It was Birdathon day, or better known by the more fancier name International Bird Migration Day. This is a day teams or individual birders count many species to raise monies for just conservation causes for birds, mostly for habitat conservation.
Mary and I did our own casual thing at Greenwood Cemetery but things were put in human perspective as we with Joe Borker and two other birders heard a very loud car crash in the cemetery along Forest Ave , heard from over the ridge which one of the young birders with us investigated and called us urgently when he saw the upside down car. The driver , a young woman (with her freind), maybe distracted, took her eyes off the road ,apparently was going way too fast down the sloping , very windy drive and hit a left roadside dogwood tree (shredding bark) that made the car flip upside down (on a swerve ?) . (We really don't know for sure not having seen the crash that popped the air bags). Regardless, we assisted with Joe calling 911 and me and Mary plus the two other young birders helping out as I watched the smoking car (fortunately no fire). The two occupants were alive and walking after shock wore off; they did go into the ambulances later. Lots of emergency vehicles showed up.Hoping all is well with them.So as much we love birds, the human side of it comes into mind , with helping hands an urgent need at the right time.
I expect to hear good things with the birdathon results for today. So far , I know I owe $86.48 cents for one of the causes. Tell you all later the Brooklyn tallies...
Peter

Adam Welz:
Having missed out on yesterday's bonanza due to work, I braved the wet park this morning. 2 Siskin in Midwood were weirdly late, had a nice Gray-cheeked Thrush near the stairs, also Veery, Swainson's & Wood. Cracking views of Blackburnian and Cape May warblers on Lookout -- some came down to eye level. Twitter was very silent today, I guess because none of the birdathoners wanted to give any gen away!
Cheers

What a way to celebrate the IMBD (= International Migratory Bird Day). Despite the rain, dark skies, the birds were quite active, and in comparison with last weekend when I saw 4-5 sps of warblers, between today and yesterday, recording around 20 sps. Yesterday I got 15 sps, and today 18 sps. Amazing day, and nice walk of about 5 hrs.
Brooklyn is great birding, even it is raining!!!
