Eco tip. Brushpiles

🪵 Build a Brush Pile That Becomes a Winter Shelter
A simple pile of sticks and branches can become one of the most valuable habitats in your garden.

How to build it:
• Stack larger logs or branches at the base for air gaps.
• Add medium twigs and smaller sticks on top.
• Fill gaps with leaves, bark, and straw.
• Place it in a quiet, shaded corner.

Who moves in:
• Wrens, robins, and sparrows find shelter from wind and snow.
• Toads, frogs, and small mammals overwinter safely inside.
• Beetles and pollinators use the decaying wood for nesting.

✨ Leave it undisturbed through winter. By spring, it becomes a thriving mini-ecosystem that recycles nutrients and supports wildlife.

Last BBC walk of fall season

Led by Dennis

Its a Lark in prospect plus more

This mornings highlight in prospect park found by Alex on the BBC walk was Lark Sparrow, within a large sparrow flock on the Hammerhead at southwest Prospect Lake. It was quite the cool discovery that a mob of birders saw it.

Late warblers are present with Ovenbird, American Redstarts, Canada and Bay breasted good sightings. Even a White eyed video had to plug in.

Continuing with rare sparrows, the sparrow bowl by the picnic house hosted a Vesper Sparrow.

Two Rusty Blackbirds perched atop the leaning white pine at southwest Nethermead is a nice find

Meanwhile at Bush Terminal Pier park, a yellow billed cuckoo was reported in the North woods.

That's the summary for today.

My sparrow search

Having not devoted much time lately birding due to busy work schedule and leaf peeping vacation, my day off today was to focus on catch-up and sparrows. But prospect is my office and I wished not going there today. So it was onward to Greenwood Cemetery because I didn't want to drive to Floyd Bennett.

I took the train because only the cemetery entrance at 5th ( and 4th ) Avenues are open weekdays. But that's fine since the best sparrow habitat is around the cathedral. After a fruitless Janet's Meadow search, I sauntered along Sycamore Avenue, at the native habitat east of the cathedral.

I had a target bird since I no longer focus on numbers. And I achieved that with the White crowned sparrow that first landed on that avenue before hopping to the lawn in front of one of the crypts. It was a juvenile and I was happy with that; but sometimes you get a bonus bird. And that happened to be a Lincoln Sparrow right behind the white crowned ! Its a beauty because it has that subtle gray face combined with the buffy streaked breast. I was delighted .

After that with the numerous white throated sparrows and songs, I spotted juncos a few chipping and palm warblers as I endeavored up landscape Ave into Sylvan Water. On the latter I was happy to see all the newly planted wildflowers along the shoreline. Its going to be spectacular here next year.

By now it was getting warmer and after the quiet walk thru Dellwater, I headed homeward towards the 4th avenue exit. But just before I went thru the tunnel under 5th ave, a butterfly landed on the cobblestone path: my fall favorite Common Buckeye. Its an iconic fall species simply because its coloration matches fall's overall atmosphere.

I've read on Discord alert some nice birds around:a Bald eagle flyover over Greenwood and a Bluebird at the Beard Gravesite for example. Rusty Blackbird at the Prospect Lake northern section and Northern Harrier over the Nethermead commands interest. And more white crowned sparrows in a few places.

In any case ,it was a good day to be out ( and off too).

Plenty of activity throughout the park today, keeping our pace slow as birds appeared everywhere on our route.

The Pier 1 salt marsh is often a nice place to stay put for a while, as birds find their way onto the pier from the south. Odd to see one on marsh grass, but we had a LINCOLN'S SPARROW there and a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER in the sumacs.

On our way to Pier 3, we had our first-of-season BRANTS, a flock of 12 flying south high over Brooklyn Heights.

Last outing of the season is next Wednesday!

11 participants, 37 species

Hi Peter,

Our last Tuesday walk of the season was a good one. The sun even peeked out late in the morning! We had 61 species, with a mix of ducks, including Green-winged Teals and a Ring-necked, sparrows, and lingering warblers, plus a few raptors on the move and our first Tufted Titmouse of the season.

Thank you to Sheila, Megan, and Angie for co-leading all season, and the many regulars who've made it such a special group. I can't believe the season's over for us, but I look forward to seeing folks in the months ahead.

A particularly bright and contrasty individual, larger than Tennessee Warbler, a source of possible confusion, with a pale eyebrow, gray head, and yellow-green below. No wing bars or tail spots. Bill heavier than Tennessee. Foraging waist-high in tops of weeds in Pier 6 wildflower meadow, then flew out to the small patch of lawn SE of here, where I could not relocate it. Typical OCWA behavior--moving fast in the tops of the flowers ,with horizontal foraging posture--defensive strategy more to be constantly on the move than overly skulking."

Hi Peter,
Another brilliant Fall day, crisp weather and crispy underfoot. We had a huge frenetic flurry at GAP, no doubt overnight arrivals, and then a good number of birds throughout the park. Except for Field Sparrow we ran the sparrow list down including the Nelson's, Vesper, White-crowned, Savannah and more; and some but not a lot of warbler species, for a total of 64 overall. Not the 74 we had last week but good for a Fall day. Lots of new faces including 3 folks from the UK.

While welcome, the first rain in weeks had to happen just as our walk started! We decided to head straight to the Pier 3 lawn, where some sparrows have been feeding this week.

On our way, we spotted a smallish dark duck flying in from the harbor, showing a thickish white stripe under the wings. Upon reaching land, it did a u-turn and went back out to the water. Studying guides later, I'm confident we had a blue-winged teal.

Hoping for better weather next week!

2 hardy participants, 17 species.

Mike

Hi Peter,

It was a quiet day in the park but I'm sure that'll change when these 80-plus temperatures finally break this week. That said we had one very memorable sighting: an adult Peregrine Falcon, perched on a dead tree on the Peninsula, lit up by the sun's rays, let us watch it for at least 20 minutes, and still hadn't moved once we decided to push on. The bird was spotted by a visitor from Portland, Oregon; another visitor in the group, all the way from Karachi, told me it had been his dream to see this bird. The second highlight was a Clay-colored Sparrow on the Nethermead, which was a lifer for a few people.

We had 41 species, though I had to leave around 11AM after we found the Clay-colored. The group continued, and added a few more species: Brown Thrasher (score another for the Picnic House drip), American Kestrel, Savannah Sparrow, and Eastern Phoebe.

Next week is our last walk of the season! It's been a strange fall with all these warm days. But maybe we'll go out with a bang. Thanks to Sheila, Megan, and Angie for co-leading.
