Prospect Nighthawks

In a tradition that started decades ago when I took up post in the Nethermead, I usually might have had a few accompanying birders. Now with social media's impact, we get a crowd..a BIG crowd. In a good way, the nighthawk watch of August's end has become a social event that transcends beyond observing these special birds.

Tonight , a record -- impressively- 72 birders came out to enjoy Nighthawks. And they weren't disappointed as a total of six birds put in an appearance. They weren't low nor numerous but what the heck, it was fun and exciting for everyone.

From people sitting in low beachchairs or high campchairs, or on spread out blankets to folks standing up , it didn't matter: everyone was enjoying each other's company, in conversation with old friends or new,  while keeping an eye on the sky.

Our August Brooklyn Bird Club  nighthawk watch tradition has become something bigger than watching these passing birds: it has defined the meaning of sharing the love of birds and the bond birders hold dear to club and birders.

Just ask any of the 72 folks who showed up tonight, from the old timers to the beginners, and they'll say they were glad to make it out here and happy there's a club that thinks of them. And that is all that matters.

Good Boiding,
-Kb

Early into the watch 7pm, first nighthawk seen approximately 734 pm.

Prospect Park, Kings County, NY, US - eBird Hotspot

17 warbler species reported today Aug 27th in Prospect, coincidentally on The Battle of Brooklyn anniversary. Note wormeating, pine, early yellow rumped, cape may , black throated blue &green, etc

Big surprise at GWC Dellwater

In one of the earliest arrivals and maybe a record for the date, a CONNECTICUT WARBLER made an appearance in Greenwood Cemetery's Dellwater.

Typically Connecticuts come in the first week September.

Ryan Mandlebau tweeted out the sighting showing the bird with the prominent eyering. See the Ebird report below from Michelle Talich and Ryan.

Today's 7th historical sighting  of Black Tern was spotted by Terry Kim, the rarity patrolling the waters near Music Island . Fortunately a photo of the smallish tern was verified by Peter Paul late morning.

This is the first sighting since September 2013 so it's a good rarity. Unfortunately today's bird did not stick around.

Other records for Prospect is listed below.

May 18,2011
Sept 16 1953

BBC call for Butterfly meadow volunteers

Facebook message:

In association with the Prospect Park Landscape Management department, a small group of dedicated BBC members have worked for several years maintaining Butterfly Meadow and other areas on Lookout Hill. Its grown from a weed-infested plot to a wonderful bird and butterfly habitat.

We could use two or three more volunteers for the upcoming season. We meet every other Wednesday morning, from 9 a.m. until 11:30, from Sept-November, and then again from around April-June. The work consists of weeding and planting and is not usually too strenuous.

Note, we need volunteers that can commit to coming on a regular basis (every two weeks.) If you need to miss one here and there that's fine, but please be able to make the majority of the sessions.

We plan to start the fall season on Wednesday, September 14th so if you are interested in helping out, please email us at membership@brooklynbirdclub.org

Just a start..

Seeing that a spurt of warblers started yesterday,it was ideal with a desire to do something :go for a birding walk. Of course, Prospect was close by and that seemed the best course.

It was unproductive the first hour . Western Lullwater, good yesterday, showed nothing today. Retracing my steps towards Terrace Bridge,I ran into Alex R. I mentioned that fall migration on the Peninsular can be productive even late in the day because the Peninsula is like a migrant trap. And so with Alex's s help, we saw three warbler species. It's not much but this early in August, I'll take it.

In the peninsula cove on lullwater side, Alex spots the first warbler, a Northern Waterthrush. It walked atop a fallen tree just above water. While we looked vainly where the Waterthrush went, above an American Redstart , a"Yellow start" more like it, went in and out of foliage;it's tough with these fall warblers!

Proceeding farther we stopped in the Peninsula thumb, site of the last warbler. And again Alex spots an immature or female
Yellow Warbler that I got good looks in the Willow Oak.

It's sort of nostalgic even though I've seen these warblers so many times, the magic of fall migration - my favorite time- never gets old.

Fwd: Pop Up Morning Flight Watch at Jamaica Bay with Doug Gochfeld

Pop Up Morning Flight Watch at Jamaica Bay with Doug Gochfeld.

Saturday August 13th 6AM. meet at North Channel Bridge Parking lot. No registration required.

The calendar says summer, but as far as many birds are concerned, autumn has arrived! Meet the first “cold front” of the fall on Saturday morning at Jamaica Bay, and join Doug Gochfeld for some early season morning flight birding. While the volume of birds may not be what it is later in the season, we’re hoping for early-migrating warblers that are missed during migration watches later on in the season. We’ll be trying to see and identify small migrant birds in flight, and hopefully the north winds will give us plenty of chances to try, learn, and try again. This will take place as a stationary count, as we wait for the birds to fly by us, so there will be no hiking involved for this activity.

The parking lot gate for the North Channel bridge (we'll be at the one on the east side of Cross Bay Blvd.) parking lot is usually closed until 6 AM, and this event will last for a couple of hours, depending on how the activity is. If you’re looking to extend your birding and shift gears from songbirds to shorebirds, the Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival takes place just down the road at 9 AM this morning as well.

- Comments: "Flying over the East River side of Manhattan, initially being harasses by a lankier, thinner winged kestrel, before the Merlin used its more compact build and broader based wings to power away over southern Manhattan. No plumage details seen except that it was overall darker than the kestrel. Shape and flight style were diagnostic."
