A hot Michael S: two megararities over Greenwood Cemetery

Michael S is on a fiery streak.

A day ago Michael spots high up over the northwest section an interesting raptor. Following through studying his long distance photo and consulting with other experts it turn out the raptor was a SWAINSONS HAWK. This is the second year in a row he found such a bird. More to follow on this individual bird.

Then today at 1:10, Michael does it again. This time over the Hill of Graves he spotted 7 SANDHILL CRANES! Getting a timely  what app tweet out, Rob J rushes out to his fire escape in Park slope and spots the crane flock, skirting in low altitude along the edge of Prospect Park where a third report mentions the flock climbing higher in the Grand Army army Plaza area.

Getting back to the the SWAINSONS, it turns out as Michael presumed , this bird descended into the Sims Recycling plant in Sunset Park coastal area at 29th st and 2nd ave.its no doubt the same bird returning from last year.

Go figure. Congrats to Michael S for his incredible luck and good eyes.

Here's an Ebird from Jeff Gramm regarding SWAINSONS.

Saturdays sightings

Prospect Park enjoyed a gorgeous day late morning with several good sightings.

The Rufous Hummingbird continues its impressive run at the bottom of Breeze Hill . look for the feeder at the hairpin path turn where it's hanging out on that south slope.

Two Common Mergansers grace Prospect Lake ,a mixed pair. I was fortunate seeing the beautiful drake near Wes Island where I also was lucky seeing a drake Ring necked Duck and a wood duck pair ,both hopping up on the stone edge.

Bald eagle continue their flyovers, one seen today.

The Orange crowned Warbler also impresses with its very long stay at Lefrak Rink environs.

Pretty soon, stuff will come thru as March beckons, my having seen Ruby crowned kinglet at Well Drive picnic tables site.

On a side note, the Iceland Gull continues at Bush Terminal pier park today.

Prospect feeders

There may be 2 weeks tops left for the feeders as seed is diminishing ( 1 1/2 bags) after todays refill. The feeding season hasn't been great this past winter, hence the season will end a week earlier than usual.  No finches because the thistle sock that you see has been the same one since November!

An off very off year this winter.

Leader Tina Alleva

Hi Peter,

We had about 10 participants on this frigid morning for the Great Backyard Bird Count. Due to the overnight freeze, which made some areas slippery, we opted for safety and stayed on the main roads and clear paths, which limited the areas we could access.
As people arrived, Angie Co spotted an adult Bald Eagle soaring over the lullwater, likely the same one frequently observed in the park. After about two hours, the cold prompted us to conclude a bit earlier than planned. However, as we were leaving, we received news that the Rufous Hummingbird had reappeared. A few of us that were left were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of it before departing.

Here is our checklist:

Hi, Peter,

Great to cross paths with you this afternoon. Here's my best photo of Rufus:

yours,

Sunday hilights summary

Sunday was a very good winter day. With chilly weather under bright sun, birding couldn't be better . Here were the hilights.

The mega RUFOUS Hummingbird continues its remarkable resilience. It's a survivor and a showboat. It continues to visit the sugar water feeder near the hairpin turn at Breeze Hills south slope. I was able to see it in the midafternoon with two Hummer visits at that feeder brightly lit by the setting sun. I couldn't along with other birders ask for a better close look.

Second hilight regards an Iceland Gull at Bush terminal pier park. Always beat in winter as a full spot, Bush pulled in a juvenile Iceland, seen on a pier north of the osprey platform.

Bald Eagles were seen flying over both Prospect and Greenwood Cemetery. On the latter, a good sighting over Valley Water wowed birders there. Two were at least seen above Prospect Lake.

Prospect feeders was better for me today than yesterday. At least I observed 8 Cardinals and the always delightful Carolina Wren picking at the suet.

Winter may not have many birds but good species abound.

The Great Backyard experience 17 Feb 2024 - Prospect Park--Prospect Lake - 16 species (+1 other taxa)

https://ebird.org/checklist/S161876543

I would've felt guilty not submitting at least one Great Backyard count tally during the four day festival. So with great willpower after a hard work week, a few hours in Prospect would suffice. And personally it was a good one.

First scan from West Island netted me the usual waterfowl but Wood Duck I found turned out to be a highlight. I counted overall a dozen; Forrest who swung by said he counted 14! Then I saw to my left out in the lake middle a smallish dark backed Gull ; so  I headed over to the rustic shelter.

It turned out my hunch was right. The dark backed Gull was an adult non breeding Lesser Black Back Gull, seen bathing quite abit. Unfortunately it didn't stay long as a few birders came by motivated by my tweet. Eventually ,  I found the long staying hen Common Merganser. Speaking of Merganser, the handsome Hoodeds are frequenting the southwest shoreline,3 drakes and likewise 3 hens within 3 Sisters Islands.I witnessed interesting behavior with the hens: they were eating snow off a branch sticking out of the water!

Two Pied Billed Grebes mingled near the dwindling Northern Shoveler flock. Grebe's are usually uncommon in winter here on the lake.

After that ,my best sighting happened to be a flash. Taking a photo of a snow scene from Terrace Bridge, I spotted a low flying juvenile Bald Eagle heading towards the Rink. It must've come off the big hill. With the feeders unremarkably quiet- it's been like that all winter- and negative reports of the Rufous Hummingbird - hopefully it survived the storm-it was on ward home for me , feeling hungry and experiencing cold fingers.

At least I did my part being a citizen scientist for a few but fulfilling hours.🌨️❄️☃️🦆🦅

First spotted while head-tucked more or less in aspect of photo #2, when most easily located by blood-red legs. In winter, in the absence of Laughing Gulls, this dark coral red leg color is probably unique among gulls likely to be seen in our area; the most similar but much smaller species, Bonaparte's Gull, typically shows pale pink legs. Leg color is one of the easier ways to spot this gull in large groups of standing, resting gulls. Once this bird lifted its head the dull dark red bill was visible."

Rufous is a survivor!!

The Rufous hummingbird survived yesterdays storm giving hope for more birders to see it.

It favors a large honeysuckle bush next to a yew at the top of the hill directly above the hairpin turn of the descending south face Breeze Hill path. The honeysuckle flowers are its lifesaving nutrient.

- Comments: "Continuing even after the blizzard, which is perhaps not surprising from the only hummingbird species known to regularly breed in Alaska. In its favorite clump of honeysuckle next to the yew, just uphill from the hummingbird feeder. Not visible (and I don't think audible) on me and Josh M's first pass through, but when I returned I heard it within a minute or two, then quickly spotted it and snapped a few photos. No one seems to know where it goes, and/or how long it rests, when it's not being seen (perhaps especially in the afternoon), but it seems like it can be seen anywhere along this (lake) side of Breeze Hill in the mornings. Photos are crappy because I was walking the dog but it's not like there are other hummingbirds around. Coordinates: 40.6584162, -73.9664328."

Mega RUHU report

https://ebird.org/checklist/S161365294

With multiple observers and so many reports here's the gist of it regarding Prospects Rufous Hummingbird.

If one continues down the descending path  at Terrace Bridge towards the Rink, flowering Honeysuckle Bushes is attracting this mega rarity-Kings county's first.Look for the bird about midslope but more likely near the hairpin turn at the bottom of the hill.

This morning I along with many others at the hairpin turn, observed the Hummer hanging around a large honeysuckle at the top of the slope. More Honeysuckle resides on a path above from the parking lot southeast access path if you don't find it or along the shoreline by the bollards. Good luck.

In other news, the winter long Orange crowned warbler was spotted at the rink's southeast area or in evergreens by there I presumed along the path to the greenroof. It had been frequenting habitat next to the Summerhouse Gazebo ( Duck island)

On the lake , the hen Common Merganser sticks around near Three Sisters while wood ducks hang out at Duck island and a Hooded Merganser by West island.
