Poaching remains a major concern in Jamaica Bay. Last night the National Parks Service issued numerous citiations at the All American Ball fields to poachers who were noted taking large volumes of horseshoe crabs. The harvesting of Horseshoe Crabs in Jamaica Bay is illegal These animals clean the waters of the bay and their numbers have been falling in recent years which is a big concern . They are critical to the food chain as their eggs are a major source of food for the birds who migrate through here on their way north. We will continue to work with the DEC and the parks police to identify illegal poaching in Jamaica Bay
