Subject: Prospect highlights - 9/19/14
After running into you on Lookout, I ended up having a good birding morning. There were definitely pockets of activity within the park - you just had to find them. (And besides, it was a beautiful day to be outdoors.)
I ended up with 11 different warbler species, the highlight for me being a juvenile chestnut-sided by the waterfall in the ravine. (I got a great look - it stayed perched and even closed its eyes for a short nap.) The other warblers were the usual suspects: redstarts, black and whites, northern parulas, yellowthroats, northern waterthrush, magnolias, palms, black-throated blue, black-throated green and a lone yellow warbler.
Also saw a scarlet tanager working the treetops along the Lullwater and had a possible raven-sighting above Center Drive - it was a low flyover, big bird, tail seemed wedge-shaped, call was deeper/hoarser than a typical crow’s, but I’m not confident in my ability to differentiate.
Saw lots of red-eyed vireos, but still no luck with the Philadelphia.
