Wow, it is already October.  2015 is going by so quickly.

Get your binoculars ready for a early fall walk this Sunday.  We will meet at the Boathouse at 8 am.  Vinnie will lead the tour.

Check the weather, if the tropical storm arrives with strong winds, we may not be able to bird.  Hopefully, this rain should be done by Sunday.  We do need the rain.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Michele, Eni, Vinnie and Neil.

Rain

About time.....

( we need it...for the plants)

Unfortunately, Tropical Storm Joaquin has become a hurricane and deja vu may hit Cape May/south NJ landfall Monday morning.. as projected by NOAA national weather service

Hi Peter,

Kathy and I had a group of about 10 today.  Overall it was slow, we eeked out 14 warblers but worked hard for them again this week.  Butterfly was most active and hooded remains by terrace bridge on the side closer to the sumacs.  I have a great photo from Gus will forward separately.

Slow day in the Hood

Slow day as per report from the Tuesday BBC walk leaders though they came thru with a good bird in a HOODED WARBLER working the shoreline on the south side of Terrace Bridge ( Prospect); the bird is the continuing female from the week past.

Hi Peter-

Early in the day, the Dell Water Drip was productive, with Cape May Warbler, Northern Flicker, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Red-eyed Vireo, and Eastern Towhee taking a dip along with the many Robins.

Wood Thrush, Swainson's Thrush, and another Cape May here other highlights.

Another unusual day in the Park.  The activity was quite slow, but some surprises came along during my walk today.

First, I tallied 9 sps of Warblers (See list below).  Their numbers are in the 1s, and of course, the number of sps are down, too.

But other sps of birds are making their "goodbye" to the park, like Red-eyed Vireo, and the thrushes ( I did not see 1 sps today).

But the most welcome one, was a single individual of a Rusty Blackbird, vocalizing on top of a tree between Upper & Lower Pools. Also a Towhee on the Ravine made the day.

Brooklyn is great birding!!

Peter,

12 birders met at the pergola on a cool September morning. Highlights were grey cheeked thrush, 1st year hooded hooded warbler and brief indigo bunting on butterfly meadow. Definite turnover from a few days ago with increased numbers of thrushes, ruby kinglet, phoebe and yellow rump. Fun day and beautiful weather.

Best,

Hi Peter and Rob,

We had 12 participants today including a couple from California.  The day started slowly with minimal activity on Lookout, we were excited to find a redstart.  As the day warmed up and especially in areas protected from wind, we found pockets of activity.   We ended up netting 14 species of warblers, but we worked for them!  Our group ran into Joe Giunta who was leading his own walk.  They had just seen a Hooded Warbler along the Lullwater just beyond the Sumacs.  We looked but didn't find it.  But later, after we finished on the Peninsula, Gus found the bird farther along the Lullwater, beyond the Terrace Bridge.  We got quick, but adequate looks at a young/female type.  Our other good birds were a Wood Thrush on the Penna (also found by Gus) and 8 Green-winged Teal on the lake.

Teal Touchdown in Prospect Lake

On a day of quiet, almost dud for birding, a Lake species we haven't seen regarding numbers, GREEN-WINGED TEAL  grew to eight birds today. While on land, a HOODED WARBLER registered in, topping the list that included also a few other interesting birds.

Early this morning the Brooklyn Bird Club Tuesday fall walk led by Bobbi Manian and Kathy Toomey spotted the teal flock in the lake middle.I was called while on duty and checked out the flock as well. No neck, small hunkered in ducks impressed upon me Green wings. Later ,in the late afternoon after my work ended, the flock actually moved closer to the west shore; several times  some of the birds opened their wings and eventually the whole flock flew towards the shoreline ,revealing their iridescent greenish wing speculum. This is a good size flock for Prospect Lake.

Meanwhile, a report of HOODED WARBLER was reported beneath the Terrace Bridge Lullwater ,spotted first by Joe Giunta by the pine grove. In the same area ,the other side of the bridge,on my route home from work, I observed a GRAY CHEEKED THRUSH, chipping away; unfortunately ,I am the wrong person it should chip to ( to determine a Bicknells),with my hearing impairment and inability to "beak read ". :)

Another noted bird , a female WILSONS WARBLER appeared in the Upper pool Meadow. But I can't complain about today's bird paucity. Having anyway to go to my hearing aid center for aid repairs at 50 Broadway, I lucked in with the ridiculously tame CONNECTICUT WARBLER on the historic Trinity Church grounds in lower NYC, a stones throw away.

Hi Peter,

Attached are two shots of the Greenwood Clay-colored Sparrow and one of a very confiding Canada Warbler also at the DellWater.

I tried to do some comparison shots of the Clay-colored with one of the Chippies, but I don't have any with the both go them in focus.

Kathy and I had 15 Warbler species at Greenwood, then the addition of the Trinity Church Connecticut in Manhattan for 16 total.

Great day!
