Christmas Greetings

The Kingsboider wishes all Merry Christmas and festive joy . As the old scriptural passage says," Peace on Earth, good will to all men and women".

The wreath's circular shape and its evergreen make the wreath a representation of eternal life. It is also a representation of faith as Christians in Europe placed a candle in the wreath to symbolize the light of the world who has come ,Jesus.

Subject: Save Community Composting!

Dear Peter,

The environmental benefits of recycling food scraps and plant waste into nutrient-rich soil are undeniable. Composting contributes substantially to the health of our urban environment; it simultaneously mitigates food waste from landfills and significantly reduces the greenhouse gasses waste emits, like methane.

In New York City, community composting programs—programs funded by the NYC Community Compost Project, run by GrowNYC and Green-Wood partners Big Reuse and Earth Matter—are what makes this process possible. They collect food scraps (more than 8 million pounds annually!), operate large composting sites, distribute compost, and provide public education.

But the resources composting programs rely on are in the crosshairs. It was announced in Mayor Adams' latest budget for 2024 that funding for NYC Community Composting is slated to be slashed

Green-Wood not only supports these composting programs but depends on them to sustainably manage wood waste that is produced from our annual tree maintenance. We produce over 1 million pounds of wood chips each year. This carbon-rich material is necessary in the composting process to balance the nitrogen-rich food scraps and speed up the process of decomposition. We know firsthand how devastating the loss of these programs will be to the community.

That's why we're signing GrowNYC's petition to support continued funding for NYC community composting—and we urge you to do the same. Please click here to add your support!

Thank you,

Today's CBC short news

Today's kings County Christmas count had a very good number of 136 species.

Prospect had 57 species at orange crowned Warbler and red shouldered hawk the top birds;neighboring Greenwood cemetery despite having only 42 species boasted 6 saves including a very late black throated green warbler.

I should be getting the numbers maybe early next week from the compiler.

Posted on Facebook

The Brooklyn Christmas Bird Count happened today and unofficially set a record species count of 135! Highlights are as followed:

-THREE separate Ash-Throated Flycatchers

-First Wild Turkey on the count

-Black-throated Green Warbler

-Short-eared Owl

-Lark Sparrow

-About a dozen Orange-crowned Warblers (record high)

-Unknown flock of dowitchers

-Virginia and Clapper Rails

Misses on the count included Tufted Titmouse (first ever I believe) and Brown-headed Cowbird. Gulling also was worse this year due to the warm weather. Thanks for everyone who participated!

Today is the Christmas Bird count 124 years young

Kings County participates in the 124th  count. Of many teams I'm covering for so many years south Prospect Park.

This great event as described online borne to protest the side hunts before 1900

" The CBC began on Christmas Day, 1900. Previously, many families would have Christmas hunting competitions — known as side hunts — to see who could kill the most birds. Frank Chapman, an early Audubon officer, wanted to offer an alternative."

Chapman wound up becoming the curator directir of the American museum natural history bird exhibitions.

Little parks ,big things

Three miles roughly seperate Owls Head and Brooklyn Bridge Park on Brooklyn's west coast.Yet both yield big sightings from time to time.

Owls Head continues to host an Ash-throated Flycatcher. From details the Flycatcher hangs out along the path that parallels the Belt Parkway, near the dog run.

Mean while to the north at Brooklyn Bridge Park two quality gulls were reported at Pier 1 pilings. A known winter roost, this late afternoon Both a juvenile Iceland Gull and an adult Lesser black backed Gull are good finds.

Dear Brooklyn Bird Club member,

The annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is the nation's longest-running community science bird project, where birders across the continent conduct a bird census that helps Audubon and other organizations assess the health of bird populations and guide conservation actions. This year's count will be held Saturday, December 16th.

https://www.audubon.org/ conservation/science/ christmas-bird-count

The Brooklyn CBC count circle is made up from 12 different count sectors that includes parks, cemeteries, and significant coastline on the bay and the ocean, and there is a team for all skill and commitment levels. Grab your binoculars and come out and join us.

Please contact the Teams Organizer, Bobbi Manian, to join a team.  The cut-off for team registration is December 13th.
Teams organizer: Bobbi Manian roberta.manian@gmail.com
Compilers: Chris Laskowski celaskowski@yahoo.com; Mike Yuan mjyuan@gmail.com

Compilation Dinner: Pot-luck dinner and a live compilation of the day's sightings will be held for participants at the Prospect Park Picnic House.

Note: Some teams begin at 7:30 or earlier. Plan for 4-8 hours of birding. Rain or shine.

A special gull for brooklyn

With a rare gull coming down the Hudson River ,Enrico L from his NYC spot reported a Black legged Kittiwake. Even better the bird landed in Brooklyn waters.

And that Brooklyn spot happened to be Veterans pier. One of the best gull roosts around, Veterans pier near Owls head park hosted the kittiwake offshore. Seen in the distance first north of the pier, it ventured closer before seen on a flyby at Bush Terminal Park; then it flew back to Veterans.

A mostly pelagic gull, seeing a Kittiwake in close confined NYC Waters is indeed special. Too bad most of us have to work.

Gotcha Ash-throated !

Thanks to Rob J who during my family relaxation sitting at a bench at Greenwood Cemetery s Crescent Water ,alerting me to the bird, I was able to find a good bird found by Michael S.

Funny thing while I was birding Dellwater as my mom and sister sat at Crescent, Rob J and I met. Rob showed me a photo of a Eastern Bluebird sitting on a section sign with an Ash throated Flycatcher seen over a week ago. So when I rejoined my family after seeing a bathing Red tailed Hawks in Dellwater, Rob came back alerting me of the ash throated.

So natch I went for it. Parking at Sylvan water at the bottom, the bird was actually on the rise ,southwestern ridge of Sylvan . There i found Michael S who took me to the bird spot. It was posing nicely within low colorful oak leaves. A opportunity turns into reality for this autumn prize with plenty of charitable help. Thanks!

Quiet Saturday

Nothing fantastic reported today but for some birders, something is better than nothing.

At Greenwood Cemetery Dellwater, 7 Purple Finches were reported, all females except one.

I visited Governor's island today. During my time sauntering I ran into a birder named Loyan who alerted me about two Eastern Meadowlarks on Fort Jay's eastern slope area. I lucked out looking for them. πŸ˜•

I did get to see Ruby crowned kinglet, winter wren and a low fly out of a Sharpshinned Hawk in The Hills section. A lovely place to  visit.

Hi Peter,

It was an absolutely gorgeous day at Green-Wood, making for a quite enjoyable day though not super birdy. We had an extra large group today, and I'm so appreciative of Ryan Goldberg, Michele T, Radka, Jeremy and the many others that helped manage and spot at the times we became almost 2 groups: front and back. Winds haven't been favorable to blow in the next round of migrants, it seems, but there were some life birds in the group, which included some new birders, and made me happy! Highlights were field sparrows in 2 locations, a Belted Kingfisher, an awkwardly-posing Great Blue Heron, Towhees and a few Purple Finches on Dell. For the smaller group who continued past the 'ending' time, we had Eastern Bluebirds on Morse Monument.  Thank you for believing I could manage this! Birding and leading at the same time is genuinely HARD. Here is the list, and the link to the ebird list; if anyone asks, i'm happy to share:

Canada Goose
Rock Pigeon
Mourning Dove
Herring Gull
Ring-billed Gull
Great Blue Heron (not sure if there is someone to report this to, but a non-BBC person at Sylvan approached the bird dangerously close, even with us yelling to stop; it flew into the big tree across and seemed to be trying to cool off, folding its wings inward and doing gular fluttering - which i just googled BTW)

Prospects Henslow Sparrow records

Well, the last time a Henslows Sparrow appeared in Prospect Park ,you have to go back 60 years!

October 10th,1963 is the date. A very long time. Kudos to Michelle and Jeremy for their spectacular find.

It's the 7th record.

Prospect scores sparrowy Big

The Prospect ballfields of west Long Meadow is in my opinion the best sparrow spot in the park. Those fences do wonders attracting  sparrows and this afternoon it scored big with HENSLOWS SPARROW.

Give credit to Michelle Truong and Jeremy Nadel in possibly finding the first HENSLOWS in Prospect in decades ( I'll check later)

The bird was cooperatively seen along the path between fields 4&5 a short walk from the dog beaxh.. A Vesper Sparrow was also seen in field 5.

Over at Greenwoods Janet's Meadow ( Valley Water) the LARK SPARROW resurfaced if the same one a week ago.

If you wanna chat, that's around too. In Sunset Park along 41st Street between 5th and 6th aves, a YELLOW BREASTED CHAT popped in view in one of the slope shrubs if I recalled the landscape  there.

Indian Summer magic occurred today.
