Meet 7:00 am at Grand Army Plaza park entrance (Stranahan Statue)

 Trip Leader: Sandy Paci

Anytime a rarity surfaces, it makes the day for any birder.  The continuance of the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER on Breeze Hill, seen mostly in the center oaks of Breeze Hill, with one trip to a Sycamore Maple above the Rustic Arbor, makes the case for a number of birders, including the Brooklyn Bird Club walk today. It stayed present  thru the day, up to 6 pm in the evening.

Adding to the Yellow-throated,a PURPLE MARTIN appeared, this rarity seen perhaps once every two years , being an erratic species  and oftentimes overlooked as usually this species flies over and it takes a keen and experienced eye to identify one. A great bird for the park

Across the Prospect Expressway, specifically in Greenwood Cemetery, Orrin Tilevitz recorded another rarity for the area,a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER in the Crescent Water. We should be seeing one of these in Prospect soon enough.

Hi Rob and Peter,

Rob, thanks for a great walk and fun birds!  There were 21 participants today.

Here is today's list,  - we were all spread out at times, i may have missed something you saw.  Also 2 not-so-great pics of the yellow-throated warbler.  I hope others got better.

As of 5 pm, Bobbi tweeted that the YELLOW THROATED WARBLER is still present atop Breeze Hill in the oaks in the middle or over the dirt mound. same location as before

Prospect April 29th rare YTWA

Patience is a virtue. With  no intention to go into a frenzied chase for yesterday's Yellow Throated Warbler,   this morning the bird hung around. First sighted by Rob Bate on the south side Lullwater path just southeast of the Rustic Arbor, this YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER continued its journey towards Breeze Hill after Rob's report.

At lunchtime, I spent 30 minutes looking for this bird around the perimeter of Breeze Hill. No luck, so I left. I get to Center Drive when I got a text  from Kristin Costello that she has the bird, after changing her mind to go one direction and head back thru Breeze ( very good and wise decision). I sped back , almost falling out of my electric cart when I rounded a hard curve at the Willink Drive. When I got to the top of eastern Breeze, I screeched to a stop , unawared I stopped at a clay mud spot, splattering mud all over my jacket left arm and black pants...No matter, a quick dash  to where Kristin was, and I checked off one YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER ,seen in the oak above the east dirt mound. The funny part was Kristin could hear me coming a mile away.....  ;)>

Later, Rob Jett got the twitter tweet , made haste and re found the bird in the oak grove in Breeze Hill's meadow Oval or three Black Oaks.

A good bird for this dreary day....

Update /reminder BBC Birdathon details May 11th

From Bobbi Manian, coordinator for Birdathon BBC May 11th Birdathon Reminder

The Birdathon is getting close and this year is going to be very exciting. We have three teams formed already, but we want to encourage everyone to join! Additional good news, we have received a very generous matching fund pledge from friend of the BBC, Ms. Susan Scioli, so every dollar you raise will be matched!

If you can't get out to bird that day, please consider supporting one of our teams, or making a donation to the fund. The BBC does not have 501c3 tax exempt status so we are setting up a separate fund with the Prospect Park Alliance for the Tree Project.

Checks should be made out to the "Prospect Park Alliance" with a note in the memo area stipulating they are for "Brooklyn Bird Club Tree Project", or "BBC Tree Project".

 Checks should be mailed to

Bobbi Manian,
227 Degraw Street,
 Brooklyn, NY 11231.

Contact Bobbi (roberta.manian@yahoo.com) to be placed on a team, or to register your team, or with any additional questions.

Prospect April 28th "A parade of warbler rarities"

A day after the stunning discovery of yesterday's Says Phoebe, making  it the second consecutive new mega rarity this month and last for Prospect, a "letdown" today. The mob of birders coming in to find the Says  did not succeed finding this species but instead benefited from a trifecta of warbler rarities : KENTUCKY, HOODED and last , YELLOW-THROATED.

The first call I received came from Ed Crowne KENTUCKY WARBLER. First reported behind the Pagoda Bandshell by Ed, Phil Paine and Tom Dulski, this specimen flew across the Center drive into the southern Midwood where it spent the rest of the day , seen by multitude of birders watching from the woods trail ( with the railing ) going due west  east, on both sides of the trail. It quieted down late morning but resurfaced in late afternoon .

While the Midwood came alive with birders feet, a HOODED WARBLER male was reported. This bird entertained birders with several appearances at the Ambergill Pool in the Ravine, before the Little Rock Arch Bridge. Again , multiple observers benefited seeing this species. Later, I received a report that it was spotted closer to the Lower Pool , on the same slope behind the tall fence.

And last for the rare warblers, YELLOW-THROATED was called in "tweeted" by Adam , in late morning. That bird was spotted along Center Drive, heading towards the Quaker Cemetery, the Yellow-throated enjoyed by many as the bird eventually climbed higher and took off  further into the ridge.

Meanwhile , over in Greenwood Cemetery, Tom Preston spotted SUMMER TANAGER by the Hillside mausoleum .

A terrific day  for rare birds, even if the numbers were not high.

****************************************

Frm Adam:
What a great morning in the Park! Got my lifer Kentucky Warbler and great looks at Hooded and Yellow-throated Warblers. Unusual numbers of Blue-headed Vireo and my f o s Red-eyed Vireo. The largest flock of cormorants I've ever seen here overflew me as I entered the park at Lincoln Rd -- abt 100 birds plus or minus 5. I know there were other good warblers seen that I missed.

Can't wait to see the day's list!

Cheers

Adam

*** SAYS' PHOEBE** Prospect

As of this post, a young SAYS PHOEBE is in the Peninsula sumacs grove adjacent to Well Drive. Seen at 11 am, it flew off but returned to the sumacs where a mob of birders are enjoying this likely first time species recorded in Prospect, the second consecutive month a first timer has decided to drop in.  Thanks to Ryan Bass spotting it  and alerting the others in his group, Mike, Dennis,Kristin,Heydi ,Bob and whoever else..

NOTE :-) a quick check of Cornell's Ebird shows today's SAYS PHOEBE is the first sighting in Prospect's storied history..... so since my retirement at end of February as prez of BBC, that's two consecutive months a new species (March was Varied Thrush ) ..

What's in store for May ????

Adam :

Had a patchy session in the park this morning. My f o s Orchard Oriole was in the same area that the Lawrence's was yesterday (I had a Baltimore nearby yesterday), which was nice, but overall the day was a little slow. The northern section of the park was amazingly warbler-free to begin with -- the vast majority of the Yellow-rumps, Palms were down in the Lullwater. I didn't survey the Lake or the Peninsula. Beautiful, sunny morning though!
Cheers

Ania Greszik

Hi Peter,

I saw a tweet from Keir earlier today that two ravens were spotted over
Lullwater. I wanted to mention that I had a (single) raven flyover my apartment
by Greenwood Cemetery yesterday around 10:30AM. It appeared to be missing a tail
feather or two.

I also had an Ovenbird and Nashville Warbler in native flora at BBG yesterday.
Must have just missed the gc flycatcher.

Good birding!
Ania

It seems pretty close to where last years nest was though I did not know exactly where it was.

2013 Spring Marsh Planting Update
Greetings Volunteers!

Hopefully you all are still as excited about this upcoming project as we are! If so, we have some great news. The dates are here!

Click on the white dates to sign up for that day's planting. Please sign up only if you are at least 95% positive that you will be able to join us. Your name will go on the sign-in list, and we will be expecting you.
Please provide a valid email address when signing up. This will be our main method of contact.

As you can imagine, for both your safety and ours, all dates are subject to weather. If a date is postponed, we will notify you.
9am-1pm
Our very first day of community-led marsh planting. Families, we would prefer if you and your children participate on one of the later scheduled days.
11am-3pm
Our second day of planting. We should have the process pretty well under control by now. Families and individuals of all ages are welcome!
If you're looking for a fun and educational to refresh yourselves afterward, consider one of our highly recommended cruises here.

Girl Scouts planting beachgrass
12pm-4pm
Our third, and probably last day of planting. Help us finish up the restoration on Ruler's Bar marsh!

Yellow-rumped Warbler

Thursday, April 25, 2013

Prospect April 25th, the first array of migrants , very rare sightings

Thursday's birds produced a scattered infusion of migrants including collectively 15 species of warblers , culminating with very rare LAWRENCE's WARBLER in the morning, then into the midafternoon, as hardy birders stuck out despite a slow showing all day with the tail end rare sighting of EVENING GROSBEAK. Furthermore, some other nice birds, first of year's with incoming tyrant flycatchers and quality to ask for.As i expected in my gut feeling last night, it wasn't the quantity  even if 15 species warblers were reported but Quality.

First , a report on the LAWRENCE's WARBLER. The Brooklyn Bird Club Thursday walk  led by Tom Stephenson were treated to a show. Their fortune with this hybrid warbler ( of the Blue winged and Golden Winged Warbler complex), was first seen in the Elizabeth 's Tulip Tree side at the mouth of the southern Vale of Cashmere for a good five minutes before taking off to the  flowering Cherry overlooking the BBC Centennial Garden. When I arrived with several other birders, a search for over an hour was in vain. But I did get several new warbler species for my yearly list.

The Vale of Cashmere in the north end was productive with 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS in the pool, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER , NORTHERN PARULA WARBLER ,HOUSE WREN and a number of CHIPPING SPARROWS.

Throughout the day, 15 species warblers were reported, some of them uncommon, with the biggest surprise a very early BLACKPOLL WARBLER  (Keir) in the Lullwater. Here as well, the continuing WORM EATING WARBLER (Keir) frequented the west side just south of the cove. Adding to these , other warblers: BLACK-THROATED BLUE at Pagoda Bridge, PRAIRIE and NASHVILLE WARBLER at Maryland Monument, and both WATERTHRUSH species in the Vale Cashmere pool.

IN between the rare sightings,EASTERN KINGBIRD is in , seen at the Maryland Monument, and my GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Native Flora section.

Sparrows were good today , a number of SWAMP, a FIELD and SAVANNAH with good numbers WHITE-THROATED.

By midafternoon, another great bird. I received a note from Ryan that a Pat Palladino reported on  NYSBIRDS listserve Evening Grosbeak (EVGR). When I got over there with Bobbi Manian, Issaac Grant was already watching the EVGR, perched by the Lullwater southern shoreline, near the bottom of the slope trail from the former feeders site. The female EVGR moved along the shore towards the Rustic Arbor when after feeding on Yew Tree berries , then on the ground behind, moved  into the slope area above the Arbor when it disappeared. For one day , the White-winged Crossbills (Yes, spotted again , today by Keir ) were displaced by another winter species rarity.I speculated whether this was the same EVGR that visited the feeders around January and remembered on the return if the feeders were around. ( Sorry, milady..we took them down )

South winds are predicted late tonight after 10 pm according to Accuweather , which maybe might kick along a few more birds. It will be slow effort but  rewarding  if you put in the long walking hours ( that I spent 8.5 hours trying..gonna get harder as one gets older ).

Good birding !

Ryan :

Hi Peter,

Seems like lots of reports of quality birds in the Park today. I had a few FOS, including a bright Adult Male Black-throated Blue Warbler at the Music Grove Bridge. I managed to photograph that Louisiana Waterthrush up in the Vale that we saw, links below:

Cheers,
Ryan

Adam :

I missed most of the real goodies, but a fantastic day to be out in the park anyway! Wren trifecta in Midwood, Vale nicely active.
