Iceland Gull morning on Prospect Lake

The trend continues with a pair of ICELAND GULLS seen in Prospect Lake west middle in early morning. Thanks to Sean Sime and Doug Gochfeld, I was able to get fantastic views through their scope of both rare gulls.

Responding to Karen O'Hearn's tweet, I of course made a slow beeline from Breeze Hill towards the west shore of the lake. There I found both Sean and Doug scoping . Because I forgot my bins at the office, I was glad to see the birds in the scope. The first bird was a bright juvenile Iceland Gull, calmly wading around. Then Doug took the scope to look for the other guy. That sighting revealed a much darker white and smaller size Iceland, maybe gene lines along the Kumlien's type. In any case , I would have missed that latter pretty much by a mile...

Glad to see the Iceland action continue !  It might be best to keep checking the lake from 8 am to 830 or up to nine am for the gulls. Bring a scope.

Addendum: the actual number of Iceland gulls simultaneously was 3.there was a flyover above the water gulls

White winged gulls whoopi de dah

An astounding event this early morning on Prospect Lake regarding both white winged gulls species. Both ICELAND and GLAUCOUS were reported, with the former outnumbering the latter 2 to 1.

Dennis Hrehowsik tweeted out first at 8:34 the GLAUCOUS GULL the larger species ( relative to larger than Herring Gull) seen in the Lake west-middle between Three Sisters and West Islands.

Then I rode towards to Lake for a look, I ran into Rob Bate who by then tweeted out that the Glaucous had left. But before it took off, it was seen at the same time with two ICELAND GULLS!
I haven't heard ever three such birds together simultaneously on Prospect Lake. With nearby Bush Terminal Pier park reporting regularly both species, its likely these gulls were from that site. I was lucky to see the one Iceland Gull, sitting  in the Lake middle halfway between Three Sisters and the Peninsula south shore.Nevertheless a great report to hear of these rare gulls visiting Prospect Lake.

On a lesser note, 7 is a great number . AS I mentioned yesterday with the 7 Ringnecked Ducks ( not seen today ) , 7 WOOD DUCKS  remain consistently on Upper Pool, three drake with the 4 hens.
The other noted duck species though just two, was the reappearance of the RED BREASTED MERGANSERS in the lake west section.

Snow geese

At West island gazebo 145 pm

Magnificent 7

One of the most handsome Eastern ducks not known for flashy color but rather bold order of contrasting hues is the RINGNECKED DUCK.When Karen O' Hearn tweeted out the report from southwest Prospect Lake, I made a trek there.

And sure as reported by West Island I could see seven magnificent looking drake RINGNECKED DUCKS wading away from the island towards 3 Sisters Islands;the great looking flock settled near those Islands.I made headway there where I caught observing again, the flock wading back towards West Island cove. While I watched from the Hammerhead Peninsula, they eventually crept closer to the island shore where they settled under a water snag, typical behavior for this skittish species.I'm glad I made the effort to see this another personal  favorite species.

There was another beauty on the water,a Drake WOOD DUCK. This lone bird took French fry scraps from a passerby at the base of the Duck Island gazebo shelter.

Yesterday's Mergansers were gone.Like through a revolving door, they left and the Ringnecks came in today; that's what make different days special and anticipatory. However the hen BUFFLEHEAD didn't obliged, opting to stick to the same spot yesterday, diving in front of Music Island by the rink.

The SNOW GEESE remain as well. From my rink spot,I scoped and saw the distant pair white geese behind Three Sisters;later they are very close to me at West Island shelter, feeding on the lawn before a small kid chased them.I took a phone photo.( no not the naughty kid)

Last the feeders are quiet as usual. Like Warner brothers Speedy Gonzales, the RED BREASTED NUTHATCH hit and ran so fast at the yellow feeder I barely had a millisecond look; it never returned. Maybe it went for French fries.

2/3 rd Mergs

Two of the three eastern US merganser species was present on Prospect Lake this morning. For this hardy veteran birder, that's a cool thing to see.

As I scanned the West Island cove , first I spotted the hen RED BREASTED MERGANSER. About five minutes later, the Drake appeared with this hen.In between the split sighting, among the Canada Geese horde along the south shore by the island, the HOODED MERGANSERS snuck into my view. I was vainly looking for the third species but alas no to complete the triple. ( that has happen recently maybe two winters ago here)

Otherwise it was a quiet walk. However my not expecting it, diving in front of Music Island, a hen BUFFLEHEAD made an interesting sighting for my morning list.

The RED BREASTED NUTHATCH continues to hog the feeders. But later more interesting and certainly out of season bird, Dan Frazer reported a hardy GRAY CATBIRD at the base of the slope trail that runs by the feeders. Also observed was a leucistic AMERICAN ROBIN at the same spot.

GWCemetery

From Orrin Tilevitz

At least 4, maybe 5, redtails (hawks) being blown around.   Fox sparrow near sylvan water.

COMMON GULL resurfaces

Shane Blodgett re known for finding this species on our Brooklyn coast, found the European species on the BROOKLYN ARMY TERMINAL PIER 4 in Sunset Park. 9:08 was the tweet from Shane.

Entrance to this locale is at 58th street. Look for the entrance to the right and before the Army Terminal complex gate ( restricted there not the Pier). Nearest train is the R line at 59th.

Prospect feeders

Prospect feeders , though not having seen anything truly rare in this off season, nevertheless provide much nourishment for our regular avian winter visitors. Having done my weekly seed refill, a few moments watching the feeders did allow me to see a few nice birds.

Foremost among the nice species, the lingering RED BREASTED NUTHATCH kept making quick stops among the different feeders. Zipping thru the 5 BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEE flock, this spunky nuthatch looks like it's breast got redder. Maybe it was just the winter light, but color we can appreciate right now. Speaking of red, the FOX SPARROW sought out fallen seed on the ground, adjacent to the pole; so that big sparrow is also hanging around. Among the assortment of feeder visitors, WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH, TUFTED TITMOUSE, RED WINGED BLACKBIRD, WHITE THROATED SPARROW and DOWNY WOODPECKER made visits.

I ran into Elyse Taylor at the feeders. She mentioned that coming into the 3rd Street park entrance, she spotted a pair of GOLDEN CROWNED KINGLET. Though uncommon we do find these birds hanging around in wintertime. Its a cool bird to enjoy watching , their spunky nature matching the Red breasted Nuthatch's fervor.

merg afternoon

RED BREASTED MERGANSER continue to be today's top species.A mixed pair was the antidote for a mixed bag of weather from early morn raindrops to peeking sun then stiff chilly breezy afternoon.

Sitting placidly in a quiet corner of Northwest Prospect Lake, the handsome merganser pair look quite quaint. The close pair was joined by a pair of PIED BILLED GREBEs that caught up with them, hung at tail' s end before wading towards the Western shore. I observed a third PIED bill by Peninsula cove making three noteworthy for the lake.

Yesterday I forgot to mention the pair of SNOW GEESE. Sticking true to the mainland opposite Duck Island, the white geese stayed close to the Canada geese. That island channel should be renamed Goose Strait IMHO.

yesterdays report on Black Vulture

An astounding number for these parts at one time. Black Vulture (  a more southern species) has really expanded northward >

winter action on Brooklyn's industrial coast

While i was away upstate looking for owls with friends, a few reports came in of nice action at Bush Terminal pier park. This park is best known for its winter action given its safe harbor areas that attract gulls and ducks.

During foggy conditions,Joshua Malbin reported both white winged gulls. ICELAND followed a GLAUCOUS late Sunday morning.Later Daisy Paul tweets a sighting of CANVASBACK a terrific sighting for the park.

This morning the good gull continues though a mile southwest at Brooklyn army Terminal pier 4.Bobbi Manian and Peter Paul Ebird reported BLACKHEADED GULL on the pier.its possible its the same bird from Coney Island creek a week ago. Then again, maybe theres more.In any case, winter action at these sites are good reasons to visit them.

Interesting gull on Prospect Lake

Spotted by Joshua Malbin about 115 this afternoon, this report posted in Facebook North American Gulls group.  Possibly a dark extreme Iceland Gull or leaning towards Thayers but I will post comment after experts weigh in.

Update. One of the comments I've read is the gull could be the. Kumielen Iceland gull, a darker than usual form.

In any case immature gulls are tough, not one of my favorite pastimes. 😊

Quiet waterfowl

It sure is quiet time now in Prospect, and during my busy workdays I can only glimpse at obvious birds.

Along the lawn of south Lake, among the Canada Geese between Duck and Three Sisters islands, the two Snow Geese are residing. Looks like they are comfortable among likewise geese and will spend Winter here.

A good distance northwest at Upper Pool,I spotted a pair of Wood ducks. There's obviously more but I took for granted this assumption.

Prospect Lake fine mornin

Good offerings this morning on my late run around the LAKE.Considering the lake doesn't get alot of winter variety, i thought this morning had a good waterfowl run.

First the latest on the juvenile SNOW GEESE that's been hanging around. Both kids were spotted on the south shore just West of Duck Island .That particular spot is marked by a stone pentagonal platform. In front of the rare geese, a PIED BILLED GREBE dove.

With ducks i found among the usual, three species to note . Two pairs of HOODED MERGANSER and AMERICAN WIGEON were spotted, at Lake center and West Island respectively. Then the lingering RINGNECKED DUCK inside Three sisters Islands added to the variety. I got a text from Michele Dreger of a possible Greenwinged Teal later but it was not re found by her walk group.

Upland at the feeders for a change of scenery, the feeders were active. A hit and run RED BREASTED NUTHATCH kept a frenetic pace hitting those feeders; its friends kept a slower pace, the WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH,TITMOUSE, BLACK CAPPED CHICKADEE, and a great looking RED BELLIED WOODPECKER male on the suet cage. A few RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS joined while 6 AMERICAN GOLDFINCH stuck to the thistle feeder.

PP snow

Prospect lake juvenile snow geese pair on south shore just west of Duck island. Pentagonal stone lookout platform site.also lake pied billed grebe, ringncked duck, pairs hooded mergansers n American wigeon

Hi Peter,

As per your request, here are two photos of the Common Goldeneye that I took yesterday at Bush Terminal pier park

Gus

Snow Geese hanging about

The pair of Juvenile SNOW GEESE continue to hang around, seen this late morning among the horde of Canada Geese on the ballfields of western Long meadow. A few Canada took swipes at one of the Snows.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden short birding walks

From leader Bradley Klein , monthly bird winter walks

http://www.bbg.org/visit/event/winter_nature_walks_with_brad_klein_Jan2017

From Bradley

"Greetings. I lead a monthly nature walk for the BBG and would be delighted if the club was willing to promote. It's a general nature walk and the birders are often beginners. We can always use veterans willing to help others 'get on' birds, share binoculars, or even bring an extra pair! January walk is this Sunday."

Waterfowl Count

A week from this Sunday the Waterfowl count sponsored by the NYState Ornithological Association begins on January 15th for a week time frame. The target date is January 15th.

I need a leader to count the waterfowl of Prospect Park and Greenwood Cemetery. Also if that person is willing , also Bush Terminal Park ( though I will ask the regional Compiler for permission and will get back to the birder).

I am on the coast of south Brooklyn and Breezy /Rockaway with all day adventuring ( 6 miles walking likely )

Please email me offline if interested. either as Prospect /GWC leader  or with me.
