A place called the Peninsula (Prospect )

Birders including the Tuesday Brooklyn Bird Club (BBC) walk  led by Bobbi Manian ( subbing today for Rob Bate) and separately Eni,Elyse and Peter Colen  called the Peninsula the best spot today. The warblers seen there  made up a diverse active array . From reports received, time well spent  was time well enjoyed as the birds kept active  for a long time.

Bobbi's group did very well, stretching  the 3 hour walk into 7.5 hours. Why not ?  Warblers will only be here a little while longer and now is the time to enjoy them. 18 species warblers were their tally among 65 species of birds for the BBC group.

In the freelance group of Eni , Peter C, ELyse, 18 warblers species also was achieved. And again, with warbler stirring the pot, we get stuck watching.. Its fall birding !

I was able to to get down there to the Peninsula but I was delayed as a small flock at Terrace Bridge took 20 minutes of my time after work. Among  warblers flitting about at the bridge upper east end, a gorgeous CANADA WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER (female), BLACKPOLL and a female TENNESSEE WARBLER all stay put  in mostly the sumacs and neighboring Hackberry tree. For good measure, a great looking BLUE-HEADED VIREO swung by.

Finally getting to the Peninsula, but electing to try the sumacs then the lake shore , only the latter area  provided interesting birds. I added PALM , YELLOW (2), BLACK-THROATED GREEN , NORTHERN PARULA and another BLACKPOLL for warblers. An OSPREY with pulled in wings , on a dive flying overhead caught my attention. But getting late and beat, I headed home rather than head into the Peninsula.

It seems a bottled up effect occurred on the Peninsula today. Maybe and hopefully the birds seen by  Bobbi's BBC group, and the others might stick around tomorrow. Worth a shot.

BBC Tuesday Walk
leading : Bobbi Manian

Hi Peter,

we had 12 people on today's walk.  It was a great group with everyone spotting birds, making my first time out as a walk leader very easy!  The morning was cooler than expected (a few people were lamenting lack of gloves) but as the day warmed up the birds came out!  The peninsula and the area around 3 sisters were particularly active.  At times we had to walk away from dozens of warblers just to get on to the next location.  Phil Hore renamed the Thumb to Warbler Thumb!

Altogether, we had 64 species and 18 warblers over a 7 1/2 hour day.  Only fatigue sent us home at last - the warblers were still begging to be looked at down by West Island as the final two birders standing departed the park.

Best,
Bobbi

From Eni Falci

Peter-
The peninsula was so birdy with warblers and waterbirds Peter Colen and I could not tear ourselves away.  We had 18 warblers and there were probably others we could not call for sure with drap fall feathers.

The pine trees were a buzz with activity from noon on.
