As bird numbers suffer from this depressing north/east wind, the quality holds firm with today's PROTHONOTARY WARBLER and YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. The former bird was spotted by the Brooklyn Bird Club walk, by sharp eyed Kellie Q , this water or marsh inclined bird seen initially on Duck Island, the view from the Peninsula point shelter area.
As the PROTHONOTARY WARBLER worked its way around the island towards the octagonal "Summer House" shelter that looks toward the island, the bird appeared on a water snag pointing towards the rink for some birders over there, then disappeared for awhile until it was reported an hour and half later by Rob Jett and Keir on the Peninsula. From the west shore of the Thumb , it again took off , then refound 30 minutes later by Mary Eyster along the cove by its calling, up a good 15 feet in a hornbeam tree. Here, it stayed in this general area by woods trails and shoreline for at least 30 minutes with stunning views for 8 birders, feeding off bugs in the hornbeam trees and saplings or quick forays by the black plastic on the water. Janet Zinn took an excellent photo of high quality , seen below.
Earlier in the morning , in the Lullwater, Keir found the thought long gone YELLOW THROATED WARBLER , apparently hanging out somewhere all this time. Whatever..its here again and maybe sticking around as this ceaseless north winds seizes the region.
A singing PRAIRIE WARBLER supplemented the two rare warblers, adding some excitement for birders in the BBC; it continued to sing vociferously in the Lullwater & lower Lookout east hillside.
So, for still low numbers reported from the BBC walk and other birders, quality trumps scarcity. WE will take what nature gives us...

From Ed Crowne, leading BBC walk
Hi, Peter. We had 15 to 20 in our group today. From 7 am to noon we tallied 50 species. Our highlight bird was of course the Prothonotary spotted by a member of our group.Best regards, Ed
****Bobbi Manian's note and photos of Prairie Warbler
Hi Peter,What a great day! We were quoting you as we left the park today: "quality birds". Didn't get any shots of the Prothonotary during Ed's walk, but on the way out, Kristin tracked down this highly vocal Prairie singing on the side of Lookout, giving us great views in a beautiful setting.
