Its a tradition of sorts that birders get the first day a start on the new year's birds, sometimes for big years and sometimes just a celebration of birding and new life. My bird club walk for example this day , rescheduled from earlier postponement from February 2012 celebrates such an idea, not focused for rarity but all birds we cherished. ( by the way, it was a exhilarating windy cold 14 miles walk from Owls Head to Coney Island ! List on the trips blog to be posted soon).
Prospect Park is one terrific site to celebrate the beauty of birds on the first day. New Years Day saw the likes of good birds, beginning with the very active feeders , seeing 6 PINE SISKIN, picking up from the previous day, COMMON REDPOLL, PINE SISKIN ,WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL ( Rose Garden west slope, also Ricks Place) and a terrific, astounding record for its numbers seen, AMERICAN PIPIT , 36 reported in both the ballfields and Tennis House (Rob Jett) ; later, 22 seen on the Nethermead and surrounding open fields. This is a great start to 2013 ! What better location to start than Prospect Park for firsts dibs to a new year of birding.

Comments: My first walk in Prospect Park for the year 2013. The best bird sps was a small flock of Common Redpolls feeding on a gum tree, near the Quaker Cemetery. Also in the same tree were Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches, & Black-capped Chickadees. And the big surprise, no starlings at all.
