It seemed like slim pickings today as I took my walk. Perhaps it was the harsh light. But running into Dennis inaugural BBC walk it was the same sentiment except for one cool rare bird he reported.
The definite highlight reported by Dennis was a Boat-tailes Grackle heard then seen as a flyover. This is a rare sighting; more common in the salt marshes, finding one inaa interior site like Prospect Park is news. I had one in Prospect easily 25 years ago. Today's bird was seen at the lake southern shore.
The other nice highlight was a flyover Glossy Ibis. We expect at least several spring reports of this species. ( It would be fantastic to see one perched)
In the Lake both Red throated Loon and Common Merganser continue their long presence. Overhead two Common Loons were spotted flying, breeding plumage birds heading north. Pied Billes Grebe and lots of Ruddy Ducks abound ( I counted 53). Hooded Merganser and Wood Duck are other notable waterbirds in the Lake.
Otherwise there isn't aload of passerines around. That is ,the usual high number of Palm Warblers we expect these days was just one today.
Nevertheless 65 species in prospect is pretty good despite the low numbers .
