First detected and tentatively identified by its distinctive chip, but it took a while to get it to come out for confirmation and photos, plus the Merlin update seems like it might mean that the app is more tentative about identifying rare birds. (In my experience Merlin normally has no problem with this chip, but refused to identify it this time, presumably because of the date.) Little flitting mostly yellow warbler with dark undertail and black cap. Bad photos."

Fwd: Migration Morning in BBP 10-23-2024

Final BBP wed walk

To: Peter Dorosh

Hi Peter-
We had a lovely final Migration Morning of the fall at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Within a few minutes of stepping onto the Harbor Lawn, 15 of us had 4 species of warbler feeding on the ground with the sparrows- Palm, Blackpoll, Pine, and Yellow-rumped.
Surprisingly, no Black-Crowned Night Herons roosting on the Long Pond, where we've seen up to 19 this season. A continuing, late Northern Waterthrush made up for their absence.
On Pier 3, a Tufted Titmouse greeted us, and we picked up one more warbler in the maze, a Nashville Warbler. On the lawn, we detected a Purple Finch by its gentle "pik" call and it gave brief views.
Great turnout this season, and we'll pick it up again next Spring!
Mike

My post work walk

Kind of jealous to see all the good birds seen lately while I went leaf peeping upstate for 6 days , my only free time nowadays is after work to get some of those birds.

So this afternoon sounded like a good plan

First a stop at the sparrow bowl which is a very short distance from my office. And it's a straight route for home. As expected it's a sparrow haven in there! Despite tall grasses, some birds perches in the mugwort and surrounding flora. Those I found were Field ,abundant Song, white throated and a junco. But I didnt waste too much time in angst for the nethermead birds.

Enroute I ran into Eleanor Ray who mentioned that the Vesper Sparrow was hanging around the big Walnut tree. But getting there I saw birder Maddie who gestured to the donor white oak inside the fence enclosure closest to the path. Edging closer and with Maddie's help saying where it was,  I was able to see the Clay colored sparrow perched close to the trunk. A great bird for me not having seen one in years ( of course they're rare here though)

Rusty tweeted the bittern during this time,so after a futile look for the vesper, I took off for the bittern for a better opportunity..

By now ,I'm stationed at the peninsula pink beach and after a scan,I see a brownish bulge within the phragmites left side. It never stood up,but I'll take the sighting for a good 2nd great bird. I can't get greedy. Tomorrow will be a new day and new opportunities.

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S198899705
- Comments: "amazingly the bittern found by Tom Stephenson last week was seen again yesterday (Sunday) by Omar Alui on discord in the same area across from the Pink Bench so I went and staked it out. Did not see it at first so walked the peninsula, came back and found it on far left side of the phrags. Incredibly camouflage, super long yellow beak and eye. dark cap and dope camo streaking on the neck.it did all the classic poses: smushed up in a small ball borb; extending neck up as far as possible to look like a reed, and then eventually a low, ducking creep walk that got too exciting so he took a short flight hop.
