a brief spell

Gathering reports from birders, it appears it was a decent day given the rosy Birdcast report for Tuesday. Particularly the area at Butterfly Meadow's southwest side gave way to good birds with the exception of the Mourning Warbler.

Highlighting the mornings observation, Ryan Mandlebaum found a MOURNING WARBLER within Arleens Pines , with great photos to view. See the previous post link. Following that , warblers included Blue-winged, Chestnut side ( both i gratefully saw with Kathys help), American Redstart, Black and White and Terry found a Wormeating Warbler.

Also found by Ryan and Foreest was a Yellow-bellied FLycatcher, about the prettiest Empid i think for a fall bird.

Obviously more stuff is out there , but whatever, get  thee out there if you have free time.

I followed it around for a bit, and eventually it let out a few distinct "turee" calls vaguely reminiscent of eastern wood pewee, identifying it as a yellow-bellied flycatcher. While it certainly had the classic low contrast throat, it was not as yellow as some, with only a bit of yellow on the stomach and lower breast, and some yellow intruding into the grayish upper breast with a central stripe. Bounced from the bush next to the water up into a tall tree, and ascended until it was lost. Audio; I believe Radka got photos.

Fwd: Shore birds in PP

Radka saw a small flock of semipalmated and least sandpipers INSIDE on the kiddie splash Lefrak Rink in prospect. They Should've bought their skates! ( A marine creature 😆 )

Semis are grayer overwashed birds with short blunt tipped bills. Least are darker backed, thin pointy billed birds with yellow legs and breast bib. Third photo shows least. 4th photo is excellent comparison of semi and least ( on tight)

Terrific find by Radka in an unusual location.

- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S147414597
- Comments: "Perched on snag on Lookout, slope above Wellhouse drive between containers & picnic area. Medium-sized flycatcher, chunky, heavily-vested. Fluffy white wing patches highly visible as it preened, giving it an almost white-backed appearance. Did its part by catching & eating a spotted lantern fly.

GWC wormeating warbler

Worm-eating Warbler (Helmitheros vermivorum) (1)
- Reported Aug 02, 2023 09:41 by Richard Fleming
- Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=40.6523083,-73.9904281&ll=40.6523083,-73.9904281
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S146286123
- Comments: "Flags Rare, presumably for unseasonable/early. Not an easily confused bird, and seen well; I was initially mostly concerned with eliminating Swainson's Warbler, given the climate change assault of southern species in recent weeks. However the bird was from the first view too warm and ruddy/buffy for Swainson's, and quickly showed me a bold buff coronal stripe on dark-capped head. The bird was loosely associating with a yellow warbler about halfway up a large tree and bolted out before I could get decent photos. I therefore immediately made a voice note: "I just had a warbler interacting with a yellow warbler in a beech tree, I think it is, all warm buff color, paler to the undertail, above browner, darker, with a very prominent buff coronal stripe and two buff stripes over the eyes. Quite bright orange legs. Bird gave an alarm call as it flew out of the tree, a very thin high two note tseee, tseee rather unmusical.""
