Hi Peter,

Hope you're surviving the heat in the park.

We had our second Thursday walk. Unlike the extremely birdy first walk, this one was a bit more like walking through a ghost town...very quiet...We did end up with some good species, including 8 species of warblers, and we got a good number of lifers for a visitor from S California.
But all in all it was pretty quiet.

Here's the list.
Highlights included Wilson's and Canada Warblers, two Northern Waterthrush, Osprey, adolescent Wood Duck, Least Flycatcher, two Great Blue Heron, and lots of Orioles...

Best regards,
Tom

Friday fizzle

A day after Thursday's treat of birds,Friday fizzled in Prospect.

My day off coupled with a few friends I met found little evidence of warbler numbers. Except for a scattered pitter patter of birds, apparently yesterday's birds just wanna get the heck out of Brooklyn.

This is today's secondhand offerings regarding noteworthy Warblers  : PRAIRIE & Magnolia along western Well Drive; BLUEWINGED Butterfly north path into the chipped dirt trail; CHESTNUT SIDED slope dirt trail between Lookout Meadows;YELLOW inside Butterfly Meadow and Redstarts in few numbers at the perimeter.

I didn't stay long as reports came to me of stagnant activity ( or what we say " dead everywhere').

EASTERN PEWEE,VEERY,ORIOLES all appeared.

Interesting is reported RED BREASTED NUTHATCH. Normally a later fall species that irrupts, hearing one now sends signals of potential irruption. Joshua M heard one along Lookout's summit.

This is the time of year we expect COMMON NIGHTHAWKS. Sure enough Karen O saw a flyover this morning over Lookout. But a secondhand report had me muttering to myself as Tim G reported some last night; normally I would have gone to look. There will be more in the next two weeks.

Hi Peter,

Along with great weather, we had lots of birds in the park today.
In the north end there were lots of redstarts , other warblers and a couple of orioles, indicating a good flight last night.
We stayed so long there that we arrived a bit late in the day at Lookout, and missed the Golden-winged that Ed found. But otherwise we had a very good day.

Highlights included:
13 species of warblers (15 counting the Blackburnian and Blue-winged Eni had on the way to join the group...) including a very bright Canada (as well as a dull one), Prairie Warbler, several Chestnut-sided Warblers, Least Flycatcher (possible Olive-sided but we didn't get a good enough look to be sure...), Spotted Sandpiper, several Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, both waterthrush including a very bright Louisiana, and lots more.

I'll post a couple of pictures on the FB site.

Best regards,
Tom

a good start

A good start for the first fall Thursday Brooklyn Bird Club walk  as good warbler numbers occurred but it was a single observer's bird that drew the hi light.

Tom Stephensons group witnessed good numbers at the north end of Prospect with Redstarts a prime species. Later in the Peninsula, reports of NASHVILLE, PRAIRIE and CANADA appeared.Tom;s report will be posted later.

However it was Ed Crowne's bird that stole the day. At the wood chip trail above the Maryland monument , a male GOLDEN WINGED WARBLER put in a rare showing .Unfortunately no other observer lucked in . Janet Zinn reported a young BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER nearby as she searched for the Golden bird.

Filling out a rest of the day, Joshua Malbin reported OLIVE SIDED FLYCATCHER , perched in a snag above Center drive around 3 PM.

In addition to the scarlet tanager, I saw 2 spotted sandpipers (one each on the Valley Water and the Dell Water), a redstart at the Dell Water, and a red-eyed vireo above it.

Oh, and I was wrong about the red-eyed vireo I reported yesterday.  On further review it appears to have been a Tennessee warbler (see white undertail covert).

Theres always a first ? Yea Cattle Egret !

Astounding as it may sound, today Janet Zinn found the first ever CATTLE EGRET in Greenwood Cemetery.

For its very unusual location (that aroused my attention), the Cattle Egret was observed at Cypress and Dale Avenues. I searched the Cornell Ebird recs later and there's not ever a pin on the map where Greenwood is located. I say wow. If true if its the very first, kudos to Janet for the first ever seen CAEG in GWC. Its hard to believe it but there it is.

Meanwhile as it went splat with lack of species in the local parks, I saw a Ruby Throated Hummingbird sipping the Cup Flowers at Butterfly Meadow's west end in Prospect.

A report from Orrin mentioned male SCARLET TANAGER on Greenwood Cypress Avenue.

PS   for your curiosity, the last reported Cattle Egret in Prospect was 56 years ago. It's prospect only record

Why is August called the Dog days of summer ? ( a few seconds to guess)
because its when Sirius, the "dog star" of Canis Major (Orion's puppy) breaks the eastern horizon when it rises this month.
Yes. Sirius-ly !
