Ring-neckeds and Mergs

Highlights of todays Prospect observances are ring-neckeds and Mergs.

Running into a friend on Well Drive on my way back to my office, I heard a report of 6 Ring-necked Ducks at  Ducks Island. Then afterwards I ran into two more friends who mentioned they had 6 more in the Upper Pool. A dozen Ringnecks is a pretty cool number.

Of course as it has been the past 2 weeks, Common Mergansers dominate the news at Prospect Lake.  4 are still being reported .

Its that time of year.

Around the nabe

In prospect of interest is a small flock of European goldfinches hanging out along Well Dr near the picnic tables towards the well house. At the latter , an American Tree Sparrow was spotted . The lake still provides looks of common mergansers.

Over at greenwood cemetery , the Swanson Hawk flew near Valley Water. Redheaded Woodpecker as usual resides at Hemlock and Battle Ave intersection area ( Battle hill)

Gone for a walk

I decided with the  late afternoon fading to go for a walk in prospect park. And it turned out in a short span of time pretty well . I saw stuff that makes a walk worthwhile .

First stop at the hammerhead section of a lake view, I saw 3 hen Ring-necked ducks in front of three sisters islands. This sighting along with shovelers and near my walk conclusion when I spotted two drake Comon Mergansers added up to 16 duck species over two days after my bbc club walk of southern Brooklyn spots yesterday. Winter means ducks and that's a grand reason for enjoying them in their best plumage.

Around the lake ,I get word that the bald eagle has been spotted on south lookout. I found that eagle from the mid slope path above the well house , perched high .It was also seen from well house drive farther down but the view is unimpeded of branches higher up on that path.

A nice walk and most importantly getting out is a cure for Sunday laziness.🦅

Swainson's hawk at Sims recycling facility (2nd Ave & 29th Street, Brooklyn, behind the Metropolitan Dentention Center), at 2 pm 2/23/25.  Look just below the roofline of the left side of the building in the back.  The bird has a belly band, and also the distinctive white patch below the beak and dark stripes on the sides of its face.  Thanks to birders Matt & Valerie for confirming the ID.

A fine afternoon at the lake

I had to refill the feeders after a long spell absent. But passing by the lake on the way back proved very fortuitous. I found myself some good ducks and nice numbers too.

Originally, my first spot were two drake Common Mergansers in the lake middle. But after running into my friend Donna on the west shore, that number increased to six. When I got home ,reading Ebird alert reports, I read someone  today had 11 Common mergansers, a darn good number for prospect.

Theres more. 6 Hooded Mergansers also occupied the lake and an equal number of Ring necked Ducks stayed by West Island ice edge.

Well it's that time of year as February draws to its end.

Now sporting stunning adult plumage, with a bright white nose-bridge and a well-defined dark bib. Characteristic long, lance-like primaries projecting beyond the tail, giving this bird a falcon-like silhouette. Perched on its former haunt at the top of the Sims Recycling building, looking equal parts majestic and incongruous in the heavy snow. Very nice to reunite with this old friend, which was a life bird for me when I first saw this individual on Staten Island in January 2023 and became the first Brooklyn record when it was relocated this side of the Hudson by Michael. Almost unprecedented in the northeast as an overwinterer, and even more unusual for an adult, which led me to believe this individual and the adult Swainson’s hawk wintering in Ipswich Massachusetts are one in same, but the Ipswich bird continues today. Seen from the entrance to the Sims substation at 29th street and Second Ave. Do not go through the second gate, by the Fresh Direct crossdock. Snowy photos"

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S212712120
- Comments: "**very rare. Apparent Short-billed Gull, but perhaps cannot definitively rule out Common Gull. Adult floating in the marina amidst Ring-billed Gulls for a few minutes from 17:35-17:42 or so, before I lost track of it. Small yellowish (light was failing) bill with some dark smudging towards the tip, smudgy streaking on the nape, neck, and head, giving a heavily cowled appearance. Apparently dark eye, but difficult to discern given light and distance. Mantle color significantly darker gray than the surrounding RBGUs, with a very broad white tertial crescent. Short-billed seems most likely based on extensively smudgy head pattern, apparently small bill (though there is overlap with Common), and darkness of mantle. It lines up well with the individual recently seen in Central Park (which has been identified as Short-billed via primary pattern), but with these views, there's no way to be sure of that. Low quality photos, and some digiscoped video."
