Overcast gloomy skies didn't stop the birds. In several locations, it looked very birdy as I drove by.And in other spots, scattered few birds filled in. Mostly sparrows in sight, warblers backed up. But the bird of the day was CAPE MAY WARBLER.
The bright CAPE MAY WARBLER got pizazz. A bold bird, it was initially spotted along the fence next to the Upper Pool Dog beach , Rob Jett spotting the bird ; the bird then flew to the Wildflower Meadow fence, where this Cape May "proudly" showed off itself in the fence in full "regalia" for me and Rob. And it took off after an "eternal" 20 seconds" , but again showing audacious manner, sort like a fearless warrior, the Cape May flew right at me ! It only came close a foot right of my shoulder. (AWESOME!)... I like this bird! Later, after work, on my regular birding walk, I found the Cape May again, this time it's hopping on small lily pads on the other side of the dog beach water fence! I never seen that before of any warbler species. Not only bravado, its got brilliance too!
Where the Cape May lingered, nearby two other noted birds appeared. In the Wildflower meadow, Rob and I watched FIELD SPARROW, which perched in good view on a tall mugwort. After work was over, I watched a MERLIN steadfastly glancing in different directions from the snag above the Tennis House. SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS flew over several spots with numerous TREE SWALLOWS and CHIMNEY SWIFTS.
The Breeze Hill dirt mounds were fine ,nit numerous except for the Song Sparrows, but here with a reminder Winter isn't far off, as the bird's name implies, WINTER WREN, acting very secretly under foliage. Later, I found two more cooperative WINTER WRENS, in the Peninsula sumacs, and the other next to the Well Drive shipping containers.
From the Wellhouse to the shipping containers on Well Drive, the slopes teemed with abundant sparrows , mostly Songs and White-throateds. Betcha something good in there as well....
