It perched in the open on a branch at eye level within feet of me for few seconds, long enough to see it clearly. Yellow underparts, olive green upperparts and typical facial pattern with black spot mostly below and behind the eye. Unfortunately, it flew off before I could get a photo. I searched for it for almost 10 minutes without hope.

https://ebird.org/hotspot/L109516/cur

A good birding diversity weekend. Rather than me summarizing, take a peek.59 species seen.

Greenwood's weekend gems

Some birders namely Kathy and Will on separate days found some birding gems.

Saturday when Kathy T birded offered up BLUEWINGED WARBLER and BLACK BILLED CUCKOO. A previous post has details.

Today was Will P's turn and his catch was flyover COMMON NIGHTHAWK and PRAIRIE WARBLER at Crescent Water.

Just Google " Greenwood cemetery Ebird hotspot" to get the updated checklist.

Saturday Prospect morning

A few scant reports from Prospect mostly just Lookout Hill though two birds spotted were quality species.

I was hoping for Warblers while standing watch at Butterfly Meadows Western edge. I saw very briefly an AMERICAN REDSTART that moved rather quickly . Then a bird flew to a low branch of the BBC donated Oak; immediately I recognized an empidonax flycatcher and a gorgeous YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER splashed by early sunrise gave me a great look before it took off towards Arleens Pines. Otherwise I didn't mind the lack of birds in other areas.

Reports on the Hill also mentioned an adult female
SUMMER TANAGER according to Gus. Ovenbird,Baltimore Oriole and Ruby Throated Hummingbird along the monument steps.

It's only August...

Saturday's bird forecast

According to Cornell's updated bird forecast Saturday paints a more rosier picture for birds coming thru than Friday which was impacted by all morning showers that rained on a migration parade. There was a friday midmorning west northwest wind . A touch of some yellow hitting NYC western  meaning almost medium movement on the scale below. So, go boiding in your greenspaces Saturday! At least you should be off or most of you....and hopefully passerine birds are in town.

Prospect Park Monarch chrysalis emergence

From a restored area thats been planted with native flowers, my coworker Howard found this Monarch butterfly emerging from its Chrysalis on Monday. The area was recently restored from mulberry infestation and converted into a wildflower/grass meadow. Good to see our effort pay off even for one Monarch.

eBird Checklist - 15 Aug 2019 - Prospect Park - 41 species (+1 other taxa) Karen's list

Tiny trickle of Warblers in Prospect

It isn't alot but two warbler species we're reported on Lookout Hill today.

Karen and Kathy went birding and found a PRAIRIE WARBLER and AMERICAN REDSYART.
The wind isn't great yet but some birds will get a head start. Keep tuned to forecasts. My good bet that the next northwest wind will trigger a nice much bigger trickle. I'll if I remember to check will look at Bird cast

Update after seeing the checklist later the actual number Warblers seen was seven.

Subject: Volunteers needed for Butterfly Meadow Crew

Dear Bird Club Member,

As some of you may know, in association with the Prospect Park Landscape Management department, a small group of dedicated BBC members have worked for several years maintaining Butterfly Meadow and other areas on Lookout Hill. Its grown from a weed-infested plot to a wonderful bird and butterfly habitat.

We could use two or three more volunteers for the upcoming season.  We meet every other Wednesday morning, from 9 a.m. until 11:30, from Sept-November, and then again from around April-June. The work consists of weeding, planting, fixing fences, etc. and is not usually too strenuous.

We plan to start the fall season on Wednesday, September 11th so if you are interested in helping out, please contact me asap by replying to this email. You will need to be registered with the Prospect Park Volunteer Corps, if you are not already (this can be done online.)

Thank you!
Janet Zinn
Volunteer Leader, Lookout Hill Corps.
