Birders for Sunday were treated to an unlikely double take with two different bittern species in the same general area in Prospect Park. With half marathon chaos today, Kentucky Warbler didn't run far from yesterday's first appearance.
This morning at Upper Pool ( sourced by Falkill Falls) , a surprising American Bittern was spotted on the isthmus between both pools. A report I read said the Least Bittern was near it as well! This is unreal as I never heard this happening here with both species together . Further reports placed the American moving over to the Lower Pool on the southern part; the Least traveled as well towards the Esdale Bridge- the entry into the Ravine where shockingly it was out in the open! See the link here for one example https://ebird.org/checklist/S230184791.
Meanwhile the other celebrity is the Kentucky Warbler. From its first recorded location in North Midwood Saturday ,the bird moved towards the zoo's northern boundary, in the compost mulch yard. From multiple reports I read, I gathered the calling bird was in lots of different spots, at one point nearest the zoo buildings on the east side. Wherever it was ,this Kentucky has safe refuge from the throngs of people drawn in for today's half Marathon. While there, it turned on its charm for mobs of birders.
In other news , greenwood cemetery hosted Cape May and Orange crowned warblers in the Crescent Water area .
Enjoy your week...
