Bird then flew towards pier and landed briefly behind some cars. Was able to have nice views from car with binoculars until it landed. I grabbed my camera for photos but bird flew to cove north of pier where it seems that it was seen yesterday and then flew out to the north. Conditions were poor with blustery cold winds. However, bird was easy to pick out from crowd due to black terminal band and black-tipped ivory bill, seen very well as it flew to lot. I tried and failed to get photos diagnostic photos as it flew from the lot.  Beak looked smaller than ring-billed but hard to judge when it was by itself on lot. Other ID points checked out, however."

I'm trying to come up with something this could more plausibly be than a Nashville for the weather and season but without luck. I was heading for the Conover St. entrance to the Waterfront Garden Park, across from the Food Bazaar exit, when a thin "seep" call note caught my attention. Just above in the small oak tree on the edge of the street I immediately saw this warbler. I only had it in my binoculars for a few seconds before it moved within the tree and I decided photos might be more fruitful. To my eye you can see in all of these photographs a hint of the russet/red crown patch of a Nashville. However you can also see what looks like a hint of wingbars, which is less expected. The bird then dropped down amongst the construction materials that are now collected in the parking, lot on the other side of the fence, and I was unable to refind !
 it."

Either missed or overlooked when I walked east through the park; on my return through about half an hour later found standing in front of the large guano-stained bollard at the far end of the westernmost derelict pier (this is the pier which invariably has the largest collection of sitting gulls). The bird promptly sat or lay down on its belly and was more or less obscured by other standing gulls, but it is clearly larger than Herring and smaller than Greater Black-backed, both of which were present (Herring is visible beyond, in one of these poor photos). Bill bicolored, wingtips white."

Seymour (Sy) Schiff passed away on Thursday, January 14, at the age of 93. I learned this from his dear friend Joe Giunta, who had been in touch with Sy regularly and made inquiries when he couldn't be reached. I understand that a service has already been held, but I will discuss with Joe how we birders might join in honoring him.

From his years writing the Kingbird seasonal reports for New York City and Long Island, to his gentlemanly and erudite omnipresence around Jones Beach, to his more wide-ranging birding adventures later in life in Joe's company, Sy touched New York's birding community deeply. He will be missed deeply by many, many people.

I know that Sy saw at least 402 species of birds in New York State, and just this morning I was thinking of encouraging and helping him to try for the Spotted Towhee, very near his home in Baldwin. That will never happen, but I will spend some time tonight with my memories of many birds I saw with Sy.

- Comments: "Presumptive, as only seen some 100 yards overhead above the Ikea parking lot. White-winged gull overall sandy/ivory colored, palest at the flight feathers. Tips of wings without markings. Impression of size smaller than Herring Gull and more round-bodied, broad-winged and chunky than much more angular and buoyant Ring-billed. Particularly noted impression that wings seemed short and bird rather barrel chested; possibly the former simply an observational effect of the lack of any markings at the wingtips. Only plausible confusion would be with Glaucous Gull, but this bird did not seem in any way sufficiently massive. Nonetheless this identification is based largely on impression of size, which can certainly be difficult to judge on a solitary flying individual."

Grasslands are the fastest disappearing habitat in the U.S. and grassland birds are disappearing right along with their habitats. We have lost 700 million grassland birds in the U.S. and Canada over the last 50 years. Short-eared owls, Northern harriers, Upland sandpipers, Eastern meadowlarks, and other iconic bird species are vanishing from rural landscapes at an alarming rate. Learn about these amazing grassland birds and find out more about what Grassland Bird Trust (GBT) is doing to reverse that trend!

GBT has conserved or helped conserve over 250 acres of critical habitat in upstate New York. Learn about their work with renewable energy companies on innovative new projects to conserve more land. GBT is also spearheading regional efforts to form a grassland coalition that will greatly increase the scale and pace of grassland bird conservation across the eastern U.S.

Join us and discover how you can be a part of this pivotal conservation movement!

Laurie LaFond

Laurie LaFond is the founder and Executive Director of Grassland Bird Trust (formerly Friends of the IBA). She has led GBT's growth into a respected land trust conserving critical habitat for endangered, threatened, and rapidly declining grassland birds. Laurie initiated and co-leads GBT's efforts to build regional and national coalitions that will vastly increase the pace and scale of grassland bird conservation across the U.S. She is also developing innovative partnerships with renewable energy companies to conserve more land, fund stewardship and minimize impact on grassland birds. LaFond holds a B.S. in Non-Profit Administration and an A.A. in Communications. She has extensive experience in organizational development, fundraising, community development, and grassland bird conservation.

Paloma Spina

Paloma Spina, Board Member and Coalition Co-Coordinator for GBT, is an environmental engineer currently working for Anchor QEA, a consulting firm specializing in environmental remediation. She started developing a passion for habitat restoration when working on a conservation project in the cloud forest of Honduras. Paloma regularly works on a variety of fundraising and development projects for GBT. She is passionate about the organization's mission and is highly invested in building a grassland coalition with GBT's Executive Director Laurie LaFond and other partners. Ms. Spina holds a B.S. in Environmental Engineering and a B.S. in Earth Science from Cornell University.

Prospect sightings

The little moments matter in winter birding. When it's slower pace, you appreciate beauty wherever it's found.

Dan Smith gave me a heads up on Mergansers found by Radka. Told that Duck Island was the spot,I went over there. And it wasn't long before I found two Drake HOODED MERGANSERS hiding under a snag limbs spread out over the water like a canopy. They are such handsome ducks.

Add a BUFFLEHEAD as well. With a similar white head spot,I was surprised to see a Drake on Upper Pool during my lunch stop. It was nice to see rare timing for this duck at this pond; it's been a long while since my last Upper Pool Buffie observation.

At the feeders, the GRAY CATBIRD didn't want to leave the suet feeder. It must be hungry like heck.

I read an alert of BLACK VULTURE mid-afternoon. The report mention a flyover over Lookout Hill; another birder saw it over the Nethermead, heading west.

Outside Prospect, the ICELAND GULL reappeared at Bush Terminal Pier Park middle jetty cove.

And last COMMON REDPOLLs stay true to Greenwood Cemetery Dell Ave.

Western brooklyn piers gull hotspots

Brooklyn's western piers are the goto gull hotspots evident today by two white winged gull rarities.

At the Valentino pier (65th st) a GLAUCOUS gull landed there for a short time. It soon took off. However not long after it was found sitting on the south cove pier at Bush Terminal Pier Park. Glaucous Gulls are large and bulky birds.

Bush Terminal offered a bonus though simultaneously with Glaucous. An ICELAND GULL immature floated in  the water presumably in the same cove.

REDPOLLS continue as usual at the western end of Dell Avenue in Greenwood Cemetery

There were a few gulls floating south of Valentino Pier this morning and my attention was immediately drawn by this one as it flew in to land. Impression was of intense whiteness to the flight feathers, especially outer primaries and secondaries. I was at quite a distance, on land in the park itself when the bird came in; I rushed back out to the end of the pier to take the photos of the bird at rest. Bill large, pink with black tip. Darkest plumage on the bird the gray-brown of the face. The bird began to swim away from the jetty in the direction of Pier 41, so I hurried around to that side for more views and photos. Soon afterwards the bird picked up and flew north through the Buttermilk Channel; I have only the one marginal in-flight photo."

surprise at prospect feeders

I refilled the feeders late this morning and saw a surprise for a common species of the summer. .

After I filled the feeders I took up station to watch them for awhile on my day off. The feeders became quite active with the usual suspects. But alighting on the bell ornament seed ball, I noted a GRAY CATBIRD. All right that's a cool sighting for me for an out of season species. But then I looked over to the suet and there's a second Gray Catbird! Wow, even better , for a winter day ,something memorable to mark the day. I don't believe I ever seen TWO Gray Catbirds at the feeders.

The first Catbird got a little territorial, chasing the second catbird off the suet. Ok Come on now, there's enough food for the both of you...

Southwood Ave

Greenwood Cemetery's Southwood Ave is rich with Sweetgum Trees. Therefore it's not surprising winter finches are drawn to this stretch of road.

Besides Dell Ave connected to Southwood, the spot at Southwood and Union Avenues had also a COMMON REDPOLL. This single bird was hanging out with American Goldfinches. Dell Avenue also hosted a few Redpolls mingling with Pine SISKINS today. It was bad back light today making it tough to distinguish both these very similar species.

I hope the birds stick around for awhile..

Redpoll windy pickings

Greenwood cemetery's Dell Avenue continues as the hot spot for COMMON REDPOLL. As many as 6 were reported maybe more high in the sweet gum trees that line the road.

Near Winter green path at Dell Avenue's south end before the Southwood\ Oakwood avenues junction, I finally saw A Red poll after 3 attempts--thanks to Rafael Campos helping me on the birds after a heads up tip from Joe Borker. With low bright sun glare  a hindrance for me,I struggled and was able to get on one cooperative Red poll. Its such A gorgeous bird ,a fave.

After my red poll success,I took a ride to Dell water. There at the feeder the female PURPLE FINCH put in its appearance.

Hesitating about going to Bush Terminal Pier park on such a gusty day, I arrived there blasted by strong wind.It was fortunate temperatures were mild. Its not a good idea birding the waterfront on such gusty days. You must never let go of your scope lest it blows over. Except for gulls below the ospreyt nest pole, only the south cove bore fruit. A flock of over 120 ducks rode the choppy waves, paying no mind to the stiff winter wind. I didn't bother to count but the flock obviously included buffleheads and both scaup species. After having enough of the high wind I departed for the warm confines of my home, quite happy to have one red poll in the books..

New Years Day Redpoll festival

The celebration of the new year traditionally undertaken by birders getting a quick start on thier year list started off well. Greenwood cemetery did its part with COMMON REDPOLLS. Prospect park also helped with a double billing of ICELAND GULLS for the BBC NYD walk.

COMMON REDPOLLS gets first dibs for this nomadic winter finch. One has to get lucky with this small species that move around. But you can increase your odds looking for trees that offer food during the critical time.Like hyperactive chickadees,Redpolls fall along the same line as food crazy to combat body heat loss.

In the highly sought Sweetgum trees were found redpolls in Greenwood. Rich areas at Southwood and Locust or Union Avenues,Dell Ave at Dell wood path and nearby Winter green path and north of Crescent Water by the Winter Boardwalk all produced finds. These sightings were few numbers. though Birding along South wood Ave seems to do the trick with all its sweet gums.

A PURPLE FINCH was reported at Dell water where a CHIPPING SPARROW also fed in the phragmites.

Meanwhile over at Prospect Lake two ICELAND GULLS were celebrities for the Brooklyn Bird Club walk. One gull was an adult, the other a juvenile. Its rare to get  a rarity on New Years Day,so I'm sure the group was very delighted.

A good first day from what I see..
