failed to support the LSP Protection Act!  Will you support protecting this natural urban treasure for people & wildlife & finally say NO to Paul Fireman and his paid or bought off surrogates' lies about LSP?

Interested in planting wildflowers in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge? Join us and the American Littoral Society - Northeast Chapter in front of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center at 10am on Thursday, July 7. The planting will take place on sandy soil, and should be fairly dry.

What to wear:
Bring a hat, water, closed toed shoes, and, if comfortable, long pants. It gets a little warm on the planting spot, so dress for sun and sand.
We will provide trowels, gloves, and a water jug, so we encourage you to bring a refillable bottle. Rules of the refuge for any personal trash is carry in carry out!
