A darn pretty good day

In a day that required hard work, lots of patience and effort by an aggregate of birders, the most diversified warbler list to date for Prospect Park occurred today. The warm day heated up things but the spaced out quality sightings nevertheless bought in a cool 20 species warblers in Prospect Park. Hi lighting the warbler crop, KENTUCKY WARBLER, followed by BAY BREASTED ,CAPE MAY ,PRAIRIE & WILSON's led the warbler parade. However, not welcomed to see yet were BLACKPOLL WARBLERS !

This morning when I walked into the park at 6am, all I mostly saw were YELLOW RUMPED WARBLERS. It got to the point where my subconscious was saying ," any thing  but a rump, please".

It was about 8 am when the first call of a good quality warbler surfaced. Rob Bate tweeted BAY BREASTED WARBLER at the Concert Grove. Eventually during mid morning , I found this bird at the Terrace Bridge,in an large oak with a BLACK THROATED GREEN WARBLER; the Brooklyn Bird Club walk was on the other side of the Lulllwater but got the bird atop the bridge west end when I raced up to meet them when the Bay flew up the slope.

After the first Baybreasted warbler notice, however two CAPE MAY WARBLERS cast a spell on focused birders. Marc Brawer with Leslie Cadone and Tina Alleva found the pair south of Maryland Monument. After a short absence by the Capes,Matthew Wills in the Brooklyn Bird Club Tuesday walk  led by Bobbi Manian re found the Cape Mays in a tall Cherry west of the obelisk monument. The birds cooperated nicely for all.

Three BLACKPOLL WARBLERS appeared today. There is - that I hope is just an aberration this year- that the appearance of a female BLACKPOLL signifies the tail end of migration. The male and female were sighted on Lookout Hill, another male on Breeze Hill.

However the prize warbler was the KENTUCKY. I was in the Brooklyn botanic Garden early afternoon enjoying the Cherry blossoms when I received a text that Sean Sime found the rare warbler on the lower west slope of Lookout Hill. This is the side facing the Quaker Cemetery. Near the stairs ,Keir Randall heard the bird chipping  inside dense tangles and brush among a fallen timber and recorded a brief glimpse when I arrived 2 hrs later with Karen OHearn and Ed Crowns but the bird stopped singing.Just our luck and bad timing because after we left this spot , Dennis Hrehowsik reported it singing again at 615pm, one hour later. This was one very reclusive bird!

There were other notable birds to report.SCARLET TANAGERS,ORCHARD ORIOLES,a flyover COMMON LOON  and evening PURPLE MARTIN flyover ( D.Hrehowsik) at Lookout hill's Butterfly Meadow were observed. But it was warblers day and I had to be satisfied getting some new season warblers on my day off at my " office" Prospect Park where I actually work.
