Fwd: eBird Report - Prospect Park--Feeders, Jan 30, 2018

IN an otherwise subpar winter year for Prospect feeders, even the sight of 26 RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS and 7 NORTHERN CARDINAL  rouses attention.

With no rarities so far , in what is an off year , enjoyment of the feeder birds comes in the realm of little moments, like seeing a large flock of blackbirds that even Ebird questioned me for the number reported. ( Believe me , Ebird, I KNOW BLACKBIRDS)

Having all those cardinals, a RED BELLIED WOODPECKER,  and a WHITE BREASTED NUTHATCH adds "suspense".

I'm waiting for the Groundhog to tell me 6 more weeks of winter is forthcoming...I got plenty of seed left.

BBC photo members night

This event was recently posted on the Brooklyn BIrd Club website for anyone interested participating.

http://brooklynbirdclub.org/event/members-photo-night/

Open for business lake

Most of Prospect Lake opened Sunday thanks to the warm melt and that attracts duck business.

As multiple 140 plus NORTHERN SHOVELERS scattered about on Prospect Lake, I spotted a drake RED BREASTED MERGANSER in the middle, an uncommon species here in Prospect.Though a common winter offshore species, this merganser is quite welcomed here at the Lake. That's the wonder of a lake that's not completely frozen:it brings in the ducks.

Watchful eyes

Upon entering the spot where the Prospect feeders are viewed, nary a bird was seen. Why? Hmm. If a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK watches from above,it would be a good reason.

Elyse Taylor alerted us to the adult hawk. A Northern Cardinal scolded the ignorant hawk and a variety of House Finches fluttered about the adult Sharpie but their noise didn't make it budge.

On my way to the feeders I ran into Steve and Heidi Nanz at Well Drive . While in discussion with them,Heidi spotted an EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH. It was a first for Steve and he wound up photographing several of the species adjacent to the shipping containers.

The lake is still melting but I was able to pick out a hen BUFFLEHEAD within the RUDDY DUCK flock. The Nanz s told me they saw the Drake WOOD DUCK
Other than 60+ NORTHERN SHOVELERS and a small contingent of ordinary gulls,it's quiet there at the lake.

Migratory Birds Need Your Help: Support the MBTA!

Dear Peter,

Congress and the Department of the Interior are proposing to severely undermine one of our nation's strongest bird conservation laws, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The House Committee on Natural Resources has included an amendment in the Energy Bill, H.R. 4239, and the Department of the Interior has issued a new policy directive that would absolve oil and gas companies from responsibility for bird deaths in oil pits, on power lines, and from other energy-related infrastructure.

Please take action today and tell Congress and the Administration to fight for migratory birds and oppose changes to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Thank you,

Steve Holmer
Vice President of Policy

widening waters

The open water spot on the western shoreline of Prospect Lake has widened abit and this is all right for ducks.

Last night when I passed by , I counted 83 NORTHERN SHOVELERS and 14 American coots.Today I see the drake WOOD DUCK happily doing its wading routine.A number of gulls were on the ice nearby but being busy today working I had no time to check them out as usual.

Mega gull at Prospect Lake

Master birder Sean Sime pulled out a really good gull ,a mega find for Prospect this early afternoon with MEW/COMMON GULL.

Initially identified as Common the European subspecies it's now believed by Sean to be the northwestern North American subspecies.

The Mew Gull hung out in the mostly Ringbilleds gull flock ~200 ft from the western shoreline of Prospect Lake. It stayed there for about an hour affording excellent looks for the small flash mob . This species is very likely Prospects first record.

To distinguish the Mew from likewise Ringbilleds, look at the thinner darker pale yellow bill with no ring band. Also there's a characteristic white tertial patch on its back..

The gull flew out about 220.

See the previous post of the bird on Twitter link. Mike Yuan photo

A spate of rare gulls

Two ICELAND GULLS outnumbered a single BLACK HEADED GULL along Brooklyn's north- northwestern shore.

The BLACK HEADED GULL put in its appearance at Gull hotspot pier Veterans pier ( which yesterday was Mew turf). It helps having the Owls Head sewage treatment center there.Zach Weinstein observed the rarity.

Then the double report of ICELAND GULLS to the north. One was found at Brooklyn Army Terminal pier; the second Iceland is in the Williamsburg section ,at the end of North 3rd Street,a continuing bird. See the Ebird trax for the observers.

Addendum:  There was apparently a third ( or maybe the same one) seen at River Ave in the Greenpoint /Williamsburgh area, on the water rocks, a likely 1st year bird , observed by Joe Girgente who posted the photos on the facebook closed group North American Gulls

I observed and photographed a black-headed gull at Veterans Memorial Pier
this afternoon. I’ll upload photos to eBird later. It flew off about 30
minutes ago and has not returned. I haven’t found anything i’d Be
comfortable calling a Mew Gull.

Mew gull details

Mew Gull (Larus canus) (1)

- Comments: "Probably returning Brachrhynchus-smaller and darker backed than RBGU-small bill greenish yellow bill with yellow tip and slight blackish smudging 3/4 toward bill end-huge tertial crescents and mirrors on P9 and P10-photos to follow"

A Mew Gull comes back

Renown Mew Gull "whisperer"  Shane Blodgett has found yet again MEW GULL along the southwestern shores of Brooklyn. The bird ventured to Veterans Pier that this blog covers at its extreme range :)

First spotted 200 yards south of the Bay Ridge gull spot Veterans Pier ( at the terminus of Bay Ridge avenue), the MEW GULL briefly landed on the pier before taking off southwesterly towards Staten Island. Its possible it went towards Caesar's Bay Gravesend area.

Shane believes its the same gull he had a year or two ago ( I forget when) ....the western North American form.

Hawks atop Lookout

Two different species hawks perched at the perimeter of Butterfly Meadow while we proceeded with our task clearing snow.

The first one, a juvenile likely female COOPERS HAWK stood out prominently by the Maryland Monument top steps. Then a short time later, we found the immature RED TAILED HAWK on the west slope, the bird seeing us and flying right over our work truck, to perch in the big Sweetgum Tree. At least we had some excitement this morning.

Iceland gulls at BBrP

From Doug Gochfelds
There were two very handsome juvenile Iceland Gulls roosting at Brooklyn Bridge Park this evening. On the floating docks viewable from Pier 5, about 45 minutes after sunset. There is enough light there to see gulls reasonably well at night, and there were over 2,000 RBGU. Also 1 COGO there, which strikes me as unusual for the park.

Doug Gochfeld and Sean Sime Present: Victory at Sea: Offshore in the Age of Big Data

BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY, CENTRAL BRANCH AT GRAND ARMY PLAZA
January 16 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join pelagic junkies Doug Gochfeld and Sean Sime as they discuss how Brooklyn became the "go deep or go home" pelagic mecca and how analyzing seabird data Atlantic-wide has paid immediate dividends in NY waters.

Since the 1970's New York based pelagics have evolved from "Let's go offshore" trips to nowhere to targeted strikes overlaying sea surface temperature, wind, and chlorophyll charts in concert with our ever increasing knowledge of seasonal bird movements. With each new trip unknowns are becoming knowns.

Dark-eyed Junco "Junco hyemalis" | Boreal Songbird Initiative

https://www.borealbirds.org/bird/dark-eyed-junco

I haven't seen much of this species around and it's a shame as its old name "Snowbird" should be synonymous with our snow ground cover. The current absence of Prospect Chickadees, titmice and juncos- common winter species - makes our winter birding boring.

Ask yourself this: what would life be without these creatures, when the forest goes quiet?  Support your conservation goals to increase and preserve habitats, critical stopover sites, and resolve unchecked development.

Here are some organizations to keep in mind

American Bird Conservancy

Boreal Birds Initiative https://www.borealbirds.org

National Audubon Society

Nature Conservancy

And various land trusts

Remember:   National Geographic this year call it "The Year of The Bird" , on the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act
( More on this on another post)

Where can the ducks and gulls go?

Less than .01 percent of Prospect Lake is open and it's a tight squeeze for the present occupants

Looks like the Mute Swan staying quiet about the situation.

The Snowy Owl Wars? | Donna L. Cole

http://www.annapoliscreative.com/snowy-owl-wars/

An excellent article in the above link  as there has been unethical misbehaving by a number of folks. Chasing (oftentimes flushing them when depleted of energy leading to  starvation ) these owls or any owl and revealing roosting owls trees, etc is detrimental and impacts the owls life and death status during hungry and harsh winters. Telling the world of an owl location oftentimes invites bad influences. Be smart and care about the owls health, don't go public.

Do follow the ABA code of ethics!! ( Link on my side bar <<=====)
  I SERIOUSLY DO.

Hi Peter,
Happy New Year!

Today, there were lots of ducks in the air, but very few were coming down to the open hole that's left. Perhaps, they were looking for a less crowded water hole.
In addition, I noticed a hight flying great blue heron, it head South. There were very few hawks around. I only saw what looked like a Merlin for a brief second.
The feeders had very little action.

While seated waiting for some action by the water hole I noticed a seagull with what appeared to be a fishing lure. Once the bird came back around I was able to take this shot. I was amazed this is my very first tagged seagull, ever.
Later, these two Canada geese came down to the water hole also. They were here last winter. I reported them last year.

Best regards,
Gregory Beltre

Frigid cold and icy grip this Friday into Saturday

I don't have to say without hesitation that with the impending icy deep freeze this weekend how dangerous that presents to outdoor folks as Saturday is supposed to be a high temperature of only 11 degrees but a windchill real feel of MINUS 14 !

These conditions are prime for hypothermia and frostbite. If its not worth it, try to stay indoors. Sunday is supposed to be a little "balmier" but winds will die down

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/new-york-ny/10017/weekend-weather/349727

In any case for the weekend and anytime in winter when you are birding ( and go with friend(s) if possible) Here are the facts and safety tips on hypothermia and frostbite from the following link.

( and get those hand  & feet warmers like "Hot Hands" good for 10 hrs warmth)

Remember, BE SAFE!

Prospects New Year's boids

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
     And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
     And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,
     For auld lang syne.
     We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
     For auld lang syne.
At 8 degrees and 9 am would intimidated birders to forget about birding outdoors this morning in Prospect Park. Who would want to bear one of the coldest days ,frigid fingers and breathing in Arctic air? Well don't tell that to 12 brave souls who came on the traditional New Year's day walk; after all we have to celebrate the joy of birding and the promises of new year hopes and keep up with new and old acquaintances.

Even with 31 species recorded, several birds were quality species. The group found the four SNOW GEESE along the ballfields northern snow fence ( appropriately); the poor things looked frigid, immovable even as we approached the fence.

A scan of Upper Pool found a large CANADA GOOSE flock, most them heads tucked in,half asleep with wary eyes towards us,trying to forget it's really cold. However the lack there of,a pair of WOOD DUCKS snuggled in the corner, alert when we passed by.

After a quiet Ravine, the northeast corner of the Nethermead came through with hot, well warm action. In the corner the iconic Osage Orange tree stands,BROWN CREEPER,YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER,MERLIN & RED TAILED HAWK were spotted. At Center Drive's hard curve, the large important Sweetgum tree above and ground level attracted MOURNING DOVE,WHITE THROATED SPARROWS,DARK EYED JUNCOS & RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS.

The feeders continued to remain below average observing but it's the new year and there's hope. House Finches remain dominant.

Along the way as the group dissipated,a few more winter hardies. HERMIT THRUSH,SWAMP SPARROW & RED BELLIED WOODPECKER added to our burgeoning new year list.

The first day of the year is not about starting off a big year,or trying to get a head start .It's about appreciating life, reinvigorating old and creating new acquaintances, and being glad we made it to another year. It's important to not get stressed out chasing stuff but rather enjoy the fun part of birding and the discoveries we will make while we experience the joy of birding with friends new and old alike.

Happy New Year to all and the best of 2018 to you.

Thanks Chris Laskowski compiling list

Thanks Peter for leading a fun day of birding.  Rob emailed that he had 2 Mockingbirds by LeFrak.
