- Comments: "Flagged: A low-density migrant, almost exclusively in fall, and not always an easy ID, especially when photos are this bad. But! This happens to be a pretty bright individual, with yellow all the way underneath and brightest on the throat, where it runs all the way through the middle. Dark lores, dark cap, and maybe even shorter, more hooked bill also visible. In the Butterly Meadow, moving through the oaks along the west side, for a couple of minutes, before Peter D showed up and I failed to refind the bird."

- Comments: "Awesome find by MCHL that was even less cooperative than others I have seen. Lots of people on the scene trying to locate this one. I spent a good hour in front of basically three adjacent trees and had nothing to report except for a brief darting silhouette. My approach in these unpleasant situations is to walk away and take a breather. I went over and had my fill of the Saltmarsh Sparrow and then walked slowly back to the scene. The near crowd that had been there when I left had dissipated, but I had the good luck to find Jonny with his long lens focussed on the bird. We got great looks in the lower branches of two different trees before the bird scooted down into dense high grass made itself invisible. The lateness of the hour made for long exposures and blurry pics, but they aren't my worst."

Foraging, or sitting, in the grass being quite cooperative and looking very lost, something like those Henslow's that pick a couple square feet of baseball field to sit down in for a couple of hours or more, as if everything is fine."

Thirteen participants joined today's Brooklyn Bird Club Wednesday migration walk in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Although steady rain arrived about 20 minutes into the outing, the group persevered and was rewarded with a good mix of waterbirds, raptors, and early fall migrants.
Highlights included six Black-crowned Night Herons roosting over Long Pond, a Cooper's Hawk watching from atop the Pier 1 condo, a drab Cape May Warbler and a nice showing of warblers despite the weather. The group recorded 26 species in total.
The locusts and pagoda trees around the River Cafe and Luke's Lobster, a hotspot of recent days, was cold, but the group saw notable warblers by the other hotspot around the Squibb Bridge.
Back at it next Wednesday, hopefully in sunnier weather.
