RED-NECKED GREBE plus the merganser festivity that was topped by a high number of HOODED.Courtship display was noted and this adds to the enjoyment of watching these species as spring equinox approaches.
All morning the RED-NECKED GREBE stuck generally to the lake center, favoring the area aligned with Three Sisters strait. From this early morning center position, the grebe moved towards the islands by late morning. Here's hoping it sticks around abit.
The other notable observation was the number of HOODED MERGANSERS by Duck Island. I counted 25 birds , then two more closer to the lake center.27 birds is very good for the park, though doubt its a record. ( I believed we actually hit 30+ years ago, but I will check Cornell ebird)
Continuing with the merganser circuit, the 5 COMMON MERGANSERS are looking great, and 3 RED-BREASTED isn't too shabby to watch. The COMMON drakes are spectacularly white now, their breeding plumage climaxed to attract the two hens.
Its a good time now for the lake.Enjoy watching the lake's birds.
