We enjoyed the sunny, slightly cool day at Green-Wood Cemetery. We managed to see 41 species of birds overall. Highlights included two American Woodcocks, the first pursued by a somewhat determined but unsuccessful Red-tailed Hawk, and a male Eastern Bluebird fly-catching and vocalizing. Many thanks to all our participants and especially to Kathy Toomey.

Birding briefs

 A long day with the family leaf peeping in Jersey so just. A few briefs after posting the evening Grosbeak info.

-an American Bittern was reported perched in a tree at Bush Terminal Pier Park

Late birds reported includes scarlet tanager, ovenbird, cape may warbler, ruby throated hummingbird in prospect,greenwood cemetery ,owls head park and Brooklyn bridge park.

- Comments: "The irruption is here! Have been keeping an eye out the past couple of weeks as a wave of birds has moved south through New England and now down into the Mid-Atlantic states. Thought I heard EVGR 'jeer' calls several times this week near the Cemetery but didn't manage a recording or get visual confirmation. A few other eBirders noted possible heard-only birds this week too. Finally saw a single bird rocketing out of the Cemetery around 11:30am. Top-heavy, bulky-bodied, dark-headed, electric yellow and jet black finch (male, evidently). Black tail, white secondaries. Flew directly overhead and off to the north across the Nethermead. Sighting was brief, no vocalization, but there aren't really any similarly patterned or structured birds that would be a source of ID confusion. Ran into Forrest W. and Eleanor later, and they'd also observed a probable EVGR earlier in the day with Mike E."

Nethermead vespers

The western Nethermead transformed into a sparrow hotspot that showcased a variety of species that included a remarkable 4 Vesper Sparrows. The location is perfectly suited for the emberizae genera.

The early morning report of Vesper Sparrows together would intrigue birders as this is a typically rare species,only most times occuring in Octobers. It likes the open spaces so today's birders were treated to generous views.

 Along the grass edges Pine and Blackpoll warblers mingled with the Chipping and White throated sparrows. I found a Winter Wren on the fence at the  meadow donor trees at the far west corner .

City of Forest Volunteer event past saturday

 On Saturday October 15th , over 95 volunteers answered the call to crib a desire line and trail for  erosion, mulch woodland trails and remove Norway and sycamore maples in the northwest sector of lower Lookout Hill ..A great job by all. and thanks for their help in restoring Prospect Park habitats

With the threat of rain on a relatively warm, somewhat windy and generally overcast day we set out in search. Thankfully the rain held off until after after our bird walk was completed. Highlights included lingering warblers and Chimney Swifts, plus one each of Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Scarlet Tanager. Perhaps most notable of all was a roosting Common Nighthawk in a tall horse chestnut tree at the north end of the vale. Meanwhile, the sparrows may have been at least slightly subdued by a scrutinizing sparrow hawk (American Kestrel) that made an unsuccessful swipe at a small flock of mixed sparrows on the fenced-in ballfield.

A timely coffee break

I was working at the Bartel Park entrance when I opened my what App and saw Carl B's tweet. He is observing a Lark Sparrow, a rarity for the park.It was very near my usual coffee break so it's a timely coincidence.

After my Connecticut Muffin visit-- I was in no rush--its head on for ball field 2. This field along with field 3 has been hot lately. When I arrived at field 2 outfield I ran into Joshua who said the Lark Sparrow was hanging around  1st base. Two other birders staked out their spots at the chain link fence.It only took a moment to find my prize.

At the infield edge of the 2nd baseman spot, the Lark Sparrow fed upon grasses near a wooden stake. But patience is required until soon the bird was out in the open . Just a beautiful sparrow to behold.

The other beauty among sparrows today is Lincolns Sparrow. I found one at northwest Nethermead, inside the donor grove ( there's 3) fence enclosure closest to Lookout Hill. Perfectly perched in the fence, this adult bird with beautiful buff ochre breast color through streaks got to me.

Sparrows are in.They're pretty much everywhere. Katie C for example today found a Vesper Sparrow at the Peninsula Sumac grove grassy edges. So I presume you get the idea.

Hi Peter,
today's walk began w/ a dumped-duck rescue.  Phil Hore noticed 3 baby domestic ducks clearly in distress, peeping incessantly on the path in by Vanderbilt Playground.  Dennis and Terri went in search of a cardboard box to put them in, and i called Marty who said she'd be right there.  While we waited i fed them my breakfast sandwich to keep them from wandering away.  passers by were incredibly respectful, especially the dog walkers.   Dennis returned first w/ a box and we scooped up the poor babies and had them waiting for Marty when she arrived.  hopefully they find a good home!
on to birds!  we saw the Lark Sparrow by the ballfields.  Dan found us a YB cuckoo by Fallkill falls and we scared some poor women who was just minding her own business on a bend as we crowded around her.  Oops...  many Common Nighthawks still flying in the daylight.  i guess it's a thing this time of year.

we had a visitor from Scotland today for whom most of the birds were lifers, and that's always rewarding.

Sometimes its a little bit of luck

In the course of birding,sometimes you get lucky:Not just seeing the good bird but getting a very close look as well. Luck means being in the right place at the right time and looking in the right direction.

That lucky charm for me was the Vesper Sparrow. I stood in the shade of a tree while facing the chain link fence that closed off Prospects ball field 2 & 3. I watched chipping sparrows in different spots , a golden crowned kinglet, a palm warbler but right in fronts of me perched low in the fence for 5 seconds I say was a sparrow with a bright huge white eye ring: the Vesper. It was quick, and soon it was gone ,flying into the outfield. I just was lucky looking that way.

In the next whole hour, I was fortunate, with birding tips to see a young Tennessee Warbler and Eastern Blue bird; thanks to rob Bate and Terry Kim for the sightings. The bluebird perched on  field 2s chain link (1st base side) and the wooden stakes inside.

I don't bird long days much but a few hours with a few great birds is satisfactory for me.

Later information from Ryan M confirmed the Vesper staying put along with Clay colored Sparrow in fields 2/3.

Be sure also to check the island enclosures donor tree sections at Northwest nethermead. Acting on Robs tip, I found magnolia warbler, House wren and blue headed vireo in there. Ill be checking them out from time to time.

Sundays cemetery gems

Greenwood cemetery had the good day compared to Prospect with several great birds. Its best when theres not many people around on this crisp sunny day.

For beginners, a Yellow breasted chat is a good one. This reclusive species was spotted by the Grassy Path near Meadow Ave, hiding  in an Euonymous bush.

Following up the chat,  a Blue Grosbeak surfaced on the Cemetery's west border, on Maple Ave just before Spruce Ave. Another Blue Grosbeak showed  in the Dellwater where also Purple Finch male hung look out. The aeeds inside the dellwater is laden with Gold finches and a birder mentioned seeing Wilsons warbler.

Very close by adjacent to the Tunnel at 4th/ 36th st entrance, an Eastern Meadow lark appeared.

Prospect had its own rarity, a Clay colored Sparrow. One was found on the Ball fields at field 2 and 3 along the chain link fence. Add Eastern Bluebird, two birds seen here as well using the fence as a perch.

Sparrowy Locust Grove

Looking to relax the day after coming home on a long drive, I simply wanted to get out and bird. Acting on a tweet yesterday to get motivated I decided to try my luck for Greenwoods Lark Sparrow.

Locust Grove on the GWC map is bordered by Southwood,Locust and Vale Avenues. It has paths named after the seasons that I think is pretty cool. I started my entry on the Summer Path where purportedly the Lark Sparrow was.Some sparrows were on the slope --among them a cool looking juvenile White crowned Sparrow with Songs.

 At the junction of Summer and Spring paths there was an abundance of sparrows hiding in the slope edges and crypt wall. Hence I turned about and waited. The patience for the next half hour produced Lincoln, Field, Chipping and White-throated sparrows , the latter three in single number each feeding above the short wall behind the bench. Just delightful. Later on the wall I leaned against, several Savannah sparrows perched on that wall.

In all at Locust Grove,I counted eight species sparrows, adding Juncos.

 A number of flickers and robins and always the favorite Blue Jay added quaint fall moments.

At Dellwater,  though the sun glare was too strong for me to see, a Summer Tanager became a good catch of the day by birders stationed there. In the weeds inside the pond Goldfinches and maybe one or two Indigo Bunting continued feeding. I was happy to see ruby crowned kinglet on the ground adding to my personal list Golden crowned seen earlier on Cypress Ave.

It was a perfect birding day meeting friends and other acquaintances on this gorgeous autumn day.

Fridays goodies

After several days leaf peeping in the Catskills, I found out that a couple of good birds were reported in Prospect Park and greenwood cemetery.

Starting with Prospect, one location yielded two goodies. A Clay colored Sparrow followed by Blue Grosbeak were found in the Sparrow bowl, the vale between the Picnic and Tennis Houses. The sparrow perched in birches at the left upper corner.

Likewise with two goodies of its own, Greenwood in the same general area gave up continuing Dickcissel and a welcomed Lark Sparrow. Look for the Dickcissel in the weedy patch at Dellwater; for the Lark Sparrow , head north from Crescent water to Southwood Ave by the new mauseleum .

greenwood waters

Two notables reported at Greenwood Cemetery sister ponds would grab attention on another wet day.

The Clay colored sparrow continues, seen at the Niblo crypt next to Crescent Water.

A short distance away , at Dellwater, a birder reported a Dickcissel. It's a good weedy patch over there ,just perfect for the sparrows.
