Long leisurely view of Cooper's perched above Valley Water today, which may explain why there was an usually still and silent male Kingfisher perched over the water itself. Water was iced over last time I was there, Dec. 23, but all open now. Green-Wood's so close to the harbor, as Kingfishers fly, I suspect they may "migrate" back and forth. Have had a couple of sightings in the bays north of Bush Terminal Park this month.

I'm hoping to join you for Sunday's walk.

Will get date possibilities for bird and tree walk to you soon.

Cheers and happy New Year!

active Winter Prospect spot

With few locations truly active in Prospect winter, it may be a good idea to check out the Compost yard at the Zoo's north fence line.

Eni Falci reported to me some bird activity at the compost Yard. Prime sighting was a GOLDEN CROWNED KINGLET. Along with that uncommon species, a load of WHITE THROATED SPARROWS mingled with AMERICAN ROBINS. Eni also mentioned with the warming spell she was seeing little gnat like flies out so perhaps that is good for the birds. Sweetgum trees live in that area as well, another good reason to visit the Compost yard.

The Lake continue to host a very good number of gulls, again reaching to 3 thousand birds. Joshua Malbin scanned the flock this morning , but nothing extraordinary to report. Nevertheless, chances favor the opportunist and one never knows there will be a good gull... There aren't many winter opportunities to cite in Prospect , just lucky moments.

Nice read about the Saw whet Owl

To commemorate the Northern Saw whet seen on Prospect's Xmas Bird count, here's a nice read.. Thanks to Matthew Wills sending the link to me.

The walk home

A surprise to see on the ballfields along the north snow fence: NORTHERN FLICKER.Three birds picked the ground, these woodpeckers I haven't seen since early fall. They were reported on the Prospect Xmas count, but I missed them. It's a cool winter yet uncommon sighting.

Meanwhile, the WOOD DUCKS continue their residence at Upper Pool. All seven are seen, sticking close to the small island. It's another species we enjoy seeing thru winter as long the water stays open.

Gulls

A mass of gulls congregated on frozen Prospect Lake this early afternoon.

With the gull numbers so high , about 3500 I saw, its tough to pick out anything good. With time constraints of work and no scope, the best I could do is scan quickly with eight power binoculars. Unless a good bird is in the front of the mass, I could just about say fuhgggeeettttaaabooouuuiittt! It requires a decent scope and much patience --time-- to pick out a hidden rare gull.  I was able to count up to nine GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS scattered with the large flock.

But pretty obvious this morning was the NORTHERN SHOVELER. The mass of them from the photo I took numbered pretty high. I estimated in a quick count about 380 birds. That despite only a small portion of the lake open. With warmer temperatures coming , the lake will open up. But ice will not melt that quickly and gulls should present opportunities for study.

First day of Prospect winter

Sweetgums seeds (that finches love eating) on ice near West Island, with autumn fallen leaves; Northern Shovelers all huddled on the ice of frozen Prospect Lake.

Today is Winter Solstice

Winter began at 5:44 this morning. Its a new but cold season!  Full of icy possibilities !

Upper Pool Snow Geese continues

Three SNOW GEESE continues on the Upper Pool back shoreline. Two juveniles along with an adult standing placidly at that spot. IN the foreground, I saw at least 4 WOOD DUCKS  next to the island. At least by my estimate 200 Canada Geese accompanied both species in the crowded pool.

Prospect Lake basically froze over. Despite that, this is a good time to check out the gulls. Many days it will be the usual but on rare occasions there might be an opportunity for a rare one. I scanned briefly with my bins but a scope is better , of that I don't bring to work. There were at least 600 gulls towards the Peninsula side. Unfortunately the bright low sun is a hindrance looking out that way.

Bird conservation is a core American value, whether inspired by the powerful flight of a Bald Eagle or the charisma of a Golden-crowned Kinglet. This value is widely supported by citizens of all political persuasions. Now, we face a critical moment. The environment was not a major issue in the recent election, but decisions made by the incoming Administration and Congress could have far-reaching impacts for birds and their habitats.
That's why we need everyone who cares about birds to join together and sign this petition to protect cornerstone legislation and other top conservation priorities. This may be the single best opportunity ever for our community to stand together for birds. Please show your support for bird conservation and ensure that the progress we have made in recent decades is preserved.
We will present the petition and signatures to the new Administration and Congress on January 23, just after the Inauguration. Please sign to show your support for bird conservation today!

"TOGETHER FOR BIRDS" PETITION

Dear [Administration and Congress],

We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, represent a broad cross-section of the bird conservation community. We aim to build a dialogue with the new Administration and Congress to promote the conservation of birds and their habitats, which are of fundamental value to the American people.

More than 60 million Americans care deeply about birds, and bird-related recreation contributes more than $36 billion to our economy. Birds also act as the "canary in the coal mine" for our environment and provide valuable benefits to society, from pollination to pest control. But birds are in trouble, with many declining in population or facing extinction.

We endorse the following priorities to ensure that birds and their habitats continue to be effectively conserved for the benefit of all Americans. We ask that you please support:

1. THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT: Protect the Act that has helped recover our national bird, the Bald Eagle, and other species in trouble.

2. THE MIGRATORY BIRD TREATY ACT: Safeguard the only law that exists to protect most American birds, and support the federal Duck Stamp, one of the nation's most successful conservation programs.

3. FEDERAL FUNDING FOR BIRDS: Maintain and grow essential sources of federal support for migratory bird conservation.

4. THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY: Ensure that the EPA can continue its vital work to protect people and birds from dangerous pesticides and other toxins.

5. LAND MANAGEMENT FOR BIRDS AND PEOPLE: Ensure that public lands remain public, are properly managed for wildlife, and that recreational access is maintained.

We also acknowledge that many other national and state initiatives are of critical importance to birds, and that citizens and private enterprise can play vital roles in these conservation efforts.

Let's work together for birds!

Good seeing you today!  I finally made it up to the pools and saw four Snow Geese.   Right after Dennis and I left you, the entire gull flocks took to the air, and as we picked thru, we saw and heard this imm Bald Eagle circling for several minutes.

Post Lunch report

Bobbi Manian observed an immature BALD EAGLE over Prospect Lake at about 1:45 pm.

A good day for seeing some species , particularly a few new ones in Prospect Count week.

Displaying thumb_IMG_5900_1024.jpg

One more thing...Three HOODED MERGANSERS re-appeared at the Peninsula meadow cove, two days ago a no show on Count day.A drake with two hens...( Boooo)

Its "Snow"-ing in Prospect

For the fifth consecutive day , SNOW GEESE made its presence felt in Prospect Park. Its a beautiful species, always welcomed in our park.

Today , 4 SNOW GEESE were seen in the Upper Pool. This is the pond south of the Tennis House or more specifically at the northeast corner of the Ball fields. Two juveniles along with the pair of adults swum along with the Canada Geese ;at one time all the Snow geese went ashore on the little island, also harboring 7 WOOD DUCKS.So this little rarely mentioned island is getting lots of attention.

Here's the number count I recalled for the Snow geese of the current time span recorded. Beginning December 15th: one, one, twenty -four on Count Day, three, then four today.I can't recall fluctuating numbers for this species on consecutive days in Prospect. There was a longer time span years ago, but that was a single Snow Goose hanging around Prospect Lake

At the feeders that I had to refill suet cakes,a new count week species I found. A single COMMON GRACKLE prowled the ground below the feeders, its plumage or iridescent sheen very obvious in the sunlight.

Running into Bobbi Manian, possibly another count week bird as I cant remember from Saturday. Bobbi reported flyover FISH CROWS. Daisy Paul happened along and mentioned seeing TREE SPARROW that I forgot to ask the number, another count week bird as well. Also Bobbi said there was an unidentified hawk chasing birds on the Nethermead before I tweeted out the Snow Geese report.
