In memoriam Elyse Shiller Taylor

I was  informed by a friend that a frequent Prospect birder from years past Elyse Shiller Taylor passed away in early winter.

I'm posting this note as many of the older generation of birders likely knew her from run-ins in Prospect Park.

I remembered Elyse as a pretty knowledgeable birder as well as a very gracious lady always friendly.

May she rest peacefully. 💮🌹

It stood out as an Iceland/Glaucous candidate. My camera battery died while attempting my first shots, as the bird was directly overhead. I managed a few photos as it departed, flying west over the 20th street edge of green-wood. It was possibly leaving prospect park or sheepshead bay, heading in the direction of South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. Big thanks to my birder friends for ID help! Adult Iceland Gull: near-white under wings and tips, pale-gray back with white trailing edge. Image."

Windy day report for Prospect Park

Among the multitude of reports I read online Ebird here are top birds flagged:

The best and most cooperative hilight is a hen Common Merganser hanging out at the east section of Prospect Lake near the Peninsula thumb and point.

Turkey Vultures are passing overhead, a few seen above the Boathouse.

And the Orange crowned Warbler continues its amazingly long stay at Lefrak Rink roof at the south end by the Holly Trees or in them between the path and smokestacks.

Prospect Park on the first day

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L109516

Prospects New year began with 1/4 on the way to 200 for the year with 51 bird species today. Of course it helps with many birders out looking getting a head start.

The highlight is a first winter Iceland Gull off the Hammerhead peninsula in southwest corner of Prospect Lake. The rare gull was discovered by birding maestro Dale Dyer.

The variety otherwise includes some uncommon birds . These species were Wood Ducks in Lullwater Cove, Winter Wren,Bald Eagle, Purple Finch, Bufflehead, Brown creeper ,both kinglet species and more.

Though I'm not into the first day rush birding, nevertheless I was blessed with my first good bird of 2024. Just about entering my church for morning services at Fort Hamilton Parkway, I looked up at the high cross steeple and noticed a perched Peregrine falcon .I've been told it was there all morning. Pretty darn cool to see it picked my church. 🤗

Onward 2024! 🐦🦅🦉🦆🐧
