Lookout Hill

The imposing big Lookout Hill, in my view the best birding spot in Prospect Park given its migrant trap ability today yielded two really good warblers. One is the continuing KENTUCKY WARBLER and the second the YELLOW BREASTED CHAT. The hill also produced some quality lesser rare warblers, mostly feeding in the main oaks

The KENTUCKY WARBLER is an enigmatic yet true to its nature bird. Revealing only very brief glimpses today to several birders, it would hide very well in the dense brush around a fallen timber. I tried my luck a few times today but no dice. Instead some birders waited along time before the Kentucky gave its two second walk and gone. The location is still the western slope by the north stairs ,below the middle slope dirt track .Lucky observers were Bobbi Manian, Ed Crowne,Janet Zinn,Kathy Toomey,& Karen O'Hearn

Meanwhile , Rob Newman and his young son Gabriel mentioned to me they had a YELLOW BREASTED CHAT .Spotted noontime at the top of the switchback trail that runs up Lookout Hill's south slope by the Maryland Monument, it no doubt gave better and longer looks than the Kentucky.

At this top switchback trail ,I was rewarded after work with two good warblers. At one point seen together, a BLUE WINGED and a CAPE MAY WARBLER alighted in a small cherry before flying off into a sycamore maple.

Lastly, other good birds to report on or around the Hill: A YELLOW BILLED CUCKOO above Butterfly Meadow , WHITE CROWNED SPARROW below the Maryland Monument ; two INDIGO BUNTNGs males in a giant oak on the north slope, observers respectively Will Pollard,Klemens Gasser and myself help enhanced Lookout Hills renown reputation as the best birding spot in Prospect.
