back home

Back home after two weeks in the San Diego area having first reason welcomed  the birth of my great niece born April 24th. After that sightseeing ,birding and hope for objectives of new species.

The Anza-Borrego desert and Joshua tree National Park are truly spectacular places, scenic wonders and some birds found there. But it was Salton Sea that yield my hope for bird and two WARBLER surprises. At Sonny Bono Salton Sea National wildlife refuge,I found Greater Roadrunner ,a cooperative bird I saw below from a dike road, giving me 40 seconds look. Then at my lunch spot picnic table within a circular parking lot, after finding Verdin above,I spotted movement in a Palo Verde tree. Curiosity found me my first male Townsend's WARBLER. Even better a few seconds later, to my great surprise, with it, a spectacular first find, a beautiful Hermit WARBLER. So, for this warbler lover, regardless what I missed here East, those two Western warblers are memorable. About ten new lifers to report on casual vacationing.

While in my absence, Prospect was buzzing since Friday I gathered. Reports of BLUE GROSBEAK,CASPIAN TERN,PROTHONOTARY WARBLER KENTUCKY WARBLER,WORMEATING WARBLER.I need a day or so to rest, as my red eyed flight was turbulent and left me sleep deprived, and i will get back to normal routine.

Till then,

NYC PARKS COMPLETES RIDGEWOOD RESERVIOR DAM HAZARD RECLASSIFICATION, PRESERVING THE DAM AS NATURAL OPEN SPACE

NYC Parks has successfully completed a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reclassification of the Ridgewood Reservoir, lowering the dam hazard rating from Class C "High Hazard" to Class A "Low Hazard." This new designation eliminates the need to create any breaches in the dam, preserving it as a natural treasure for the local community.
"The Ridgewood Reservoir is home to a number of native flora and fauna, making it one of Queens' most diverse natural areas," said Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski. "The reclassification of the dam is an important step forward to ensure the preservation of this treasured green space."
"The Ridgewood Reservoir has always been such a unique and beautiful part of our community, and now, thanks to the dam reclassification, it always will be," said Council Member Elizabeth Crowley. "Thank you to the Parks Department for the new designation and ensuring our greenspace is preserved in this bustling city."
NYC Parks is fully committed to preserving the dam as natural open space. In the years since being taken offline as a water supply source, the reservoir has transitioned into a naturalized area that is unique within NYC and serves as an important ecological and public recreation resource.
The Ridgewood Reservoir is a former water supply reservoir located within Highland Park, straddling the Brooklyn-Queens border. The reservoir was constructed in 1858 and served as part of the water supply system for Brooklyn until 1959. The reservoir is divided into three basins separated by embankments and has been substantially drained for many years.

The Ridgewood Reservoir is located within the northeastern portion of Highland Park, and is a component of a larger green corridor formed by the park and several adjoining cemeteries. The site sits atop a ridge formed by the Wisconsin ice sheet's terminal moraine, the Harbor Hill Moraine. Rising more than 100 feet above the surrounding outwash plain, the reservoir affords dramatic views over its surroundings to nearby cemeteries, East New York, Woodhaven, the Rockaways, Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

going on vacation

Tomorrow i leave for vacation to southern California. Though I will do some birding,my primary reason going is to await the birth of my great niece. And see the toddler nephew and his parents.

So personal posts to blog will cease except for forwarded Ebird reports I get to my emails and any mega rarities . That's if I have WiFi and only in evenings.

If u follow instantaneously, follow my Twitter followers on my BBC Kings boids link on the side menu;Or Subscribe to What app( Google play store) Kings and Quuens bird alerts.

The Bird Trax also helps upper left menu. For prospect birders click on the Recent Prospect lists above left in blue and then click on the date to see that birders list.

Till then enjoy April spring migration !

lingering Prospect Yellow throated Warbler

Yesterday's YELLOW THROATED WARBLER decided to hang around a while longer. Seen by Lily Pool , it stayed within the Pool environs today.

Ed CROWNE heard the bird by the Lily Pool back wooden overlook platform, the bird seen in a tall blooming Red Maple. It stayed in that general area through the morning ,verified by two other birders. The maple is to the right of the platform.

No other reports received on this warm day except for a PRAIRIE WARBLER.  Anne Murray reported one at the Peninsula, along a wood chip trail half way to the tip. I did see some Palm Warblers but that about it this morning.

Meanwhile a second YELLOW THROATED WARBLER appeared in Greenwood Cemetery. That bird was seen 652 am on Rob Jett walk.It was spotted again by the cypress path.

An interesting note regarding the Pospect Yellow throated.Ed mentioned that the first appearance a week ago that bird bird never sang. Today's bird did. Was the first a female?

PROSPEÇT warblers including YTWA

Topping the list of a few warblers reported today was a late afternoon report of YELLOW THROATED WARBLER. Other WARBLER quality species happened in the morning.

Karen O'hearn tweeted out the Yellow throated WARBLER seen by Lily Pool near the Music Pagoda, opposite the green shipping containers. That sighting seen before 430.

In the morning PRAIRIE and OVENBIRD were few of the reported I read on Twitter..The PRAIRIE sang, getting the attention of the Linnanean Society group at the Lullwater Rustic Arbor. Ovenbird appeared in the Rose Garden above the Vale of Cashmere. Both are early birds.

WHITE EYED VIREO came in today. That species surfaced in the Vale in the large Willow Oak according to Ed Crowne.
