- Comments: "Continuing vagrant, still in the Midwood. Seen high in sweetgums just east of Rick’s Place, about 200 yards further north than where it was originally located by Ryan M. on 4/28. Superficially like a warbler in a chickadee costume: black throat, black mask, streaked flanks, as well as bright yellow lores
distinguishing it from similar but more expected species. Observed foraging briefly before it took off to the west. Followed the bird up the slope closer to Rick’s Place and watched it feed for ten minutes."

Hi Peter,

Despite NW winds and cold temps, we had a fine morning with good variety. The wind kept birdsong to a minimum. 64 species in all, including 10 warbler species, a flyover Broad-winged Hawk as I walked out of the park, and a Yellow-throated Vireo as we made a detour to look for the Black-throated Gray Warbler found by Ryan Mandelbaum earlier. That bird was re-found as the walk broke up shortly before noon, and a half-dozen folks from our group walked over there to see it.

Here is our list from the day: https://ebird.org/checklist/S108293395

Learning the Birds with Susan Fox Rogers

April 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Age 49, avid outdoorswoman Susan Fox Rogers fell for the birds. She took to birding with the energy of a convert, learning not just the birds, but the history of birders like Florence Merriam Bailey and the notorious murderer Nathan Leopold. She reveled in the history and natural history, environmental and ethical issues that the birds led her to. Learning the Birds chronicles the first three years Rogers, accompanied by expert birder and new boyfriend Peter, adventured from her home in the Hudson Valley to the Everglades, the desert Southwest, and Alaska in search of winged friends. Described by writer and bird expert Katie Fallon as a "perfectly balanced blend of history, science, travel, and adventure " Learning the Birds details what Rogers learns about birds, human nature, and herself. By turns humorous, and thought-provoking this memoir is full of wonder.

In this presentation, Susan Fox Rogers will talk of the joys and challenges of becoming a birder mid-age, show images of the remarkable birds she found—Long-eared Owl!, Bristle-thighed Curlew! Baby Boreal Owls!—and read from her new memoir, Learning the Birds.

Bio:

Susan Fox Rogers is the author of Learning the Birds: A Mid-Life Adventure, and My Reach: A Hudson River Memoir, which explores the Hudson River from the perspective of her kayak. She is the editor of eleven anthologies, including Solo: On Her Own Adventure, and Antarctica: Life on the Ice, which was created while in Antarctica on a National Science Foundation award for artists and writers. Her most recent collection, When Birds Are Near: Dispatches from Contemporary Writers celebrates the birding life.

She has received grants and awards that have allowed her to travel to Alaska, Antarctica, Wyoming, and by ship to the Arctic. "The Other Leopold," a chapter in Learning the Birds was selected by Robert Atwan for Best American Essays 2021.

Rogers has taught the creative essay, nature writing and bird-related classes at Bard College since 2001.

Meeting will be held via zoom and closed captioning is available for attendees.

Rarities today in prospect park

Tuesday was a good day in prospect.

The Least bittern continues to delight birders coming on droves to view this reclusive bird. Look into the pagan notes along the dirt trail on the Peninsula just southeast of the Wellhouse.

Racka found an usual spring overshoot Prothonotary warbler. First found at Binnen Pool at east Netrmead, the golden bird drifted down Binnen Run towards Lily Pool ,refound behind the Pagoda stage. It'll likely stick around at the back shore of Lily Pool where possibly the new rustic trail offers good potential seeing it.

Possibly a second Prothonotary was reported in the Lull water near the Terrace Bridge; or it xpuls be a fast bird from Binnen Run.

Continuing the rarity parade, both Yellow throated Warbler and Lark Sparrow were reported by Rob Bate. The warbler was on or near the western island of Three Sisters at midpoint south shore Prospect Lake; the Lark Sparrow a drab individual - was in the south lake shore across from and in line with the Peninsula Thumb;a Field Sparrow hung near the Lark.

At Long Meadow south of Picnic House, two Vesper Sparrows surfaced, spotted by Tripper Paul.It sounds like along the south margin woodland edges of Long meadow.

Fishing line in our parks.

 Dear reader:

As the days warm up, its up to us, regardless, to seek or be alert for discarded fishing line and tackle (hooks) that may be within reach, that is a tremendous danger to our wildlife.

Here is one link of its bad effect upon birds and water creatures.

https://www.wildlifecenter.org/fishing-tackle-threats-wildlife

If you see fishing line around in our native habitat in Prospect Park ( or elsewhere)

1) please pick it up and bag it to throw into a trash receptacle.

2) email info@prospectpark.org or other local authority if its inaccessible  . A staff person may get from a boat ,long pole, etc. Especially helpful is a google pinned map of the spot

Thank you

Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis) (1)

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S106792447
- Comments: "Found at 9:57am. The same swamp sparrow wetland habitat it's been seen at. In the phragmites. Across from the wellhouse, the south wrist of the peninsula hand. Very good looks when it appeared. Popped up low and left of the old styrofoam cooler, and walked right, pass the cooler and then hopped near a bright leafy green plant. Most of the good looks was then. When it was still and facing us. You could see the whole thing, sunlight, from beak to tail, through a very tiny opening through the reeds. Dark head and back, phragmites camouflaged front, yellow iris. Then it moved further back into the phraghs for the next 45 minutes. I'd attach a 1 star photo that I took with my phone + binoculars, but it's not worth it, considering all of the photographers around. Very relived to finally see this life bird. I hope everyone else can too."
