Pine Siskin on Evening Primrose stalk, photo by Peter Colen |
This day it was Butterfly Meadow's turn to shine. In an ode towards coming winter, 20 PINE SISKINS were seen mid afternoon, first on the ground below Joe-Pye-Weed wildflowers at Butterfly Meadow's southwest perimeter before the siskins flushed into the wildflower enclave , where they joined the already dominating presence of AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. Observers Rob Jett and Peter Colen were first on the scene, followed by myself , then Rob Bate at different intervals.
Most times the siskins fed on Evening Primrose seeds, while the goldfinches kept to the dried seeds of abundant Cupflowers. At one point, two siskins alighted on a tall primrose plant where Peter Colen snapped off a few close shots, to be profiled here later.
As Siskins made news, so did the continuing BLUE GROSBEAK juvenile, landing in the fence of Butterfly's north fence near Arleen's Pines thru the sharp eyes of Rob Bate.. BLUE-WINGED Warbler was previously seen about here by Rob Jett and Peter Colen.
While hot action ensued at Butterfly, elsewhere the Peninsula meadow came alive with warblers. Earlier , 6 species hung inside a broken large limb beneath the giant Willow Oak at the lakeside . Later, Rob bate and I saw a plethora of warblers, mostly Palms, Blackpoll, BT Blue, BT Green and Parulas going in all sort of directions at the Sumacs east end , into the persimmon trees and birch, linden and sycamore trees. It was great stuff...
As fall migration offers its yield, a somewhat symbolic observation for diurnal movement was seen above the Tennis House, where i spotted after work, a horde of CHIMNEY SWIFTS with many TREE SWALLOWS, joined in mishmash ,chaotic flight patterns.
Perhaps tomorrow promises a heavier action for the BBC walk...we will see.

This afternoon Peter Colen and I spotted a flock of about 18-20 Pine Siskins in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. The birds were feeding with many goldfinches on the Joe-Pye Weed, Jerusalem Artichoke and Evening Primrose at the Butterfly Meadow on Lookout Hill. I'm guessing that this will become a fairly common occurrence throughout the city this winter given the recent winter finch forecast. Here's hoping that they'll be followed real soon by crossbills and more.
Good birding,
Rob
