Brown Pelican incursion

With an invasion of pelicans reported on the south Brooklyn coast the past month, it's impossible to get them up  into northern Brooklyn. Of course , you need coastal views .

Today that happened:Gabriel Willow found 10 flyby in NY harbor from his Bush Terminal Park, the pellys flying south . So if you happen to be along shore parkway in Sunset Park towards Bay ridge and Gravesend ,you might luck in...

Around the nabe

In Prospect park , especially the lake, an adult Bald Eagle perched on the Hammerhead, the southwest corner while a late Laughing Gull sat in the lake.

Over in Brooklyn botanic garden, an uncommon American Tree Sparrow appeared with juncos outside the native flora section, adjoining the Rose Garden.

Devout( or devour?) Catholics ? 😆

Both Peregrines perched on my Catholic church cross.. looks like a Preying duo . 🙏🤗

It's a regular perch for Peregrines and red tailed hawks..

Pretty cool and happy they picked my church...

I hustled over and got to watch them chomp down on those seeds for a few minutes, before they flew back to the Quaker Cemetery, making their way gradually east along Center Dr, where we finally lost them. Wouldn't be surprised if they return back to that original tree tho. Photos."

Garden tip

Winter is a tough time for birds. With insects and berries gone, they rely on native plants for food.

Goldfinches love dried coneflower heads, while juncos and sparrows dig for goldenrod seeds under the snow. Chickadees search native grasses for leftovers.

Cleaning gardens too early removes crucial winter food sources. Leaving dried plants can help keep our feathered friends alive! 🐦❤️🌾

I'd been scanning the gulls from the west side of the lake for about half an hour with nothing but RBGU and AHGU and decided to make my way back towards Nethermead. Took one last glance at the gulls from the north side and noticed a possible LBBG candidate. Snapped some distant photos that revealed just a dark-mantled AHGU, but in the background of the photo was a blurry blob resembling a small Chroicocephalus gull. I ran back around towards SW side of lake and got a better look of the bird, its red bill, and black patch behind ear. The bird sat and bathed on lake for a bit until a pair of RTHA came in and terrorized the gull flock. I last saw the bird circling high over the lake, slowly heading south out of the park. Hopefully it returns!"

My golden year concludes

In a fun way to celebrate my golden anniversary this year, pursuing  bird species with "gold" in their names, I set out to find 8 of them on Brooklyn Bird Club theme walks. Yesterday's walk for American Goldfinch was the last one and it ended well. I got the boid.

The day didn't look good due to the rain. Nevertheless, I had faith I'll find my goldfinch. With three of us in happy pursuit, it was Sameer who hit paydirt. When we arrived at the Esdale Bridge, Sameer heard the species.Well ,at least we have it. It was only moments later, Sameer spotted them--20 of them! The flock was feeding right above us ,on birch seeds just before the Rocky Pass fork juncture.

I'm indebted  to owning Sameer a beer now one of these days in gratitude .

Of my 8 happy pursuits beginning in January , I achieved 4 successful ventures. That means as my friend Ryan puts it: I'm batting .500 -- better than Ted Williams!

Here were the year's discoveries: Common Goldeneye in February at Floyd Bennett; Golden crowned kinglet in March at Prospect Park; Golden Swamp Warbler (the old name for Prothonotary Warbler ) on the May overnight to NJ Michael Huber Prairie Woods Preserve; and yesterday's American Goldfinch.

The misses :January's Barrow Goldeneye ( That i missed by one location ,the trip shortened and called due to high winds on LI north shore); Golden winged Warbler in Sterling Forest; American Golden Plover at the NJ sod farms and Golden Eagle on the overnight Hawk Mountain last month.

Nature plays her own cards, we're at her mercy. It's lucky I found 4 species! Nevertheless,  despite the misses we found other good birds on these trips. For example: Red headed woodpecker at Sunken meadow state Park and last month's  Mega rarity Lecontes Sparrow in Alpha Grasslands in the least  likely locale I was only going to spent "no more than 20 minutes". That's the beauty of nature.

So, I'm going to take this Golden opportunity to thank everyone for helping me get my targets-- seen or missed --and i had a ball of it looking for them. It was indeed a celebration of birding and the people who took part in those trips and walks.. Now I'm looking forward to my 100th year birds in the future. Stick around!🐦🦅🦉🦩🦃🪶🦚

- Comments: "Went back and forth a bit on this bird -- it popped out super obviously as smaller than the others when this flock flew by in front me westbound, giving prolonged views. Shorter neck also stood out. Looking at photos, the head looks blockier/squarish, forehead to bill angle looks steeper, and white cheek patch seems to curl up around the eye more like a Cackling. Bill doesn't quite look "stubby" enough, which gives me pause, but it is clearly shorter when I compare to the birds on either side. Body also looks smaller. I am open to revising this back to a slash or other, though!

We believe access to nature is a fundamental right.

The Natural Areas Conservancy celebrated the completion of New York City's 250-mile trail network in June.

With volunteers, community members, and partners, we:

🗺️ Installed 10,000 blazes to aid wayfinding

🔨 Built 59 trail structures to improve safety and accessibility

🤝 Engaged 600 volunteers who logged over 3,100 hours to boost forest health

💡 Launched a campaign to improve awareness of NYC's nature trails

Thank you for being a part of this journey. See you on the trails!
