Dear folks:
Due to Hurricane Sandy's impact upon Prospect Park , park closure by the authorities (signs & barriers at park entrances) and vigilance by enforcement , and as well no public transportation, the NOVEMBER 1st BBC eve program " BIRDING CUBA , presented by Rusty Harold has been CANCELED.
The date will be rescheduled hopefully in early December. Keep posted to http://www.brooklynbirdclub.org/meetings.htm for the future rescheduled date. A note will be sent on the new date.
Stay safe !
Peter

Prospect Post Sandy gems; Sandy's wrath upon Gateway parks
Just a note here that what is posted for Prospect may be tempting for birders to enter the park, which officially is "closed". People have been entering the park at their risk , because from what I have seen today parkwide when i went back to work, poses hazards and risks to your safety with all the cracked ,fallen, and severely damaged trees. There are scattered old great tree falls, quite a number of them big giants. So, fair warning.
Before I post Prospect 's birds, there is sobering news regarding Fort Tilden and Jamaica Bay Refuge , both victims of Sandy's wrath. Fort Tilden's beach dunes are completely gone. It's now flat between the ocean and the concrete drive. ( I don't even know about Riis Beach. Breezy Point as you know with the unbelievable tragic fire that wiped out 100 homes, is devastating, likely for many many years to come a changed landscape)
In Jamaica Bay, the West Pond trail along the south side is damaged, most dramatically , there is now a breach of the West Pond, no longer brackish (freshwater?) . Salt has entered in; the trail washed out , from Andrew Baksh's blog pics, it looks like at least 200 feet breach. see the link

ON a very busy day chipping damaged tree debris, the first birds I saw were overflying BRANTS, 23 birds over the Garage area where the distorted flying flock headed south over hurricane impacted Prospect. It wasnt until after work that I was able to bird the park.
A first stop at the Upper Pool Wildflower Meadow revealed a female BLUE GROSBEAK, along with a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW in the tall grasses. A phish, sometimes the rare bird came out; later a second female BLUE GROSBEAK hid in the mugwort field at the eastern point of the Breeze Hill meadow, near the colorful orange Bald Cypress tree. Along with the latter specimen, a FIELD and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW accompanies it with a host of SONGS and WHITE-THROATED . Most surprising was a juvenile male INDIGO BUNTING along the middle mound; I also saw INDIGO BUNTING in the meadow of "fallem timber" at the west end of Nethermead bridge ( top).
John Asher reports some waterfowl of note on the Lake. His lake highlight is GREEN-WINGED TEAL seen from the Peninsula's "pink beach, on the Peninsula north side; also note, AMERICAN WIGEON, GADWALL, & 5 PIED-BILLED GREBE
However, on land, count PINE SISKIN his best sighting, 27 birds on Lookout, with TENNESSEE WARBLER and PURPLE FINCH in tow. See his list

post Sandy's devastating aftermath
One could not walk through Prospect without seeing large trees down from Sandy's wrath. There were several large ones, two i saw along the lake edge quite big and now fallen victims.Rumor i heard was 100 + fallen trees and seen further by numerous big broken limbs. It seems like Prospect does not like all green areas get a break after two ice storms,a tornado, and now two hurricanes.Nature gets the last word.
***************
On the lake, nothing unusual came in though the few days hereon should be checked in case of ultra rarity came back towards the ocean and decide to stop in. Today,it was typical stuff. Reports as well as my late afternoon trip saw these birds:
4 RING-NECK DUCKS
5 BUFFLEHEADS
2 PIED-BILLED GREBE
Over 25 NORTHERN SHOVELER
Over 50 RUDDY DUCK
2 GREAT EGRET west island
over 15 COOT
****************
During my scanning from the south shore,a timely flyover of 23 BRANT.
Other birds seen: juncos,chipping sparrow,2 titmice,BC chickadee
In the days to come, there will be extensive cleanup.Park is still officially close,so be safe out there.

hurricane safety; prospect lake birds
A report of 5 BUFFLEHEAD on the lake with 4 PIED BILLED GREBE.
It,s important to use good judgement in this dangerous time in the park, which flying limbs and falling trees in the pre worst period has already happened this morning.
Though i had to come in under orders but we left already by noon, we saw already a jogger hit by a limb on Ocean Ave next to the park fence by Parkside with emergency vehicle s on the scene; also, my work truck with two coworkers just missed by 5 seconds getting crushed by a giant Willow tree over the Tunnel Arch tunnel by the zoo on that east drive.A biker in front of my truck {yes i was in it)was brushed by the limbs just barely, which sheared off the lamppost there.
so,please don't go into the officially closed park for your safety.
thanks
peter

Hi Peter Just found a White-crowned Sparrow im inside the prospect zoo by pond on trail to barn John Sent from my iPhone
Sandy ( or "Frankenstorm") moves in
Pretty soon, the outer storm bands with its strong winds and heavy rain will hit the NYC area perhaps as soon as Sunday eve. The NYC Parks Dept has declared parks closed as of Sunday 5 pm ...so we should heed the warning as trees , snapped limbs will come down. [ I don't even know if I have to go to work Monday but I dread the upcoming week , what tree falls and damages lie ahead for me and my crews to clean up....DON'T WANT TO KNOW :( ]
Anyway, here is the Alliance severe weather alert from their website
http://www.prospectpark.org/about/severe-weather-watch?utm_source=Severe+Weather+Watch+10%2F27%2F12&utm_campaign=severe-weather-watch-10-27-2012&utm_medium=email
Some birders may want to look for tropical birds along the river from brooklyn or nyc piers.. But if mass transit shuts down, tough to get back....and floods, fallen power lines, etc
Anyway , be safe and stay indoors , and away from parks even the few days after as sometimes weakened trees can fall , even a week later from soggy roots and heavy trees....( i know, we get tempeted as to what might have blown in on Prospect Lake....)
I say , it's a crazy looking storm, like it's hitting pinball posts: a real hard left , then hard right.....weathermen say they never seen this before...only happen a few times the last 200 years...

Prospect Oct 27th : No Barnacle
No reports of the Barnacle goose ( BAGO ) today, likely the cause from heighten
weekend crowds from the noisy and popular Prospect Park Alliance annual
Halloween walk event on Lookout Hill and the electric boat doing tours
on the lake.
I had a third hand report that the BAGO flew out with "migratory"
Canada Geese heading southwest but I am not sure when if this morn or
late yesterday.Rob Jett was in Greenwood Cemetery this morning and
didn't see geese there. Its possible the flock went to the under
construction Bush Terminal Park where I have seen waterfowl flocks on a
private tour in the past or somewhere else in east river ( Governors
island or Buttermilk channel? ).
Here's hoping we see the goose back again or it might have fled the
coop from the approaching Sandy for safe haven.
Pine Siskins were in Prospect, 11 seen at the upper pool wildflower
meadow ,seen by Keir Randall. NASHVILLE & BLACKPOLL WARBLERS
are nice birds to get now as well as FIELD SPARROWS ( These cool birds I like) ; also FOX
SPARROW adds to coolness....
A note about the Barnacle Goose. Regarding its disappearance, I am sure much to the disappointment to anyone looking for it today, the fact that it took off works in the goose's favor. It's not imprinted by humans if it was a captive bird, since this bird seems to not favor being around too many people or even the boat ride that was running today...So, maybe this might impress the NYS Avian Records Committee that reads my Ebird Yahoo groups regarding the goose's inner character and behavior..We will see...so write out those reports if you saw the bird and send them to NYSARC ( see my previous post on how); lets campaign for electing the bird "acceptance" with a "Brooklyn hurrah" ( or cheer?) ...

Prospect October 25th; Barnacle Goose continues..all over the place
To the delight of birders today, BARNACLE GOOSE (BAGO) continues to appear, actually moving about and using all shores of Prospect Lake, mainly sticking with the Canada Geese flock.( a smart idea). First report came very early of the rare goose near 3 Sisters Islands, followed by a mid afternoon observation inside the new rink area, on the new lawn, then lastly, on the west shore of the Lake as reported by several birders. Observers reporting: Russ Alderson, Rob Bate, Rusty Harold, and Andy Biederman.
Let me take an opportunity to stress for this ultra rarity to report your sighting to the NEW YORK STATE AVIAN RECORDS COMMITTEE ( NYSARC) who needs to review this Prospect species. Much ado has to do with the bird's provenance or true origins since this species is known to be a captive bird. ( my feeling is that its wild, just my gut ) For this particular BAGO, you should go see it whichever NYSARC decides in the future so that it becomes apart of your lifelist. Even if the decision is not in the bird's favor, it's a handsome bird to watch.
For more on the BAGO species problematic status, go view NYS Birds posting by NYSARC member Angus Wilson:
Look for "Angus Wilson" in link below
http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01
For those wanting to get this Prospect species documented and possibly accepted , please fill out the NYSARC form below, especially those of you who took pics which will show all definitive details and strong facilitation .It will help a great deal whichever way NYSARC decides , the documentation helping greatly in a historical and scientific sense. http://www.nybirds.org/NYSARC/goodreport.htm
Now back to the day's reports Overlooked by the Barnacle Goose, the cooperative VESPER SPARROW likes the Sparrowbowl site, my sighting coming at lunchtime, as the tame like bird came quite close to me on the lawn where I stood quite still. Surrounded by HERMIT THRUSHES, It 's a juvenile and the striking eye ring is quite a field mark. Matthew Wills and Peter Colen also viewed this bird. Sparrows are active in many spots still in lesser numbers though, most notable WHITE-THROATED. Also overlooked, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, reported by Ann Lazarus, in the Lullwater (west side); Add also 5 other warbler species , including NASHVILLE, reported by Rafael.

A BARNACLE GOOSE was on the Lake in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park today.
It was first seen with a group of Canada Geese along the Peninsula
shore at about 10:30 am, not long after a rain shower let up. Being
without a field guide, and unexperienced with the species, I gave a
description to Doug Gochfeld by phone, and he said it sounded good.
Later observed on land, it showed no bands or missing toes; I believe
that recent analysis of vagrant goose occurrence patterns suggests
that most are probably legitimate wild birds. According to subsequent
postings the bird was still present to this evening. A few pictures
are posted at: http://www.digitalmediatree.com/arboretum/barnacle/
Other birds of note in Prospect included two VESPER SPARROWS among
continued good numbers of sparrows, continued PINE SISKINS, and a
NASHVILLE WARBLER.
Good birding,

Barnacle Goose latest
A text from Dennis Hrehowsik 521 pm reports the Barnacle Goose still present along the west shore of Prospect Lake. One should have a good chance seeing this bird anywhere in the western sector of the lake, hanging out with the Canada Goose flock
Here's hoping the goose sticks around tomorrow and the next, "Brooklyn bound". ;)>

Hi Peter
The Barnacle Goose was by the Rustic Shelter with 18 Cago at 5:50 but at 6:05 the flock flew towards Bbg and then turned around and left park over greenwood ave headed in direction of gw cemetery

BARNACLE GOOSE Prospect Lake update 10/24
Thanks to Janet Zinn, here are photos you can view on her facebook gallery for this first time appearance of this goose species ( provenance pending) in Prospect Park. A bird profile is at the end of this page.
http://www.facebook.com/Janet.Zinn.Photography
My ebird yahoo group listserve post :
When I finally arrived at the lake this afternoon between 230 and left 315, the
BARNACLE GOOSE was first seen offshore by West Island rustic shelter, gliding
towards 3 Sisters Islands by the lake middle southern shore. It joined up with
Canada geese going towards the peninsula .So heading over there to get a closer
look, I arrived "Over There" only to see that the Barnacle doubled back ,now ashore on the west
shore where I was previously, leading me sort of on a " wild goose chase".
As I approached that spot, it was already gliding away on the lake back to the
flock, its skittish behavior making it a great candidate for a wild one..
Many thanks to Alex Wilson. As " lighting strikes twice" ,potentially, this
incredible fortune for Prospect is again the first time ever a new
species appeared in this park's storied history.. ( Re Western Kingbird a less
2 weeks ago is a first)
I wonder what's next for a first timer...
Great birding,

Prospect Oct 23rd ;Hermits everywhere
HERMIT THRUSHes filled the park this morning, obviously a surge overnight that also bought in many sparrows. Among the rare sparrows, VESPER and CLAY-COLORED were reported by Rob Bate. The VESPER became two prior to my lunch hour, seen by Adam Welz in the Sparrowbowl site, off to the edges though. CLAY-COLORED is at Breeze Hill, just up from the feeder site ( no feeders up yet), according to Rob Bate.
Some late warblers also in town, namely BLACK-THROATED GREEN ( Elyse, at Rustic Arbor); BLACK-THROATED BLUEs, NORTHERN PARULA and MAGNOLIA which are detailed below.
Also of note 5 PURPLE FINCHES at Sparrowbowl ( RBate) and elsewhere. A MERLIN perched in a snag next to Lower Pool ( HClevens)
Over at the garden, a BALTIMORE ORIOLE is a late bird though this species is known for late fall overstays, sometimes making it to the Xmas counts in these parts.
Pending more reports later, this is the word at 1pm.

Prospect epilogue Oct 22nd; Fall's sparrows
Today's VESPER SPARROW is abit overdue but nevertheless welcomed. This species marks the 14th sparrow species to appear this fall, which in our circles acclaim it a very good season, given a few rarities despite the absence of the usual ball field fence enclosure. I provided a listing below the season's tally, still in progress and plenty of good birding to follow. So keep on birding. So Thanks to Matthew Wills in sending me word that several of us were able to view this rarity.By the way, the Vesper appears to be a juvenile, by the absence of reddish feathering on its upper wing tertials...
It was a good day. Along with Vesper, a few WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, one in the Upper Pool wildflower Meadow, and another seen in the brush just south of the "Golden Stairs" no longer its pristine state but a dilapidated one.Throw in 2 PURPLE FINCHES as well.
The Sparrowbowl finally live up to its iconic reputation as a sparrow haven, with besides the Vesper, numerous CHIPPING, some WHITE-THROATED and JUNCOS. I believe there was a SWAMP as well.I did not spent too much time here so I am sure there were other possibilities.
Rafael reported a good one today,an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.This rarity hung out with nine Kinglets, foraging in the phragmites inside the Vale Cashmere pool. Some late warblers also came though,a MAGNOLIA ( 16th street entrance brush) , and BLACK-THROATED BLUE ( Matthew Wills)
.
This morning , first bird that caught my eye, ( hoping I am not being eyed), a perched MERLIN in the reliable snag on the south side of the Tennis House.
And...It looks like the Lake is getting full of COOT....

Prospect Oct 21st, quite late Waterthrush species
From John Ascher:
Hi Peter,
Here's my list for today. I was very surprised to see the waterthrush. It was in
the weed patch towards GAP from the Picnic House where there are cut logs. The
supericilium was white and expanded posteriorly consistent with Louisiana but I
wish to study my photos more before making a certain ID. I will send you the
photos as soon as I can find my download cord.

Brief notes Oct 21st
This quiet day has a few brief reports to post here for Prospect or Greenwood Cemetery.First Prospect.
Early this morning,Steve Nanz reported 8 PINE SISKINS at Maryland Monument. in the late afternoon ,when I ventured out,at the monument base in the lawn, over 75 CHIPPING SPARROWS with a few other species. At the top of the stairs same spot, I saw either a TENNESSEE WARBLER or ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER that disappeared quickly in the dense flower stand as light waned. Prospect Lake has 4 Coots,17 RUDDY DUCKS and 8 NORTHERN SHOVELERS. *************************************************** In Greenwood Cemetery, Orrin Tilevitz had LINCOLN SPARROW at Crescent Water. Cindy Case reported a GRAY CHEEKED TYPE THRUSH at the Catacombs.

Look what you might find at your door ! ( 1, 2 or 3?)
The following photos were forwarded to me from Paul Keim, courtesy of Debbie Keim. The photos are from Paul's coworker who lives near LaGuardia Community College, which is right across the channel from Greenpoint , Brooklyn.. The big surprise outside his business shop door in Long Island City this past week. ( yes, I know , it's in Queens but who wouldn't want to see these photos ?)
The bird is , ( what does one expect from this unpredictable species turning up God knows where ?) is a VIRGINIA RAIL. So, before you leave for work, look before you step outside...There just might be a rail waiting for you.

From Rob Jett , on BICKNELL'S THRUSH account and map
This morning Heydi and I were birding in Green-Wood Cemetery and came across a Bicknell's Thrush. We were walking down a steep path on Ocean Hill towards the "Catacombs". There's a stand of conifers at that spot. A few Hermit Thrushes were in the area, but a gray-cheeked-type thrush was on the path beneath the pines. The bird had very noticeable rufous-colored tail feathers and primaries. It did not pump its tail. It quickly spooked and hopped over the hillside, out of sight before either of us could take any photos. We decided to play a Bicknell's call. The bird responded immediately, coming back over the hill and perching briefly on a pile of broken branches to the left of the path. The bird assumed an alert posture, stretching its head out. As we continued to play the call it came closer and closer, eventually flying into a multiflora rose shrub a few yards away. When we stopped playing the call it dropped down out of sight. Heydi suggested playing Gray-cheeked Thrush calls. We played it for about a minute but the bird didn't react. We switched back to Bicknell's Thrush and the bird immediately emerged from the shrubs and walked out onto the path in front of us.

10/19 report
This morning I can report a Belted Kingfisher, pair of Am Wigeon and 13 Northern Shoveler at the lake. Flock of Sparrows on the Peninsula lawn, nothing unusual that I could see. Another group in the wildflower meadow by the Upper Pond included a Field Sparrow. Had good close view allowing me to check off all the field characters described in Sibley. 2 Eastern Phoebes there too, and at least one more at the Peninsula. But most birds were lying low because of the wet.
Keep up the good work!
Best wishes, and thanks again,

Fox Sparrow sighting 10/18
Yesterday, Adam Welz and visiting British birder William Earp spotted a FOX SPARROW on the Peninsula. Expected in fall of course, it is , though ,early...and a record setter!
The old record now bested by yesterday's Fox Sparrow was October 21, 1960 (by Olney Raymond)

Prospect Oct 18th: Clay-colored sparrow , Kinglets not Kingbird today
(My apologies for not tweeting or alerting my bird groupies due to my forgetting my cell phone this morning)
During my lunch hour, behind Field 6's home plate, in the fence below the 6 sign, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen, noted by its buffish breast and absence of eye lores. The bird was hanging with a CHIPPING SPARROW flock including 2 WHITE-CROWNEDS actively moving in that area , venturing over towards field 7 as well.
More details later, as my lunch hour is over........
Evening post:
With WEKI being a "One day wonder", the same term could be applied for the sparrow and hermit thrush numbers of yesterday, numbers dropping dramatically today. So many Hermit Thrushes yesterday, "where they go ?" today. Kinglet numbers went up , especially after work, where along the Upper Pool fence, several RUBY-CROWNEDs with a few GOLDEN CROWNEDs were near ground level, in the fences, and a few times I saw them chasing each other. Adam reported a good number of kinglets today in his report.
The Lake isn't in play yet despite a lone AMERICAN WIGEON drake and still small numbers of RUDDY DUCKS and NORTHERN SHOVELERS along with only 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES and AMERICAN COOTS.
A late report from Adam reports the season's first FOX SPARROW.

Western Kingbird Update
From a source, I received a note that the WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen in waning evening light in the same tree as reported by Field #6, the bare branch large elm next to the cemetery fence. It was reported with 90 % certainty based on its shape and tones .
This is good news if anyone goes checking Thursday morning. fingers crossed....

Prospect October 17th "upstaged" Sparrows on their super day
In what was , in my opinion , the best sparrow day in Prospect this fall regarding numbers, dominated by the ubiquitous presence of WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (WTSP), their day instead was upstaged by Prospect Park's first ever long overdued WESTERN KINGBIRD. Go figure.... ( Sparrows must be muttering Rodney Dangerfield's famous line "we get no respect ")
This morning, before I loaded my work vehicle with tools, the numbers of sparrows in the work storage area by 9th street steered and sharpened my attention. Standing still, leaning on my vehicle, the good numbers of sparrows started to surround me, as if I was playing a part in Alfred Hitchcocks' The Birds. Among the numerous WTSP, 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were tame enough to come close along with an infusion of HERMIT THRUSHES, very evident parkwide. Throw in some WINTER WRENS , at least 7 I spotted today which Cornell Ebird says is too high !
Throughout the day, trying very very hard not to get distracted as I worked [ Believe me, IT WAS HARD! ;) ] , on my free time, I managed to spot 10 species sparrows. Here they are ( in no particular order): WHITE-THROATED, WHITE-CROWNED, FIELD,SONG, DARK-EYED JUNCO, EASTERN TOWHEE, SAVANNAH, SWAMP,LINCOLN, CHIPPING. At one point, at Breeze Hill lone pine in the triangle lawn , I watched 7 species sparrows that included two WHITE-CROWNED, a SAVANNAH, and 2 FIELDs. Then after work, before I got the call from Rob, together in the Sparrowbowl, a FIELD, a LINCOLN and another WHITE-CROWNED. I say, it was a great day for diversity. The best spots , well for WTSP, everywhere ! But for the other species: the east path from Grand Army plaza to the Vale cashmere; Breeze Hill ( of course), Sparrowbowl, adjacent to the Tennis House, and the southern edge of the ballfields. It was the last location about 350 pm that the bell was rung by
WESTERN KINGBIRD (WEKI), spotted by Rob Jett, along with Bobbi Manian, who fortunately had her camera with her. For your view, check Bobbi's facebook gallery of the special bird (Link inserted below).
The WEKI was spotted flying across the Ballfields , then flying up to the top of a large elm tree , by Field #6, before after 5 minutes ( and I got there too late by moments), before the WEKI flew south into the Cemetery. We looked in vain from there to Center Drive up to Lookout Hill. Lets hope it stays tomorrow with word gone out tonight. Good Luck and do text me asap please if u see the WEKI.
Oh, guess I almost forgot about the flyover PINE SISKINs......
An evening report from Kathy Toomey on the latest Sparrow new for this day : VESPER SPARROW seen on Breeze Hill lawn area...sorry Vesper, you can't top that WEKI today..
11 species sparrows reported today...

From Kathy Toomey :
Peter,
I went for a short walk in Prospect Park from about 5 to 6:30 pm
around the lake and over to Breeze Hill. There were mostly Song
sparrows and White throats, but as I was about to walk away, I saw a
Vesper sparrow, Field sparrow and mature White crowned sparrow in the
same area. Later I saw an immature White crowned close to the picnic
tables by Lamp post 249. Thanks to Bob Machover and Sandy Paci for
providing good looks at a Vesper sparrow on last Saturday's trip to
NJ, which enabled me to easily recognize the Vesper here in Brooklyn.

Plumb Beach closure
After a heads up from a birder, I inquired the Jamaica Baykeeper over this closure. It is because Plumb Beach shoreline is being restored by a major dredge company ,pumping back 127,000 cubic yards of sand plus a new groin or jetty will be built to stop the eastward erosion of sand into the channel.
So a heads up for anyone looking to bird PB this next week.
