Hi Peter, et al.
Thursday was a superb day, both in terms of weather and birds. I felt like it was the "birdiest" day I'd ever seen in the park, with lots of warblers and other species spread out over the whole place, really highlighting how important the park is for protecting and feeding these migrants.
I logged 85 species including 25 species of warblers. We had a very cooperative and enthusiastic group. About half have only been birding a year, which is really fantastic.
Highlights included an extremely cooperative Worm-eating Warbler, which we had to walk away from... Orange-crowned Warbler, more Prairie Warblers than I've ever seen/heard even at Sterling Forest, a couple of cooperative Blue-winged Warblers, a cooperative Blackburnian, a very cooperative Prothonotary Warbler (you can see the theme...)
We also found a small hatch-out behind the Well House that included two startlingly bright Scarlet Tanagers, Indigo Bunting, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and several Rough-winged Swallows.
A couple of the warblers were unfortunately brief or heard only; and the craziest thing was two or three Red Crossbills that flew over, calling. Didn't get a recording so not sure of the type, but they were of the "dryer" variety.
A Yellow-throated Vireo was singing near the Peninsula Sumacs. Two or more have been seen there over the past week or two. This time the male sang only briefly from a tall tree nearby. I wonder if there is a pair that could be nesting! Worth checking out.
Here's the list.
Best regards,
Tom
